About time! I have been quite critical of their old Caseta dimmer switches here and elsewhere as being too cheap and not at all well designed. Also wondered what was holding them back from integrating the smart technology into the Diva design that has been around forever to begin with - maybe they wanted to have a "disruptive design" but I feel if it ain't broken, don't fix it.. If they had introduced the Smart switch in the Diva form factor sooner, I would have invested in those and NOT have as many Kasa light switches in the house. And even now, I would hesitate switching over since the value of the Kasa switches is much better than the Lutron. Will be interesting to see how well these new switches are adopted with so much competition already in the smart switches space. BTW, are these (or going to be) Matter compatible?

With all of these awesome improvements, I think that the only thing that I’m left wishing for is to have Lutron-or any of the other major smart-home brands-offer a smart dimmer switch with a built-in motion sensor? Basically, if some brand were to make something similar to the Lutron Maestro Occupancy/Vacancy Dimmer Switch-but with built-in ZigBee or Z-Wave support-I think that could be just about perfect.

You can pair a Lutron Maestro Occupancy/Vacancy Dimmer Switch with a Lutron Caseta switch in a 2 way configuration to get part of this functionality (not particularly cost effective agreed). The Occupancy sensor status can be seen from the Lutron App and the state can be changed but you don't have app control of the sensor parameters or the dimming level and you can't within the Lutron ecosystem trigger events from it (from other integrations you may be able to).

@@JasonBrown527 I have to disagree, there are a lot of very good smart switches out there if all you are grading it by is functionality of controlling lights. When comparing good switches to good switches what benefit is Lutron offering? Brand name and cosmetics? That's not worth $70 to me.
@JasonBrown5272 жыл бұрын
@@LifeWithMatthew Those cheap $20-30 dimmers typically use wi-fi to communicate. Not a big deal when you only have a few. But Caseta, which is Lutron's smallest system, supports up to 75 devices. Wi-Fi based switches would significantly slow down most networks if you had even 20 or 30 devices. ClearConnect operates at 434 MHz which does not interfere with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth or Zigbee, which are all sharing the same RF space. And Lutron has been making dimmers longer than anyone. They actually patented it in 1959. They have tried and tested more light bulbs for compatibility than any other manufacturer. Chances are that if you buy a dimmable bulb that lists any known compatibility the list of verified dimmers will be 70% Lutron devices. So if you want to buy something and know that it will actually work, but a Lutron. If you want to save a few bucks and roll the dice, have at it. Either way, $70 for this dimmer is NOT "ludicrous".

Fantastic addition to the Caseta line-up. I love my RA2 Select + Caseta integrated home. I might be the minority but the fact that it can work with existing or complementary 3-way switches, operates on an FCC licensed band for reliable communication that just plain works, $70 seems like a very reasonable price. You get what you pay for IMHO. Go ahead and roll the dice on other switches that will work "most" of the time.

I'm a bit biased but I would say it's not the best smart switch you can buy and $70 seems a bit pricy. I think I'd prefer something that was $50, could be used as either a dimmer or on/off, has an RGBW light strip with notifications, and also gives you scene control with tap commands. 😉😉

.... Inovelli also has the ability to integrate seamlessly with smart BULBS. For those who don't know, Inovelli offers a setting on their smart switches where the power never gets cut, and the switch sends software commands to control the bulbs or (literally anything else in the smart home, for that matter). It's the best of both worlds: smart switch, smart bulb. No limitations. I have Inovelli's control Phillips Hue in my house and it's... chefs kiss. Lutron is great even you just want basic control of brightness, but I'm a huge fan of Inovelli if you want anything more than that (e.g. color and scene control). Very nice video. I am going to try one of these in my rental and see how it holds up. In the past renters would give a good hard fist to the paddle dimmers I had. Eventually they would crack or stop working. Very frustrating. But why not update if they can withstand the punishment.
@GTechno132 жыл бұрын
Do they allow you to have a logarithmic dimming curve for LED lights? Can you change the ramp rates? These are both HUGE issues for me. With my LED lights, they reach 90% apparent brightness at probably 25% in the dimming range. Only solution is to set a lower maximum which seems a bad solution. They also ramp down too slow because of this so you have to stare at the lights for a second to know if you actually hit the off button since the layout and squishiness are awful.
@devocracy10892 жыл бұрын
This may be a stupid question but is your dimmer currently rated for LED's or is it one made for Incandescents? I only ask because the issue you're describing I've seen in the past be a result of LED's not on a universal-style dimmer so it doesn't ramp appropriately. If yours is already universal I hope you find one that fixes your issue!

I don't think they are worth the price for my situation. The squishy feel isn't the issue though. More just the price to functionality, even though they are reliable. I do really like the actual physical dimmer control and that it will go to that set level when the light switch is turned on, while still retaining the ability to remotely control brightness from the app or another switch. The physical control lets you see where the level is set to and makes it more intuitive for guests (or the wife) to use.

$70 is just too expensive for a single dimmer switch. I have quite a few Kasa dimmer switches that work flawlessly. Yes, they're wifi but I spent a lot of time making sure I have a solid mesh wifi network. Is there a longer delay in automations? Yes, but when I can get them for under $15 each, I'll accept the extra 50-100ms. In Homekit via HomeAssistant.
@BallsworthBallsbury2 жыл бұрын
Extra 50-100ms of latency.... compared to what? Are you saying WiFi is 50-100ms higher latency than other wireless protocols like zigbee, zwave, etc... If so, you're wrong.
@holmesphillip2 жыл бұрын
@@BallsworthBallsbury not saying that at all. I’m saying with a scene that contains Lutron and Kasa switches, the Lutron switches turn on faster but not by much(under a quarter of a second). I was taking about perceived delay, not communication protocol latency.

My perfect smart switch would a something that looks exactly like a normal light switch, but it has a motor so when you turn it on or off remotely, it physically moves the switch. Same for the perfect dimmer switch. I have found that when elderly people use our smart switches they get so confused because it doesn’t flip positions like a regular switch.

I always laugh at the 'suishy' button comments when it comes to these smart switched. Since I've installed mine a year ago, I use the voice command over 95% of the time when turning these lights on and off or dimming to whatever percentage I want. I don't even notice the lack of loud 'click' when I do press the switch the other 5% of the time, so to me, it really is a non-ssue. Can't wait to try these out!

The tricky thing I found with Lutron is that I invested into them specifically because they claim to not need a neutral switch. However, it's only a FEW of their models that don't. I found this out when emailed customer service. If the model has an N in the name, it needs a neutral apparently. After learning this, I realized it's rare to find a model of their switches that isn't neutral based. If you are lucky enough to find one, it's usually sold out, or double the price of a neutral switch. Really unfortunate. I hope this new model helps with the non neutral switch inventory.

Lutron Caseta switches still can't control other lutron devices like the Smart Plug and Outdoor Plug, so you're still have mount an extra Pico remote. So I can't walk into a room, hit a single hardwired switch and turn on overhead lights with a Caseta dimmer and also turn on bedside lamps with a Smart Switch. Still have to use that extra wall mounted Pico. Same thing in any room where you want multiple light sources turned on without having to wall mount an extra Pico.

@BallsworthBallsbury2 жыл бұрын
"Needing" an app to turn the lights off is a completely fabricated "problem" if you're talking about Caseta, and just about any other modern smart lighting solution. You CAN use an app to control the lights. But you don't HAVE to use the app.

For me it’s mostly about the look. I have ELVs in most of my locations, because that’s how PICO remotes look. Having to another casetta look unfortunately would not work for me. I really wish lutron would extend devices to 100 fro 75, as I have two hubs as a work around right now.

2 points: The first is that the physical 3way is important as some local codes DONT ALLOW (pico) non wired remotes (won't pass inspection/ 3 pole most be hard wired) The second is that they need to come out with ELV and MLV ASAP. hate having to spec different styles of dimmers in complex lighting situations
@JLLG22 жыл бұрын
I did not understand the three-way not working reference on the previous models. One could make the argument The Pico remote solution is more flexible because you could turn about any circuit into a three-way or multi-location dimming solution. This new solution requires two $70 switches and three-way wiring, apparently. Pico remotes are cheaper than $70 along with the blank plate and you don't even need a box in the wall for the remote to make it look like a light switch. They just need that little middle button on the primary casita dimmer switch. Just like the Pico remote, that's what I want 🙂

Please take a look at FEEIT electric's dimmer switches. They're available at costco and when on discount, its $20 for 2. THEY ARE AMAZING!!! I put them throughout my house and they have all the essential features, including minimum light level adjustment for non dimmable LED lights. The cons: They are wifi only, need a neutral, the app sucks (although it works great within google home or with alexa), the dimmer switches only work as "lights" in the google home app. I have a fan that I attatched them to and every time I say "hey google, turn the lights on", the fan turns on too. Not sure how they work with alexa

What I want, and unfortunately it seems that I will have to make myself, is a 3-way (or even 4-way) dimmer switch that allows seamless dimming from all physical dimmer switches. Not requiring the use of an app. In other words: at one end of a room I can change the light level and at any other dimmer switch I can also change the light level without sudden changes. I've gotten stuck on the idea of hiding this interface behind an old fashioned looking rotary dimmer knob switch. Instead of directing controlling the power directly each dimmer sends "up" or "down" pulses to the dimmer controller which does the actual dimming. This would work well with most of the aftermarket 0-10V LED power supply "ballasts". The dimmer knob would not have a stop so it would spin freely. On / off would be achieved by pressing the knob. This type of rotary encoder switch with an additional linear "push knob" switch actuation is fairly common since iPods and this switch was easy to find on Amazon. If I had time: I would slap a few of these together with I'm guessing an arduino controller to translate between the switches and the ballast. It really doesn't need even that much cpu power but it would be easier to prototype. Note: the push button actuation could also be used in a long press mode to allow for temporary control of color temperature adjustment. I'm imagining a light fixture with warm white and cool white LEDs. Without an app you could: turn on the the light, dim it, then long press to change the color temperature. After a few seconds the dimmer defaults back from color to intensity. Alas, no one makes this yet.
