We need to fix my Mid paint job on my 1993 Mazda RX7. This car is the first Car I have ever painted and it is not without its defects. So we are going to wet sand, correct, polish, and ceramic coat the entire car to give it a butter-smooth finish!

When I paint, I dust the edges and corners or shapes first, then I dust the whole panel and that's first coat. Quick but steady 12-14in per sec Second coat is coverage coat, this is where you can get a bit slower and get a solid spray. 8-12 in per sec Third coat is the steady coat. This is where you try for smoothness. Always Top to Bottom.
@Smeedia
@Smeedia Ай бұрын
I kinda did this, in each coat I’d start in the edges then the main panel. But I think I need to go heavier on edges than I actually did 🧐

Car looks good! loving how the series has come along. Big sad about the flat 6. Anyways in regards to wet sanding and paint correcting. megs 110 is a sandpaper in itself, its like the sledgehammer of compounds for dep scratches if you didn't want to sand or very hard, usually German, clearcoat. So after you've already sanded, use literally anything else. Adams, griots, their stuff is fine. I prefer Sonax products but that's just time spent with them. For polish, really anything. There's so many what ifs here for paint correction from the pads, to the clear hardness, speed, all that jazz. Pads are so different, they heat different, they obviously cut different, and their cut with some compounds just don't do well. Its a fresh painted car, so its fine. It's such a monster time commitment to try all these things for you certain application so typically im just trying to help ya with broad strokes. Also if you just wait until the paint is a little tacky and put a piece of tape on a run and pull the tape off it will fix it. For wet sanding you did a lot of excess work. 800 is hyper aggressive. 1.5-2.5ish-3 or even 2 to 3 is more often than not perfectly fine. Orange peel isn't that deep. If you've any desire to try again just paint a junkyard hood black so you can see your work. I realize the time investment of wet sanding is insane, as you very well know now lol, and with it being a white car. So maybe try some quick test spots with finer grit to see what works for you, I'm confident you could have skipped a whole pass of the car starting higher, but I wasn't there to actually see it so you may have been in the right. Love the content again. Tremendous respect for doing it yourself, and trying (major) things you've never done before :D

Good news, haven’t talked about it too much. The EG33 is going back in. I miss it 😢😂 Going to try that tape thing next time. Have two more cars we need to paint 😅 both blu and the 2.5RS. So when it comes to wet sanding again I’ll def keep that in mind. Got is green shotted for note 🎉

I wanted to say something when I originally saw this but didn’t want to take away from all your progress and hard work. If I heard you correctly on a past video, you said you sanded up to 800 I think I even heard you say 1000 grit before base. In my experience, that is way too fine for paint to stick. Metallics are typically 6-800 grit but solid colors like what you have, most people including myself prefer 400-600. When I was a teenager I had my car prepped with 1000g when painted and it started flaking really bad. Doing a great job dude. You will get better every time you paint

Small tip when clearing and you get runs, you can cut it down while it's still soft, by using masking tape really lightly! Just gently lay the tape on the runs it'll flatten down a bit, and keep you from having to cut aggressively. Overall, I'd say you did an amazing job!

When sanding a buffing out paint, I always use the 3m "perfect-it" rubbing compound with a wool pad, followed by the machine polish with black foam pad. Final pass with the ultrafine machine polish and a blue foam pad. Cheers!

I just did my first ever paint job on my fd and know the pain of wet sanding.. I found the 3d products worked extremely well for the cut and polish.

Your RX7 probably had a single stage paint job from factory. With single stage touch ups are easy throughout the cars life, but it needs wax to protect it. Way more forgiving to sand back. And go thick and delicious on edges and don't sand them.

+1 on painting. I'm impatient. I tried painting my fairings for my motorcycle for the track and the last piece I did was definitely the best piece. I kind of wish I could do it again like you but you learn! Looks great!

Paint runs try the mirka shark blade or Festool de nibber for future. I only found out about these recently and works for touch up high spots also. Razor also works I hear like you did though. Car looks nice, (painting is hard I have only ever done, tiny areas badly). Better next car, don’t worry about runs and get them out after. + cheap paint gauge for idea of mils or microns.

I think as a beginner a 4th coat of clear would be better. Also as a beginner 800 was probably too coarse to start sanding. Outstanding job though. It looks great and you can say you did it all yourself.

@Smeedia Hay man, you should make it a goal to spend more time driving that thing than you did working on it in the first year. Car looks good enough that I'm looking at the lack of lug nuts. I'm sure if you painted a car again you could do it even faster with results that are twice as good.

Honest opinion. It looks the same to me on camera. I am sure it made a difference irl. Overall it looks amazing!!!! The more prep work done the better the paint looks. I personally opt for 5 thin over 3 medium. Less chance of runs and tends to be smoother
@Smeedia

With thin I always seem to get it dry, a bit heavier and I found I can get it to lay a bit smoother. In the beginning where I showed the orange peel on the fender. The whole car looked like that 😅
