This is so shocking to them because at the time, nobody dared to attack a monastery. Not even the worst bandits, because they knew that if they did, they would be wanted in all kingdoms of the land. That is why the monasteries were completely unprotected and unexpecting. So in comes the vikings, those "godless heathens" who do not give a shit and to them, this is just easy pickings. Really brutal.

They all speak different languages, Athelstan the priest Ragnar took spoke the Viking language that's why Ragnar said he's more valuable alive. It's for the show that they use English for all

Don't worry you will see character development in future episodes, especially in season 2, season 2 is one of the best seasons in any show, don't be put off by them killing everyone, season 1 really aims to understand who Ragnar is, his struggle & how merciless vikings can be when raiding but don't worry you get to know the characters better.

Vikings were far better traders than raiders. They traded all over Europe, through Russia, across the African coast, etc... They founded a lot of Russian cities, became the Normans in France and took England and Sicily. They are more than just raiders.

See a lot of people describing how the "Vikings" were more then just raiders. And while that is good it's technically incorrect. The problem is that people have taken a term that is more of a profession and used it to describe a people. The people were Norse and those that went raiding "went a viking". I think this is where the skewed view of the Norse come from. Like if all you associate a people with are bankers, cooks... or terrorists.
@snapgab7 жыл бұрын
You know, of course pillaging and raiding is bad, but it's not like Vikings were the only ones who did it. All those fancy Christian countries do the same shit, they just have fancier names for it, like a crusade or a holy war, or wars about succession/whatever. In the end it's all just an excuse to kill people and take their stuff. Vikings are a bit more honest about what it is, but in the end they're not that different. It's not like all of them are continuously raiding, most of them are farmers or traders, but some of them occasionally join a raid in search of wealth.
@grazareth7 жыл бұрын
snapgab Thanks for pointing that out, it needed to be said!

Eh, not entirely accurate. Vikings raided for gold and slaves, Christian countries went to war for power. Not quite the same thing, but equally bad.

Legends have to come from somewhere. Im sure there WAS a Ragnar or King Arthur, but their stories were blown out of proportion
@JRF321007 жыл бұрын
+Tyr the God of Justice The point though is that there is no possible way that you could ever trace your lineage back to "Ragnar", the same way you can't trace your lineage back to King Arthur. He's a heroic figure in Viking poetry. Historians have found that many of the deeds from the stories attributed to the Ragnar character were actually done by other Viking leaders. Many people named their children Ragnar since he was such a legendary folklore hero, so there certainly were people named Ragnar, but no evidence exists suggesting that THE Ragnar ever existed, and certainly none documenting his lineage. Rollo ,on the other hand certainly existed, and we know his famous lineage. So one could trace their line back to him.
@JRF321007 жыл бұрын
Speaking of Rollo though, they have actually found the remains of some of his famous descendants, so one could even potentially match up to his line with DNA. Actually, he is one of the ancestors of the present-day British royal family, as well as an ancestor of all current European monarchs and a great many claimants to abolished European thrones.

Fun fact. The Anglo-Saxons like the monks referred to them as Northmen (since they came from the North) and not as vikings. The word "viking" is actually a norse word meaning to go raiding, so it is a verb not a noun. Also, monasteries like Lindisfarne were prime targets for the vikings since they had all of the gold and silver but not the defenses, very easy to take. So far I am a little disappointed in this series, because I am so used to your knowledge of the lore in GoT, that it spoiled me and this series would be as entertaining. I really do think you should look up and read about some history of Anglo-Saxon history during this time period. I think it would make the show even more enjoyable for you.
@stonewall017 жыл бұрын
Since Ragnar is mythical than I know that. They don't know what Tonsure's are, They don't know why the monasteries were undefended or why they were targeted, Those things were be understood with just a basic knowledge of the history.
@stonewall017 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I reread my comment and I came off more of an ass than I meant. Sorry about that. Essentially Vikings did something similar to what the show GoT did in regards to the books. For example, Davos had like 5 sons I think but they combined all of them into one character. This show did the same thing. Many things that happened in Vikings did happen in reality but they condensed them into one particular time frame and one or a few particular characters, or had some characters do things someone else did later on. You know what a mean. But a basic overview of the Viking Age, and Anglo-Saxon England, in general would be helpful I think.

B.C. Isn’t half of Europe related to some king or duke or historic figure, I mean just based on how long ago these people lived and how human reproduction works, finding a connection should not be to hard right? Not trying to devalue that for you tho, it’s still pretty cool(my parents are both from different countries in Eastern Europe, I never tested it but I imagine finding a link to Genghis Khan is very likely,since what 50% of people from Eastern Europe and parts of Asia are decedent in some way from him or something like that)

Related to Rollo 31st Great Grandfather, Ecbert 34th Great Grandfather, also Charles the Bald 32nd Great Grandfather and Aella was my 32nd Great Uncle. Ragnar if he was real is my 36th Great Grandfather. At least a couple times for all of them because of all the intermarriage they had back then. Watching Vikings knowing I'm related to these people is fascinating even if it is a dramatic reenactment.

"I don't know if I should like Rollo or not" uuuuuuuuhhhhhh... you will made your minds eventually. And the way I see is that the vikings just expect everyone to be a fighter so that's why they just go rampaging, they don't know that a monastery has no soldiers, etc. Also they don't exactly "pillage for a living", you will see the emphasis they put in farming and trading later, that as far as I know it's more their way of making a living. I mean there is no way you could sustain a kingdom just by pillaging your neighbors.

Ragnar and Rollo were separated by a few decades IRL, so they weren't siblings. It's also unknown if Ragnar was a real person, though many historians think he was, but that he lead a less eventful life than was attributed to him by the Norse sagas and historians of the time. Rollo on the other hand has a direct lineage that can be traced - he was an ancestor of William the Conqueror.

the monks all look the same to rid themselves of "self" and selfish desire. this is largely what happens when two cultures collide who have no frame of reference for understanding the other. while the vikings ways are completely alien to the christians. the monks ways are equally alien. imagine growing up in a warrior society where everyone even the women fight as soldiers and happen upon a pacifist. it would make no sense to you at all. how does one "not fight"??? this show could lie about what the viking raiders were. but the greatest part of this show is their honesty in showing them for how they were not taking our morals into account and letting you come to your own conclusions. further, the norse (viking was an occupation not a type of person), were prolific traders trading as far away as the middle east. in fact, things like womens equality and western form of government owes a great deal of its existence to norse culture. this is a great show, i hope you guys continue watching it. but one recommendation i would give you is check our sense of morality at the door and just take in what you are seeing for what it is. a mixed bag of good/bad based on a societal ideal that is simply different from our own. and yes, rolo is kind of the stereotypical viking ideal where ragnar is more calculated and has an endgame in mind. good show guys.

Aaron's right, I think the first account of a "viking" raid in Northumbria had the locals stand on the coast in curiosity rather than fear, then be massacred. Simply because they hadnt encountered viking raids yet. Though it could be myth/propaganda against the vikings, since it's not like they invented raiding and I doubt coastal peoples would see a ship coming full of warriors and stand around like dumb livestock.

The hair cuts of the monks is a tonsure. If you were a monk, you were legally required to shave the top of your head; if you weren't, and you wore that hair cut, it was considered a kind of fraud. In those days, people of certain classes marked their place in society by clothing and hair cuts. It was illegal to cut your hair or wear the clothes of someone from another class. It was like everyone had a legally enforced uniform for their profession. 90% or more people were born into their class, the only common exception were the religious class, which were made up mostly of devout middle- or upper-class people and younger sons of nobles who had little to no inheritance.
@JRF321007 жыл бұрын
LOL Shane, Ragnar is just a heroic character from viking poetry and sagas. Historians doubt that such a man existed, and much of what was attributed to him in the poems is known to have been done by other real people. The viking leaders who called themselves sons of Ragnar were real historical figures, but Ragnar was just a famous name because of the stories, so claiming to be his son gave you more of a bad ass image. Rollo, on the other hand, is a real historical figure. He had nothing to do with anyone named Ragnar. He invaded northern France and established the Norman Empire, and right after they assimilated into the local culture and converted to Christianity. Years later, Rollo's great-great-great-grandson WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR went to England, kicked it's ass, and became the first norman King of England.
