Love the small creek video, there is nothing I enjoy more than pulling trout out of small creeks. I know you didn't ask this time but here you go, find yourself a medium action 5' rod. Yours is light action, can tell by how those fish bend your rod. A medium action rod works so much better when fishing upstream. The current alone will mess w a light action rod and it makes it really tough to set the hook. Second, stop w all that other lure garbage. In line spinners are the cat's ass. You will learn how to swim those lures through the stream by adjusting speed of retrieving, it will be deadly. The only other lure I would buy, is a Rapala. Rapala F5 and F7, CD5, CD7, Brown trout, purpledescent, rainbow, silver and gold all work v well. Size of lure is in direct relation to stream size.
@FishHawk5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I agree, spinners are the bomb. They're by far my favorite lure for trout. I haven't really messed with the Rapalas but maybe I will give them a shot. Thanks for the suggestion!
@scottseifert40865 жыл бұрын
I haven't used my Rapalas since I started making my own spinners. Still keep them in my vest. It's hard to throw a $7-8 lure when I can throw a $1.00 lure that works as well 99% of the time. Occasionally, not often, but a steelhead will just flat out refuse a spinner, especially if he's hit it once and got off the lure. Then I pull the Rapala out and they will usually slam it right away. Nice talking trout w you, I got the fever. Just waiting on some above freezing weather to go chase some steel, then trout.

Thank you very much for the content you put out. I suffer not catching trout in winter on streams. If you have any experience in this particular circumstance, a video would be much appreciated or some sort of resource. I’m on my 3/4th year winter trout fishing and have not caught anything. I do know there are plenty of trout in the streams I fish, because I eventually end up spooking them as I work up stream. 😬 I catch plenty of trout in the summer, but winter.....I really do horrible. 😊
@FishHawk5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! What state are you fishing? How big are the streams? I would try spinners, trout magnets, small jigs under a float or small flies under a float, small crankbaits. As a last resort you can try powerbait, power eggs, powerbait honey worms. Another important thing is if you're fishing smaller streams, sneak up behind the trout from downstream and cast upstream to them (you may already know that) Usually something with scent will help in the winter. In the winter they're a little less aggressive from my experience. Try slowing down the lure/bait. Hope that helps!
@496845 жыл бұрын
Fish Hawk I live in Traverse City Michigan and fish the platte river in honor, the boardman river in TC, and the Manistee/Ausable river in Grayling the most. I would say these rivers are approximately 20/30’ wide an average of 4’ deep. 😬 I have 25 years experience fishing and 20 years of that is fly fishing. I have no problem catching winter steelhead. I’m getting interested in winter trout fishing as that is most of my down time from work. Steelhead/salmon fishing is getting boring to me. I just started trout fishing maybe 5 years ago and love it, but not biased. I do like fishing other panfish too when I can. 😊 I don’t claim to be an expert either, because I’m always learning and expanding my brain as much as possible. I’ll work on your suggestions for the rest of the winter. Thank you for your valuable and precious time. 😊👊

A good rule of thumb for spinner fishing for trout is gold color blade in sunlight, silver blade for overcast or cloudy days, & black blade at night. Follow this Rule and you will generally become very successful. Also some spinners work best tied directly to the line without a swivel, others with a swivel will get tangled up more in your line, that's a sign that you should tie it directly to the monofilament. All this came for my grandfather who told me this in the 70s and I have used this information since and scored lots of successful fishing trips using this simple information.

Awesome video! Those brown trout have amazing colors. Do you have any tips for getting them to bite in the winter? I fish in NJ, so its probably colder than where you fish and maybe a little different, but I usually have a really hard time even finding trout and getting them to bite. I usually fish in small and tight spaces to try to find them.
@FishHawk5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I love their colors. Usually something moving slow with some scent works well in the winter. They aren't as aggressive in the winter. I always try a spinner first usually. Just to see if they will chase. But if that doesn't work try something slow and something with scent. Powerbait, power eggs, powerbait honey worms. And of course live bait like minnows, night crawlers, wax worms and mealworms. But live bait is my last choice usually. I don't like using it as much as artificial lures.
@samsonk20775 жыл бұрын
Ok, thanks. For wild browns I have to use artificials and barbless hooks in the main stream I fish for them. I’ll try the spinner soon

Have you ever tried " mini -foos" under a float ? 1/32 or 1/64 oz jig head with hair or feathers on it. I catch tons of steelhead and trout on them. Works when other stuff doesn't. I'm sure you probably have. Its popular in northeastern P.a

@StevenBoak5 жыл бұрын
That's what they are called around Erie p.a. . .they are just hair or bucktail jigs, typically black with some bright streaking or metallic flash. Very small. Cabelas has them if you search steelhead jig or bucktail jig
@StevenBoak5 жыл бұрын
Last year in P.a we had trouble getting fish , they would chase spinner or bait but not hit. Tried everything and then thought about using steelhead tricks. Tied them on. Tipped with maggot or waxworm and it was on.
