3 years later, this video is gonna be a big help to me. Just picked up an 05 FXT and it has the stock oil pan so I'm gonna boroscope when I drain the oil to see if it has the KillerB pickup already. If not, ill be doing this job. I've had a 17 WRX for 2 years but after seeing your content for awhile, I wanted an EJ for the better Subaru experience :)
@jamesburfitt82194 жыл бұрын
Just done this job on my car. Quite a hateful job but very doable for the home car mechanic... I actually found getting the heat shields off was so labour intense that I decided to just leave exhaust on.. A few tough bits were of course getting the sump off but I used a series of stacked plastic scrapers gradually building up until it popped off. Also the dip stick tube is a stubborn thing considering its only two o-rings once the top bolt is out.. be aware it's dam frustrating threading a wet with sealant sump back into place whilst maintaining the integrity of the sealant.. lastly the engine will move forwards so when you lower it back to the mounts it will likely miss the holes.. I let the mounts just sit on the edge of hole then with block of wood pushed on the lower exhaust cross pipe.. eventually it fell into holes.. happy days(Phew)..... enjoy
@Smeedia4 жыл бұрын
Glad that you were able to get it done. Its definitely one of the installs that is more frustrating, but like you said very doable. I had just sheer panic when re installing the new one trying not to let the sealant start to cure before it was fully in place.
@jamesburfitt82194 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia likewise.. the panic that sets in once you apply the sealant is quite immense..lol.... I used Threebond 1215 which didn't seem urgent to set but still stuck to everything I didn't want it to, im gonna leave it 24hrs to fully cure to be sure ... great video by the way, gave me the confidence to do it as I could see what was required. Nice work Smeedia

@@jamesburfitt8219 appreciate the feedback! One of my goals was to try and document ad much as I can to help others do some of these installs. Glad it went well! One issue I had after I installed the pan was the sip stick tube. I was able to get the oil pan put without pulling the header. But there is no way to get it back in cleanly without risking the RTV gasket smudging and setting off cure time. So header had to come out. I had to drop my sway bar to get to the motor mount nut since my whiteline bar is larger and shaped differently, easy to do.

I noticed you had to remove the oem pickup so the pan would come out, but you installed the KB pickup before the pan. Does the KB pan slide in easily with the pickup installed? I'm considering swapping my xt pan but worried about having the room to do it and get the pan in before oil leaks back onto the edges. 😆 I remove honda oil pans pretty much every week for one reason or another and oil never stops seeping onto the cleaned edge, it's almost magic trick to clean it off and slap the pan on fast enough.

Swapping out the oil pick up and because I already had the pan off it was a good idea to put a bigger pan on the car so I don't have to do it later.

Oh God too much sealer, pull that pan off. If you see any sealer oozing on the inside you just might have a problem. This will clog oil passageways and destroy your motor.
@Smeedia5 жыл бұрын
The seal was aimed on the far side of the holes forcing the majority of squeeze out to go outwards. I don't think I'll have any issues with it. But if my motor explodes I'm not opposed 🤣

The Fumoto Drain Valve, I ended up needing a different plug for the pan because my original one stuck out to far. So you need a flush plug for the M20 fitting.

Do you have to unbolt the two 14mm nuts holding the trans mount to the crossmember? I seems like that would stop the trans from moving upward when jacking it up.

Dude, I'm about to lose my shiz. Those 4 bolts in the back of the pan, even lifted. I could get the old ones off easy enough, but.. How in the magical land of the gnomes did you get those new allen bolts on? What magical set of sockets/extensions/weebleydudes do you need to squeeze that up in there? I spent a good 2 hours trying to no avail. I got 10 on, but those 4 are the bane of my nightmares right now. Please, any advice for what you used to get them up there would be greatly helpful right now.. Thanks!
@Smeedia4 жыл бұрын
I taped the bolts to the socket so they wouldent fall off when getting them up there, they are an absolute nightmare to get on. You can try jacking up the engine more if you wanted as well
@fritziepup4 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia Is there a maximum height you can raise it from the Trans? I can get it about 1.5", to where the bottom of the front mounts is out, but if I try to go more it feels very resistant, like there's something holding it. I've undone the DP to Catback, Intake, and all lines to/from the AoS. Should it still feel smooth, or will it get more resistant as you go up? I very much don't want to break anything, though I don't see it getting caught on anything.
@Smeedia4 жыл бұрын
You can do the pitch stop to get a little extra room, but you'd have to unbolt other stuff. When it came to the back 4 bolts I used some of thr OEM bolts instead of the provided hardware and found it to be a little easier
@fritziepup4 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia You see.. This is exactly what I am thinking I'm going to do as well.. I can't get the allen socket in there without it 'lodging' against the side of the oil pan. I can get it slightly torqued, but then I can't get the socket removed. -.- I am probably going to use the OEM bolts for back there as well. Was curious to know if you ended up just doing that too. :)
