Blaming The Minions For The Shrek 5 Delay Is Ridiculous

This week we got the news that the latest instalment to the Shrek franchise, Shrek 5, was set to be delayed half a year for a Christmas release. This coincided with moving the newest Minions movie, Minions 3, up to the Independence Day slot. You would think that semantics like these wouldn’t really bother people. I mean it’s a business decision at the end of the day and you would think that the people that stand to gain the most money would know what they were doing. Well you’d be wrong, as the internet loves to get insanely angry about the most random things and this seems like it’s new target. More specifically, minions. How dare these yellow beans capable of mass destruction and cheap gags push away the refinement of a farting ogre. Oh the humanity! So here’s me joining the debate and outlining why this is actually a very good thing for our beloved ogre. Enjoy.

No Toy Story 5 will still do very well, likely because it’ll be, for the most part, what people actually *want* to see from the franchise, not the instant box office poison that is Disney sci-fi and with a very confusing connection to the main series attached to it at that. I think the *real* Minions 2/Lightyear situation will be Shrek 5 vs. Ice Age 6. And spoilers - Shrek wins, because Ice Age lol 😂

@@bullmonty764honestly, I’m glad Shrek 5 is going to beat Ice Age 6, because we don’t need another Ice Age film, and Collision Course and and Buck’s movie left a bad stain on the franchise, and 6 isn’t even going to be made by Blue Sky Studio. Yes I know Blue Sky closed down in 2021, but it’s so upsetting seeing Disney create films of Blue Sky main IP franchise without them (and I’m nervous they might and eventually end up ruining Rio).

*Yes,* it is ridiculous to blame Minions, especially since I’ve always felt that Illumination actually benefitted Shrek by putting Minions in its slot - making a sequel 16 years in the making is not as easy as it seems, especially when it involves it involves the literal King of Memes himself. There’s also the fact that instead of destroying our fun, Illumination actually made 2026 an even *more* exciting/profitable year for animation at a time when the industry desperately needs huge profits across the board. So they benefitted that too. Besides, I doubt this is gonna turn into another Beyond the Spider-Verse situation; that is a rare unicorn for animated movies and I’m certain DreamWorks knows that they shouldn’t be pulling that BS with the IP that saved them from 2D-induced financial ruin

I first heard this news from YTer, Vailskibum, and all I could do was laugh. 😂 I agree with your points and see why Shrek 5 going up against Toy Story 5, while a potentially HUGE VS. fandom event, might be a risk for Dreamworks & Universal. Also, you could be right about Minions 3 being further along in production.

I don't know why Shrek Forever After gets the hate that it does. I really REALLY liked that one. Shrek 2 is my favorite, but Shrek 4 might have actually narrowly beaten out the original for me. I think people need to give it another chance. Seriously, give it another go. Fiona being the star of the show while holding a mystery behind her motives, was great! I loved her, the ogres, the message of the story, I EVEN liked Rumpelstiltskin (I know he gets a lot of hate too, but he made me laugh). Folks, give it s re-watch! ...that's all I'm saying. 😊

Although I think Shrek 2 is the best of the franchise, I think Shrek Forever After is also a great movie and on par with Shrek 1. It was pretty dark, emotional, and engaging with a great villain in Rumpelstiltskin. Anyway, I agree with you said about the financial risk of competing with Toy Story and I am fine with them delaying it a few months. They have brought back Conrad Vernon, one of the co-directors of Shrek 2 so maybe it could be a return to quality but I don't know. It could be a Despicable Me 4 situation where they brought back the OG director but still couldn't make it more than a serviceable film.

Well... Shrek 5 getting delayed might be a good thing because that would let DreamWorks make a good Shrek sequel that would probably be better than 3 and 4, but at the same time... WHY, UNIVERSAL, WHY?! You love those yellow raspberry-blowing, cutesy fartsy Minions so dang much that we are getting yet ANOTHER movie with the Minions although Despicable Me 4 was just released last year. And I didn't even like Despicable Me 4 at all. No, I'm not joking.

@MarcoAnaya-ks7bp I can think of two reasons why Universal would make another "Minions" movie: 1. Illumination is Universal's more profitable studio and the Minions, its most iconic characters. 2. The Minions are the ideal character for merchandising. "Young Justice" and "Green Lantern: The Animated Series" were shows that were well received for their narratives but got canceled because the toys weren't selling well. Maybe the Minions have the opposite effect.

The thing is...Despicable me/Minions is the type of film franchise that compared to other films (Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks for ex.) doesn't take as much time to make as other films (it at least takes 3 years to make a film) Conrad coming back to direct sounds great but...him being a director of the painfully bland Addams Family films doesn't make me as confident but either way fingers crossed it's good 🤞
