the best way to express the tonal shift is the halloween episode from the first season, where its largely playing the horror theme as you would expect from a horror including a very tense chase scene with the forest demon, only for everything to set up for one joke which results in everyone at the halloween party acting even more monstrous in an absurd way that it makes it funnier

The episode that really stands out to me as an example of them breaking from the mold is definitely the episode Brother's Egg. Because just like the Brazil episode they advertise the episode and word the episode synopsis like it's just gonna be another wacky smiling friends episode where they help a mad scientist and hijinks ensue. But then surprise it's another episode with insanely realistic dialogue about the fallout between two brothers and how they try to repair their relationship.

That episode was a slow burn to me. I've really come to appreciate not just the brotherly drama plot, but moments like the Jared Fogle prank (especially how Pim and Charlie reacted to it), Professor Psychotic being hopelessly not good with women and how Allan grew from not wanting to watch the show on the TV to being moved to tears by the end of it.

The scene where "Doug" (the rotoscoped brother played by Joel Haver) appears for the first time might be my all time favorite scene in season 2 if not the whole show thus far. We go from a mad scientist declaring his plan to take over the world and laughing to evil music, then we are snapped back to reality like whiplash. "Professor Psychotic" drops his evil persona and fake voice he was putting on and has a hyper realistic, awkward conversation with his brother who has been quietly putting up with his crap for years. Its perfect. The first time I saw that I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe, I had to stop the video and rewatch it because I missed stuff due to laughing too hard. "This is what I care about." "CARE ABOUT SOMETHING BETTER!"

The thing about Smiling Friends Go to Brazil is longtime Cartoon Network viewers knew exactly where the plot was going, because Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends did an episode called “Foster’s Goes to Europe”. The spirit is there. Smiling Friends’s dead end happens at a later stage than Foster’s, so it allows it to stand separately and do things different.

There are SO many references to Oneyplays and Zachs other work that it's crazy. Like there's a very fast scene in Spamtopia when there's no more rules and everyone starts going insane, there's a guy pulling another guy into the sky and he screaming bloody murder, and it's the exact same in Hellbenders when Zachs character is being taken to heaven by Jesus. It's maybe a half a second and I was like "that's hellbenders!" I love being a long time fan and seeing these little things. 😂

I think like 60% of it is intentional references and the other 40 is just their sense of humor being predictably ridiculous sometimes the scenarios feel just different enough to be a coincidence

I think the episodes with a shorter and more focused scope worked the best. Examples are the one with gwimbly, the halloween one, spamtopia and the aliens. They felt way more structured than the rest and that helped them to be more enjoyable I think. Each joke becomes unexpected and novel. On the other hand, the president episode, the allan one and the christmas one felt very "flat" in a structural sense and larger in scope. A bunch of things happened super quickly and paid off at that same speed. The allan episode is special in this sense on the fact that the animation is very very entertaining on its own and the downtime was rather low. I'm really looking forward to season 3. Your cameo was really funny.

Brother's Egg was the weakest episode for this reason. It was too ambitious for how short the episode was. Two characters with different arcs is too much for 11 minutes.

I'd imagine having a shorter runtime presents interesting challenges for the writing team with it's own pros and cons. One pro being the very fast and visual humor similing friends employs for it's episodes. But yeah, on the other hand stuff like the things you said can happen.

I've been watching you for years now, probably around a decade now. I've been graduated from college for a year, but I remember downloading your old food fight review and other reviews on my old Kindle fire in middle school to watch when I'd go to the river and had no wifi 😂. Well said. To me, the comedic timing plays a huge part in the flow of the episode. I feel like whenever family guy is ready to do a jump cut, you can anticipate it because we are so used to the flow of family. Whereas smiling friends its completely unexpected.

Seeing you in a Gorillaz shirt, as a longtime fan of them both musically and art wise, makes my heart happy, Doug Also I think you nailed the neck snapping tone perfectly. I’ll never forget watching the scientist episode and seeing the person they had to make smile was fucking Jared Fogle. The music, him emerging from the darkness, Charlie and Pim’s horrified expressions, only for the boss to laugh and it’s revealed to just be Glep. It was the perfect combo of hilarity and absolute dread.

TBH it seems like one of those things where if you have problems with it, its probably more because of your own tastes than any failing of the show. Thats the problem with super specific, unique kinds of content. It can be done incredibly well and be a 10/10 to the people who get it, but still be a 5/10 to others out of no fault of its own.

I liked it, I felt like the first episode almost mirrored the first one from the 1st season though, where the resolution to plot A is for the main character to kill the villain in plot B. They made such good episodes in the first season that it would feel cheap to use them as templates, but also it seems like they cant top them. I think the ideas of the episodes are more funny than the actual executions. A lot like my other fav show, WKUK.

I think season 2 is good, season 1 was something really special. It's all good stuff, but S1 was just so out of nowhere. I think a sophomore slump is totally expected in this instance. But they had enough great moments to keep the momentum (I personally think the Jeremy/eyeball world episode is fantastic, just goddamn nuts start to finish) but obviously they're finding out what the show looks like long term. They get quadruple points for putting Doug in an episode, it's just so... Fitting? I guess? And the bit works in the show too, a Nostalgia Critic Parody ALSO serving as a cameo is just great meta. If you know, you know, and its all the better for it. But if you don't know its just another weird moment in a weird show. Good stuff all around, looking forward to Season 3!

I guess as people said its not as good as season 1 but man was it a blast, the UFO and Spamtopia episodes were so entertaining and so surprising. I love love love the different super unique styles of animation all blended together. I think it is really the best antidote to the cynicism of Rick & Morty as they once discussed about creating the show. Its just fun. Also seeing one’s fav youtubers like RedLetterMedia and Nostalgia Critic show up is great
