I haven’t drove since I was 16 years old sophomore year in high school. Took my restricted license test and passed with flying colors except the vision test. I need to see 20/40 to pass but unable to, as I saw 20/50. I am 27 now and have a better lens proscription and now have the opportunity to drive again. So excited. What a inspirational video. This is so encouraging! I lost most of my peripheral vision 3 years ago at age 54, and was told by my eye doc "you probably shouldn't be driving". No suggestions for what to do, where to go for training, help, etc. I still drive once in a while, but only if my husband is with me, only at day, in familiar areas, no rain, etc. If I don't feel safe, I don't drive. I want to find a resource for training and evaluation, but can't find any help in my state of South Carolina. It doesn't seem fair that my driving rights depend solely on a pass/fail vision test at this moment (our state didn't even do vision tests the last time my license was renewed, so I do still have my license). My visual acuity is very good with glasses, it's just the peripheral that is a problem. I've always been a very safe driver, and feel even with my vision loss, I drive more safely and cautiously than so many others on the road.

What is your visual acuity, if you dont mind me asking? I have 20/50 and 20/70 and blind spots in my pherphrials. Teo doctors told me "no, that Id have a delayed reaction time" and the other a low vision doctor told me shed hate to live on my street (this was when I was 20). Two others said yes. Im 32 and interested in driving but Im terrified to go back to my eye doc because hes clearly not gonna give me a chance. It makes no sense to me. I have either 60 or 75% visual field in the left and 25 or 30% in the right. The visual test is so outdated because people dont just look straight ahead the whole time they drive. They move their head around. Anyway I live in NC and have no idea what to do. Ive been so isolated and unable to work anywhere.

I would get another opinion. If I were you. Every state has different laws. My central vision is fine but I don’t have peripheral vision. My low vision specialist, retinal specialist, and optometrist all say I am good to drive in the daytime but not at night

In Arizona you need a 20/40 vision in one eye without prescription glasses or contacts. If you can’t meet that requirement then you are given a restricted license. I have 20/75 or 20/50 vision and the test they gave me I couldn’t see a single thing so I couldn’t get my license lol. It sucks so much because I really want to drive.

Smart Drive Test yes I do, I had 20/20 vision when I was a kid and slowly lost. Partial vision. It’s been 14 years since I was diagnosed as bisually impaired and was looking into AI for assistive technology in driving or my life in general but it’s tough. And thanks.

Hi King Ratchet - Thank you for your question. Do you not meet the requirements? My only suggestion would be to talk to a manager at the DOT to see if you could challenge the policy. Also, find out whether it's a law, a policy, or a recommendation. If it's not a law than they don't have any backing. Being legally blind since birth I have never had a license myself, but grew up with low power motorcycles (125 range off road) then later mopeds before they required a license on the roads. I don't think I'd ever want a car license, but I'd REALLY love to be on 2 or even 3 wheels again like an ape50 or something. Now you can't even have gas powered bicycles without a license, and electrics just don't have the range I need.

What state are you in? In Illinois it is 20/40 to drive at night and 20/80 to drive during the day.

OMG Rick So I went to take my Road Test today at Michigan driving School, and I was in the car and adjusting the mirrors and the RearView mirror Fell off the window. I didn’t feel safe taking the test so I rescheduled, Should I Take it again with them or try some where Else???

I don’t know if anyone still watches this but I have 20/50-20/60 eyesight in both eyes. At the DMV I’ve failed the vision test multiple times but the eye doctor said I should be able to drive. Soon I will go back to the DMV with a doctors form and see what they say. I pray for the best and for all of you!

Yes, if your vision is currently 20/125, you are better than 20/200. 20/200 is the big "E" on the top of the eye chart. 20/100 is the third line on the eye chart. Is 20/125 with corrective lenses?
