I just recently done the whole trail in roughly 4 1/2 hours. Definitely a challenge. Came across this video and just wanted to say I’m very impressed by the quality. I live right next to the start of the trail in Galax and this definitely gives a good representation of the whole thing. Awesome footage!

Thank you so much for checking out my video and thanks for your kind comment and praise. This is a fantastic trail, still stands out to me even after all this time. One of my favorites for sure. Of course the nearby Creeper Trail gets all the hype and glory, and it is a great trail too, but the New River Trail is far more scenic and a much better ride in my opinion. You must have really been pushing to do it end to end in 4 1/2 hours, but yes definitely doable. I tend to roll much slower with all my camping gear, plus I stop a lot to take photos and video footage. I still have not been back out there to ride the Fries spur, still on my to-do list though. Thanks again for watching, I really appreciate it!

Cumberland Gal Thanks for checking it out. This trip was an awesome experience and much better than I expected too. I had known about it for years but I generally dont care to hike rail trails. Once I got my bike set up I knew this would be fun. I could check out all the highlights and then zoom through the less interesting sections. 53+ miles in two and half days. It was fun!

Hey man thanks for checking out my video. Sorry for my delayed reply, I've not had reliable internet access last few weeks. This was a great ride through some interesting countryside and historical areas, with access to towns close by as well. Despite the name, the New River is supposed to be the oldest in North America, so that is definitely interesting. That old abandoned building is the last remaining structure from an old mining town that no longer exists. There were so many bridges I couldn't even show them all. I'm sure your Glacier trip was awesome, I look forward to watching your videos!

Thank you, my friend! Yeah this was my first bike camping trip and I loved it. It was even more fun than I expected it would be, and I think I might be hooked LOL! Yeah I was packed pretty light, only carrying bare essentials for the most part...my approach was to look at it the same way I would my backpacking hikes, just carrying the stuff on my bike instead of in one pack. So I pretty only carried what I needed, nothing more. The only thing I took on this trip that hadn't been on a backpacking hike were the essential bike tools and spare parts. For backpacking, I'm still looking for ways to cut weight and bulk on every hike, but after this ride, I learned that when I'm on the bike I had room to spare to easily carry a few "luxury" items if I choose to so on future trips. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks so much for watching! I'm already thinking about where my next bike packing trip will take me.

Hey thanks for checking out my video. Sorry for the delay in my reply. This was a great bike camping trip, still stands out even after all these years. It's a really scenic and historic trail, and I enjoyed this trail much more than some of the more well known ones in the area. I got a late afternoon start on the first day, and did not push too hard on the other days, so I made it a 2 night, three day trip. You could certainly do it faster if you wanted to. I carried all the food and supplies I would need. Water is available at strategic locations. I believe there are some options to purchase food as well, but pretty limited unless you were willing to ride pretty far off trail. I didn't really look into that too much since I had everything I needed with me. You can probably google what restaurants or grocery stores, etc, are available in some of the towns along the route. Thanks again for watching. I hope you get to experience this awesome trail.

I have had a lot of request to do a video on how I set up the bike for the bike camping trip. I probably will do that when I can, for normal riding on my local mountain bike trails I have it set up differently so I'll probably just wait and do it when I am on another bike camping ride. If you are thinking about getting into it, I can say its been a lot of fun and I recommend it. If you have a bike already then go for it. I had a really great site on the second night. You should definitely load up your bike and go ride this trail. There are so many access points that you can ride as much or as little as you want. It would probably be nice to visit some family while you’re out there. The overlook has some old house ruins as well as views off both sides of the mountain.

I love all of your videos, but this might be my favorite. Before I started hiking and getting outdoors, I had an encounter with this trail. I went to Blue Cat in Draper and rented a bike for maybe $10. My plan was to ride to Fries and back.... didn't quite make it but did get in 30 miles on the out-and-back. I had maybe 32 ozs of water for this August ride and the bike was falling apart.... seat continued to descend to the bottom and a pedal came off. Needless to say, I had a bad day and could have benefited from current knowledge of water/food needs, equipment, etc LOL. That said, I LOVED this trail. Keena and I have considered bikepacking it as well. Thanks for sharing! It's got me even more motivated to hit the New River Trail again.

Camping is a bit limited but its a great place to ride a bike and see a lot of interesting sights. Sounds like you had quite an "adventure" LOL! Blue Cat actually went out of business, the owner had grown old and retired. The guy who shuttled me from Pulaski to Galax actually bought the Blue Cat business and renamed it New River Outdoor Adventures. Tim is a great guy up there if you need a shuttle or any of his other services. Y'all should definitely go check it out. The easy grade of the trail makes it a very family friendly place.

Hello. We rode a large section of this trail over the course of two days this past September. The trail surface is crushed gravel and cinder and the bridge surfaces are wood (think boardwalks). I have a hybrid bike with 32mm wide tires and I didn't have any trouble. I would not want to ride on anything more narrow though. There were lots of black walnuts scattered on the trail so you need to watch out for those. Restaurants and hotels are going to be found on either end of the trail in either Galax or Pulaski. New River Cabins are right on the trail just after the trailhead in Galax. It's a wonderful trail with a minimal grade. Hope this helps!

I've always largely avoided Rails to Trails because they are usually not very interesting for hiking, but it was a lot of fun on the bike. I've been riding some real mountain bike trails as well and its been challenging but fun, but with all the extra gear (weight) for camping I'll be sticking to the easy trails for bike camping trips for now. Hope you find some interesting trails in your area. Thanks so much for checking out my video, I really appreciate it as always!

This is a great trail to ride a bike. It had a few kind of washed out sections but overall it was a fairly smooth hard packed surface that is easy to ride. Another great video! Thanks for sharing. My wife and I rode this trail from Galax to Fries and back in September. We loved the section from Galax to Fries Junction but the section from Fries Junction to Fries was not that impressive. Wish we'd used that time to ride further up the trail. Oh well, it gives us an excuse to return next year. Have you ridden the Silver Comet Trail outside Atlanta?

Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed it! I agree the section from Galax to Fries Junction is really nice. I still have not been back to ride the spur to Fries. I suspected that it might not be as interesting, still I’d like to complete the trail. If you get a chance to return, try another section of the main trail. There are a lot of scenic sections and points of interest along the main route. No I have not been on that trail in Atlanta. Is it a good one?

The Silver Comet Trail is a wonderful rail trail, completely paved from Smyrna, GA to the Alabama state line (61.5 miles). If you are feeling really adventursome, you can continue on the Chief Ladiga Trail from the AL state line for another 30 miles deeper into Alabama. There is a primitive campground at mile 44.

Absolutely awesome. Loved this video. Actually, I like a lot of your videos. Great information on trails I want to do. I do have a couple of questions, though. (1) It looks like the trail goes through a portion of the Jefferson National Forest on the west side of the river between Fries and Raketown/Ivanhoe. Do you remember any nice campsites around there? I would like to do the same itinerary you did except stay along the trail the second night south of the Foster Falls Area. (2) Now that you have a couple of bike packing trips under your belt, what about going with my son and I on the Greenbrier River Trail in West Virginia. It would be cool to have another rider on the trip and it looks like a cool ride.
@SmellNRoses6 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks for checking out my videos and thanks for the kind comments. The New River Trail is awesome for biking. I had been wanting to check it out for years but rail trails are rarely interesting for hiking. Once I finally got my bike set up I knew it would be a fun trip. I did not like the campground at Chestnut Falls, but it served its purpose. I got a real late start in the evening on the first day so just for logistics it made a stop over there necessary. The trail does pass through a portion of the Jefferson National Forest, but there are no campgrounds on the trail in that section. The New River Trail is still State Park land, bordered by the National Forest. Sometimes the maps do not portray that accurately. The Virginia Highlands Horse Trail does connect with the New River Trail just south of Ivanhoe at Big Branch. It's possible you could hike or ride up the horse trail, leave the state park property, and potentially find a suitable camp site in the national forest there, but I have never been on any portion of that end of the Highlands Horse Trail. I suppose it would be possible to stealth camp somewhere along the trail but as far as I know the only campgrounds are Chestnut Falls and at Foster Falls. I had a great camp site at Foster Falls. I actually changed the date of my trip around the availability of that site. It was definitely one of the best sites at Foster Falls. The Greenbrier River Trail looks pretty interesting, at least portions of it. I had planned on riding that trail this fall but some other things got in the way of scheduling and I ended up doing other things. I may like to check that out next spring or summer.

Hello Smell N Roses, Excellent content on your trail rides. I’ve watched this one and the Virginia Creeper video. Thanks for sharing! Question: Of the two trails which one is more scenic or spectacular? I read a comment you have a sentimental view of the New River trail. I’m planning a ride in May and can only pick one trail. Any advice on this decision…key factors are beauty, vistas and trail condition. Not really worried about elevation, most of the group have ebikes. Thanks,
@SmellNRoses2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching my videos and thank you for your kind words. Both trails are scenic and each has their charms. For me personally though I really prefer the New River Trail. Both trails are in great shape and well maintained, but the New River Trail does have a few sections that are a little rough. Overall the Creeper is a smoother ride. The Creeper is also going to be much more crowded, depending on when you go. One thing to consider, I’m pretty sure the New River Trail does not allow electric bikes. Its a state park and usually they prohibit them, but check with the park to verify. You should be fine on the Creeper since its on National Forest land or private property easements.

@@SmellNRoses Thank you for the reply and insights. Good news: A check of the Virginia DCR website and the Virginia administrative Code shows no prohibition for ebikes. Thanks for thinking of that. Now we know. Cheers.

I have enjoy riding some local mountain biking trails and I have rode some of the forest roads higher up the mountain, but yeah some of those bike trails and horse trails are pretty intense to try to ride while also fully loaded with gear. I don't have the fitness for that. I agree that for now any bike packing will be on rails trails. I might also add the the reverse is equally true....the only way I'd do a rails trail is on my bike LOL! I generally have no interest in hiking them on foot. Thanks so much for watching, my friend. Indeed this was a very fun trip, I enjoyed it even more than I expected that I would. I really have not given much thought to my next bikepacking trip, but will definitely have to plan something. It is difficult to find good trails to bike camp. I've enjoy several mountain bike trails for general riding, but they either don't offer camping or even if they did the terrain/conditions would be too rough to try ride them fully loaded out for camping. On the other hand, lots of multi-use trails in the national forest, but often the horses have torn them up so bad that the bike riding is tough. I guess for camping with the bike, I'm going to mainly be looking at rails trails or possibly some forest road routes for now. Have you though about doing some bikepacking?
@bigzach3226 жыл бұрын

Epic! Really enjoyed this trip. I've never done such a trip. Do you carry a tool kit? Do you have the means to fix a flat tire? How long was the vehicle shuttle you had and curious as to what he charged you. Could you have asked for better weather?
@SmellNRoses6 жыл бұрын
It was an epic trip and I really enjoyed it. Indeed the weather was absolutely perfect, a little warm the second day but cool at nights. It was a lot of fun and even better than I expected. This was my first ever bike camping trip but my gear and bike set up worked perfectly, I may just do some minor tweaking for the next trip. Yes I do carry bike tools. I carry them on all my rides, even my exercise rides on my local mountain bike trails. I've already had to repair one flat when I was out riding recently. There are still a couple of tools and spare parts I'd like to put in my kit for "just in case" but I do have most of the essential tools, spare parts, and tubes with me on all rides. The bike allows me to travel farther and faster than I would on foot so I would hate to get broken down a long way from the trail head LOL! The shuttle from Pulaski to Galax probably took some where around 45 minutes. It was late in the afternoon on a friday, on a holiday weekend no less, so there was heavy traffic on both I-81 and I-77. Unfortunately I had to pay a little extra for the shuttle since I was solo, but the "damage" was limited by my excellent negotiating skills LOL! If you were with a group of 2, 3, or more riders, the price per bike/person would be very reasonable.

If have ever ridden the Virginia Creeper trail, there is a slight downhill grace from Whitetop Station to Damascus. Is there a downhill grace on the New River Trail and if so, which direction is downhill? Thanks
@SmellNRoses Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for checking out my video. I have been on the Creeper as well and yes its more than “slight” downhill if you start at Whitetop. On the New River Trail, if you start in Galax you’ll technically be going mostly downhill all the way until you get near Claytor Lake. After crossing the river the last time at Hiwassee its starts climbing back up towards Draper and Pulaski. The steepest grade still isnt as long or as steep as that grade at Whitetop. Personally I really enjoyed the New River Trail. I found it much more scenic and interesting than the Creeper. I was in Galax recently and noticed the trailhead is currently closed. I’m not sure what they are working on. You may have to get on the trail at another access point, check the park website before you go.

Yeah that's the thing with all the Virginia State Parks, none of them allow wild camping. All require you to stay at designated camp sites. New River Trail has three campgrounds, but one is on an island so its only accessible by kayakers and canoes. If this park is missing anything, it would be another small campground somewhere more towards the north end of the trail...it's a long way between Pulaski and Foster Falls with no where to camp overnight.

Thanks for checking out my video. This is a wonderful trail, very scenic. One of my favorites. I do not know much about electric bikes. If you have good tires and suspension you’d probably be ok. Although this is a rail trail, it is bumpy and a lot of loose surfaces. I rode it on a mountain bike with no problems, but I heard a lot of complaints from others who were on road bikes or hybrids. Bear in mind that horses also use some segments of the trail. Also you’d need to check the regulations to see if electric bikes are allowed on this trail. You should be able to find that info on the state park’s website or by giving them a call.

By going in that direction, the ride was mostly flat or downhill. There were a few minor ups and downs of course. The most difficult climb was near the end, when the trail turns away from the river and climbs up towards Draper. It was about a 5% grade that continued for a few miles. Once reaching the top of that hill the trail leveled out again.

Some of those trestles would have scared me to death man. Lol Beautiful views though. Not something I would want to hike, but the biking allowed you to move quickly through the uninteresting stuff. Overall I loved the scenery, that waterfall around the 4 min mark is nice. Was that dam you showed part of a lock system on the river?
@SmellNRoses6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I thought about you on several of those bridges. Man especially on the second day there were several trestles on the way up to Pulaski that were really high and really rickety, I could feel them shaking and swaying as I went across LOL! No this is definitely not a place I'd want to hike, that's why I had never been there despite knowing about it and researching many of the "highlights" of the trail for years. It was just perfect on the bike though. I really enjoyed it, so much so that I would definitely ride some of the sections again in the future, and I'd like to go back at some point and ride the spur line that I skipped. I don't know if there were any locks on this section of the river. The rail line that was there throughout the early 20th Century is what boomed industrial development in that area, prior to that there was not much of anything large scale going on in that area. The two dams are for hydro power and are still in operation today. One of them seemed to be shut down for some major renovations, it didn't have any water impounded and there was a lot of construction equipment around it, but it did have signs saying the closure was temporary. The signs were for kayakers who would have to do a different portage route since there was no "lake" at that dam. Well it was a great trip. I normally bypass these rail trails but now I am looking into more of them, they are a lot of fun for biking. Thanks for checking out the video, my friend!
