Lindisfarne where they landed is a small remote island and literally all that was there was the monastery. They took what they found back to prove they had found new lands and to try and persuade the earl to allow further exploration with more men.

They're Vikings. It's brutal , but that's the history of what they did . They raided , killed , stole , and enslaved who they kept alive . I love in the WWII movie "Fury" when Brad Pitt says " Ideals are peaceful , history is violent ". Pitt , means that there is a difference between ideas and reality... But history is violent , despite all the ideals , there hasn't been much peace time throughout history , if any.

plus apparently there were also a fair amount of Christian Vikings in Scandinavia.

Christianity (and other monotheistic religions) and then the reformation and then science and enlightenment thought sought to change the violence of our history, from what had been in the pagan world, such as with the Vikings. It took a long time to do so.

Why kill the priest? To terrorize. You want them running away when you see them. They will tell others and you don't want them telling others that there is nothing to fear from these men. It worked too. To this day english speakers sing hymns asking God to protect them from those that come from the sea.

Stuff like this is why Christians portrayed Vikings as devilish beings. It's where the horned helmets come from, if I'm not mistaking, which is how most people think of Vikings nowadays when they never really wore horned helmets. Also, this raid is extremely accurate to it's real life counterpart.

I agree. They took everything that they could fit in the boat. Raids are hit and run. Far different from an invasion.

Do not forget its a Raid not an invasion or exploratory mission. The goal is to get in acquire slaves or plunder and get out before a resistance could be mounted. Even if you were with a well armed group of warriors I imagine it would be scary to be in a foreign land not knowing where anything is or how powerful the local warriors could be. Also think about the Viking ship they don't want to leave it for long because if an enemy ship were to spot it and destroy they would be trapped.
@felipeavila25143 жыл бұрын
Hi! You see the Vikings in the eighth century were organized by small villages in Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden), land that was not very good for a strong exploitation of agriculture, leading them to maintain family farms as a form of primary social organization, however, the artisans were grouped near tribal chiefs called Jarls. Having few resources to exploit, every year when there was no ice in the ports they went to raid other more prosperous people, at first they turned to the Baltic Sea to raid tribes in the area (Pomeranians, Lithuanians, Slavs, etc.), but in 793 the Vikings set foot on a remote island, Lindisfarne, today part of the UK. They raided, robbed, pillaged, plundered, enslaved and retreated. Let the series absorb you, you will soon understand the motivations of that people, plus you will see that many things that happen in the series happened in real life, for example the use of new navigation techniques. Although never forget that it is a fictional series, so not everything we are told happened in reality, for example Rollo was not Ragnar's brother.
@Morningsux3 жыл бұрын
Well, pretty obvious as for me. That was just 1 boat with a dozen of vikings. They killed all witnesses, took hostage and treasures, so they can come back with the proof there are lands on the west. So that they can return to these England lands with an army later.
@joka6193 жыл бұрын
i dont think ragnar meant to insult lagertha when he said she has to stay here. ragnar owns considerable land, livestock and grain, plus his children are young and he has servants, and no guards. knowing this and the fact that they went to raid without the earl's permission/blessing it is very likely that he could send his men to kill everyone and torct the place and seize his lands. having lagertha stay there meant the perception of everything running there would stay intact. what ragnar doesnt know at this point ofcourse is that they have already been spotted and outed to the earl. if he knew, i dont think he would've risked it knowing how greedy and evil the earl can be.
@kevinnorwood87823 жыл бұрын
This episode is a prime example of how the show is a mix between fantasy and actual history. Where Ragnar and his Vikings land is meant to be Lindisfarne, a small island monastery off the coast of Britain. And if this is meant to be Lindisfarne, then it means that (even though the times and dates kind of get distorted as the series progresses, and certain historical characters appear earlier or later than they should) the year this episode takes place is 793 AD. That year is VERY significant in history because that was the FIRST recorded Viking raid in history, and it is marked as the official start of the Viking Age, an age that would last for around three centuries.

"Why they are killing them?" Cause they are Vikings. lol War, battle, was a way of life to them. And I figure the key about the Vikings was they were using a lot scare tactics. It's propaganda in a way. They wanted to come off as a very scary force. So when they would attack people, they had to make it count so that their reputation of monsters be known.
@ronmaximilian69533 жыл бұрын
This is probably the most historically accurate part of the show. The Norse werepeaceful farmers and good traders, but when they went viking, IE raidng, God help you. Fundamentally, they simply lack to land and one of the ways to establish what self is for young men to go on a raid and take property. My first cousin is married to a native Swede whose ancestor went Viking and used his loot to purchase a farm that has been in the family for over a thousand years. In the middle ages, there wasn't much economic growth. You prospered by taking rather than by growing the pie. Do you imagine that Asparukh when he led his Bulghars into the Danubian plain?

All that gold there is way more than few pieces in most of the world Scandinavia aswell, where theres theres barely any goods land for farm, plus its a show in the real raid of Lindisfarne they probably killed a few monks who were in they way maybe took some a slaves took all the gold and trading goods that they had (Cloth, Oil, food ect...) and left most of them alive so they can come again in a year or two and do it again, one of the the facts that kinda proves is that Lindisfarne was raided again like 3 times after the first raid, Its also the start of the 300 year more or less in the middle ages called the viking age where Vikings or Northmen in general became kinda like superpower in alot of Europe

Not sure about that. The idea that vikings didn't know about England (as portrayed in the series), what was there, what Gods they worshipped, isn't at all historical. They would had been trading for centuries before the raids of the 700's. They would have been aware of monasteries and churches since the 5th century. They would have been aware of the Christian God - especially the Danish.

To go a viking means to raid, kill, and pillage. This is the Viking culture, as it was with many cultures, even as recently as the American Natives. For example, the Apaches had a rite of passage where you weren't considered a man until you had gone on 3 raids, which always looked like a Charles Manson murder scene. As for this scene, this is isn't the worst thing you will see in this show, not by a long shot.

Usually they just raided other vikings, but farmers like Ragnar were constantly under threat from the earls who wanted to tax the land. Raiding was a way for them to pay their tax and keep their land. It is all the same land, the earl will take it from people he doesn't like and give to someone else. But they are really renters. Ragnar sees this as a dead end, so his solution is to look for new lands. The raiding is how he convinces the others to go with him. Ragnar values knowledge over gold, and the monks are a great source of knowledge because they travel on missions and write everything down.

The only law that existed was within your group of people. Anyone a foreigner was fair game pretty much. Add to that a hard reality of life, it basically was you or the other guy, and finally the northmens religion of asatru, which basically said "the only way to valhalla (their heaven) is to die in combat, where eternal partying awaits the brave" So while the nordic society could be extremely organised and equal, at the same time it created extremely dangerous people, when the only way to heaven is through battle...
