Quick note! Forgot to mention in the video that I changed the name of the 'color' attribute for the smears to 'smear_col', I didn't realize that if you name an attribute 'color', there is a clash of some sort in cycles that causes it to go black. Heya! Just downloaded the addon but I've been having an issue. Any mesh that i add auto smear to just fully disappears and can't be seen in any viewport until I remove the modifier. Tested it in multiple different blend files and it seems to be consistent. Is the add on simply not compatible yet with 4.0? However it seems more resonable that I am doing something wrong

Hey, this sounds like it could be a miss-match in blender version, did you download the 4.1 or 4.0 version of the addon? Either way I would recommend using blender 4.1 because 4.0 has some REALLY bad stability issues and a bug where the exact thing you are describing happens if you undo at all. Really quick question. Is there a way to disable the shadow that the smears cast onto another object? Would be a nice feature to have

Hey, if you are using the full smears then you could for sure do it, in Cycles just select the smear object then go to object > visibility > ray visibility and uncheck shadow. If you're in Eevee then you can turn the shadow off in the material settings. If you are using the straight smears it would be a bit harder but I'll figure something out to include in the next update.

Hey! I actually made an unlisted video explaining how to do this for someone else so here's the link for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4e8gmZsq5ajo5o. If you want to know how to bake it before exporting, just select the smear object and go to the simulation tab and hit bake. Sadly I believe that this only works for the paid version, but I am working on a way to export the free version and once I do that I'll release another update.

Awesome addon! Bought it in a heartbeat! Just wondering is there any way to bake the smears? They are bugging out when the mesh is imported in Godot.

You can bake it in blender in the properties tab under physics, with the object selected you should see a simulation nodes drop down where you can bake it. I believe that the only way to export animated geometry nodes trees like this is to export using alembics, but godot does not support that file type. I found this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYLRgZeCqrGLrdE ) explaining a work around, so what I would do is bake your animation > export as an alembic > import into new file> follow the steps of the video. It is a little tedious, but it should work! let me know if you need anything else.

Is this addon not currently fully compatible with Blender 4.0? It seems to work for the most part, but if at any point after adding the Full Smear I hit undo for anything, the entire smear effect disappears completely. I rolled back to 3.6 and noticed the issue didn't occur there.

I am working on an update right now and that issue will be fixed. I think it will be out within a couple days but I won't have time to make a video before I leave town so if you would like I could tell you when it's up. This update will also have some performance increases and better smear and duplicate controls.

You just have to type the name (capitalization matters) of the vertex group from the object you are smearing, the geometry nodes group will inherit the properties.

Hi, sorry that you are running into this issue, I have also found it but I don't believe there is a proper fix because it is a bug in blender itself. The way that I have found to make them show up in the render is to turn motion blur on and make the value really low. Let me know if this helps!

ay bro this addon is amazing, but i have to ask - how would i export the smear along with the mesh? i have a mesh and NLA file, but there is no smear. this is on the free version btw (no intention of using multiples)

I believe right now the only good way of exporting things like this with goemetry nodes is by using alembics, thought there could be other methods. What I would do if you need a certain file format is export it as an alembic, re import it into blender, and export it again in whatever file type you need. Its a bit of hassle but most file types just wont read geometry nodes as of now.

Hello, the video looks fantastic and is the addon I was hoping for. I am testing it for free on Gumroad. However, if you select Add Straight Smear, the character mesh disappears. I tested it with a box, but it also disappeared. I created the box, created the animation, and selected Add Mesh -> Add Straight Smear. Did I miss anything? I hope there is a solution.

@@SodasDog This for sure sounds like a version mismatch. I've had people come to me with the addon crashing blender when adding the full smear and it is because they are using an outdated blender version. I would recommend using blender version 4.1 which comes with a lot of stability fixes and new features for geometry nodes.

Don't worry I'm not too strict, I would appreciate attribution on paid projects but as far as I am aware under the license I am using (GPL) it is not required unless you are redistributing the code directly. But overall, don't stress to hard about it and always lean on the side of attributing people just to be safe! Also I'm sure you'll make money off of blender if you keep going, I expected to make nothing off of this but it has been surprisingly successful, just keep going and you'll get there!

sorry one more question, i did end up getting it but something is seemingly wrong with the addon, i don't know if its just something blender is doing(maybe because i use blender on steam) or what but i cant add smears to anything, theres no option, in the included blend file i can apply the geometry nodes manually to an object but no matter what i tweak with the settings it just makes the object invisible @@3DDan_

@@enbee7515 Are you sure that you are on the correct version of blender and installed it correctly? If you didn't you have to go to edit>preferences>add-ons>install and find the zip. If you've already done that I am not sure what the issue could be, I can install the steam version of blender if you want and try to troubleshoot it for you.

The vertex groups work the same on both the free and paid versions, they are just in slightly different places. Sorry if that wasn't clear in the video! I've tested the materials in all the versions of blender 4.0+ and they worked for me so could you please elaborate on the issue you are facing? I apologize for the inconvenience.

I had the same issue and I don't know why this worked for me but going into the geo-nodes tree and changing the "Material Index" of the second Smear Materials node group to "3" fixed the issue for me.

Sadly no, the entire system is built on a feature that was implemented in blender 3.6 so it will only have support for version from then on.

Hello, sorry you are experiencing this, my best guess is that it is because of blender 4.0. 4.0 has some really bad geometry nodes bugs that make simulation nodes (which is what the addon uses) basically unusable. I would recommend updating to 4.1 and if that doesn't work let me know and I'll try to help you out.
