Smelly, potentially toxic milk found being dumped in rural Utah

After months of excess toxic milk being dumped on land west of Interstate 15, residents of Greenville are worried about ground water contamination. For decades, the hill was a dumping site for whey, a liquid derived from cheese production which is often used as fertilizer. But for months, residents have been documenting trucks dumping large quantities of milk that become toxic on the hill.

It's a different situation for dairy. The US government subsidizes dairy pretty heavily as a reliable source of calories & protein in case total war breaks out again. It's a holdover of lessons learned in WWII. The US drafted close to 10% of the population, and feeding them ~3600 calories daily was a colossal undertaking. The assumption is that that may be required again, so it's easier to keep paying indefinitely for a surplus of milk that can't be realistically utilized in peace time.

My family are dairy producers. When we need to dump milk, we follow protocol by using our manure injection system where it is incorporated into our crop fields where it becomes fertilizer and feeds soil bacteria to make richer soils. They ARE giving it away to hungry families and children. If there is no excess, there is no milk to give away to hungry families and children. What you are seeing is a byproduct of excess supply, which is created through government subsidies, to keep milk available and inexpensive to underprivileged populations. It seems counter intuitive, but this waste is actually because we make too much so it exists to give it to hungry kids and families…. They just make a little too much extra…. that’s the part you see here, But they have to estimate the overage conservatively because if they get it just a little wrong, just a little too little and the prices spike and underprivileged populations suffer. And don’t forget, it’s perishable and doesn’t last forever and also cows have to be milked regardless of demand fluctuations. Essentially, this wasting is so we CAN do exactly what you said in your comment and after we supply school programs, pantries, etc., we still will have a little left over that has to be dumped. Sure, Having no excess milk does prevent us from wasting it all over the ground, which seems good, but it also makes it way more valuable and therefore will be priced out of reach of underprivileged populations and charity organization budgets, and epidemics of malnourished children begin. Now… dumping it where and the way they are in this report… I don’t know. Sounds like they need to find a better way to waste it. This is just one of many examples where one side thinks the other side is evil or dumb or (insert derogatory word here) when really pretty much everyone wants the same good things for humanity, they just have different ideas on how to achieve those goals for humanity. And sometimes what seems like the right thing to do… like don’t make excess milk that has to be wasted… is actually harmful to society, and doing the seemingly wrong thing… like wasting perfectly good milk… is actually extremely beneficial for society.

This is not the processing plants job, so truckers have either an agreement with who owns that site, or they all deceided themselves that this is the place to get rid of the milk without paying to dump it at the treatment plant. This is what happens when big corporations buy out and push out smaller family owned dairies. The cows have to be milked but they don't have enough trucks to ship it out or enough buyers to buy them out, and no contracts with other companies to turn the excess into cheese or some other product, so they dump it onto to ground. Insanity.

The government has subsidized milk for nearly 100 years. The guaranteed milk price lead to enormous over production of milk. The milk/cheese/dry milk processing facilities cannot process the abundance of milk, nor do they want to. A surplus of dairy products would decrease the selling price. Why would they increase productivity, only to decrease selling price? The farmer gets paid for the milk whether it gets processed or not. It's dirty, and disturbing, and backed by the government. We have the same issue in central MI. That raw milk, spread in fields, smells DISGUSTING!

You guys have no idea. If a load tests positive for ANY amount of antibiotics (1 cows milk into 80-100k lbs of milk) then the whole load has to be dumped. Where you ask? Well if the dairy doesn’t have a wastewater pond and the truck driver is now responsible for it, then this is an option that microbes will break down for us. This happens often, coming from someone who works in the dairy processing industry. And for those saying “turn it into powder or cheese”, there are standards of acidity and quality that has to be upheld for accepting milk into ANY processing facility. So if this is the case and you guys don’t like it, please offer up logical options. PS, it can’t be used for animal feed either if there is a positive antibiotic load.

This happens with just about every single milk company in America I’ve heard truckers for a lot of years come in and tell me of how every milk plant they’ve been to they don’t milk. It’s so crazy to me because if they talked with the local communities and we all work together we could use that as fertilizer

@omi_god Can't give you exact statutes, but as far as milk goes, it would be under required processing times at the plant. Most jurisdictions do not allow milk to be sold directly without pasteurization to the customer. So since milk production from cows is fairly static, if there is at plant, they are required by law to throw it away.

They does the opposite of benefiting citizens so if these companies receive any money from the government then they should immediately be investigated and put out of business if found guilty. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Tax money is explicitly supposed to be used in the benefit of the citizens.

Republicans CUT FDA ...NO COPS THIS why this Happens
@retiredcryptohunter9031
@retiredcryptohunter9031 6 ай бұрын
@@deadfisfhalequin2304 this has already been happening and the funding bill for the FDA just happened about a month and a half ago. The FDA is already corrupt and using tax payer money to profit those big food and drug companies instead of benefiting the citizens like taxes are supposed to do. Food and drug should also be kept separate but lobbyists in congress use it to allow food companies to add ingredients into our food that makes us sick and benefits drug companies. I retired from the military last year after serving 22 years. While I was active duty I was always told to watch my diet and that I was borderline diabetic with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I moved to the Philippines with my wife after I retired and 6 months after moving here I was no longer borderline diabetic, my cholesterol and blood pressure are also normal now and I am still eating like I was before. If you think the FDA is trying to help us then you’re sadly mistaken.

30+ years ago in upstate NY a local cheese plant dumped whey waste on a farmers field. A practice that at the time was allowed. But one year an excessive amount of rain inundated the area, flooding many fields. This event contaminated the wells of many houses in the area.
