You might enjoy “The 13th Warrior” where an Arab diplomat to the Northlands in the early days of the Islamic caliphate from Iberia is forced by strange circumstances to join a Viking Jarl in opposition to an unspeakable evil threatening all men.

A Jarl (later known as an “Earl” or “Count”) is a very local type of feudal lord, usually over only a county township, at the largest, up to around 100,000 or less acres in the early days. Some were independent fiefdoms, others were subject to much greater lords of varying ranks.

The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy, so the Fellowship of the Ring is just the first book. The Two Towers is important because it explains many of the people/beings involved. The final book, Return of the King is a worthy summation of everything. Enjoy watching it, Now for what just happened on the show. The vikings were pagans, who followed the Norse gods. Odin, Thor, Freya, Loki, Sif, Baldr etc. When the vikings reached land, they found Christian monasteries. Christianity had become established in most of the brittanic isles in the 2-3 centuries proceeding the Norse invasions. Before that, the Saxons held beliefs similar to the Norse, whilst the other peoples tended to be more druidic. This is just a short simple overview. When the vikings found the monasteries with the golden chalices, candlesticks, and crucifixes, they realized that by targeting such places, they could gather immense wealth very easily. They were also getting a bit of revenge on the Christians who had come to Scandinavia to spread the gospel a few years earlier. While doing so, St. Boniface had his missionaries cut down a sacred tree, which didn't endear him to the Scandinavians. So I hope that gives you a bit more useful info.

The raid on the Lindesfarne monistary was a factual event that is considered to be the begining of the 'Viking age' whe the norse began initially raiding along the English and Scitish coastline befire eventually invading with the 'great heathen Army' when they colonised the Saxon countries of Northumbria, East anglia, and part of Mercia, with modern day York or Efowich as it was known then as thier capital. I would recomend watchin the youtube video of 'how England was formed' for historical context.

for reference to the raids, at the time the first raids was being conducted the vikings where exclusively pagan in that they prayed to odin and so forth. As time pased by the christian culture and religion got more integrated with their culture. And Olaf the holy was one of the leading figures uniting Norway under the Cross thou this was much later than at the timelines of this episode. that is why u may question why they killed the munks at the church. They didnt even know what christianity was at that time and believed it to be pagan themselves since they saw Jesus and God as false Gods
