About The Graduate's ending, the reason why it lingers is because the director was out that day. The guy that filled in forgot to say "cut" after the two are smiling. It was supposed to be a happy ending, but the actors were just kind of left there wondering what they were supposed to be doing. When the director saw this, he loved it too much to edit it out.

Its weird how many extremely iconic Dustin Hoffman moments are like that, the Taxi that he screams at in Mid Night Cowboy wasn't supposed to be there, the driver ignored a sign warning that they were shooting on that road.

Not sure it was "saved" by the ending, but "The Lego Movie" was certainly elevated to the modern pantheon by its ending. What seemed like a silly little distraction blatantly made to sell toys suddenly gets turned on its ear with a real-world emotional whammy that no one could have seen coming. Blew me the hell away, something I never thought I'd say going in. I do hope you do more Top 11s. I have missed them. Dare I say, I'm nostalgic for them.

I think movies saved by the ending leave an overall positive feeling, so they're easier to forget. Whereas movies ruined by the ending come with a bitter tinge of disappointment that sticks around.

@@MrDj232 Yes. There's something about how humans view the world that makes us remember what's broken or missing more than what works. It has the advantage of encouraging us to fix what's broken (if we can) but we also tend to forget or overlook what we have that's working well.

I’ll add Saving Mr. Banks. The movie starts slow, but gets more and more interesting as you go along. When Walt Disney finally talks about how his dad had such an influence on him as well, everything comes full circle. Then the final scene in the movie theater has such an emotional impact. The movie isn’t bad before, but it wouldn’t be nearly as memorable without the ending. And if your dad has passed away as well…you will be in tears!

Unpopular opinion: There is one thing I absolutely hate about the Prestige. SPOILERS BELOW Why the hell did Christian Bale's character not tell his wife he has a twin? She is clearly distressed by the fact that her husband is another man each day and so she commits suicide. I am supposed to feel sorry for him but all I can think off is "Why didn't you tell her, you moron!". And please don't give me the "Oh, a wizard never reveals his trick. Them being secret twins was the sacrifice they had to endure." Like she was going to tell anyone! She is literally part of the family, she has a daughter with you, you idiot, I'm pretty sure that elevates her on a level of trust where you could have told her that secret. And when she is clearly not well because you keep changing and she is gaslit by all that, you still wouldn't tell her to ease her pain and assure her that the man she married truly loves her? Like, no. No, that one thing about the film killed it for me. And there was absolutely no commentary on that shitty behavior from anyone. Sorry about the rant. Its fine if you like the Prestige and I agree, the twist was really dark and well put together.

@@wjzav1971 it’s a little deeper than that, you have to remember Christian bales character is two characters and most of their communication is done offscreen. There are scenes where you can tell brother A really loves his wife and wants to tell her the truth, but brother B is more obsessed with the trick. There’s also an element of brother A being afraid to lose his wife by telling her. At the point he trusts her enough to tell her, then she’s been lied to for years, and by revealing that, he would lose her. Imagine telling the mother of your child she’s been with your twin brother for half the relationship. The film is about obsession, and the lengths people will go to achieve their obsession. Both what you see with Hugh Jackmans character, trying to accomplish the worlds greatest trick, and what you don’t see Christian Bales characters who have made their whole lives about the one trick are different facets of obsession.

​@@wjzav1971 She already uncovered the secret. That's what their last fight was all about, and she even wanted to tell the mistress. It's never just about trusting her w/ a secret, she flat out says that she can't just live like that. You know, having two different people as her husband? One of whom is in love w/ another woman? The two Bordens can only live half a life, and she would have to play along in order to maintain that illusion as demonstrated by the magician who continually pretends to be a cripple. Hence, telling her the truth would've led to her suicide anyway. It's the reason that she killed herself in the first place.

This came as a shock to me as the theme of this movie and basic plot seems very very inspired by a 1993 bangladeshi movie called Chaka: The Wheel. Its about 2 bull cart drivers who transport rice from village to village. About 90% of the movie is them riding from one village to another with an unidentified dead body and only does the last 3 minutes or so redeem the whole movie

The Straight Story is based on a true story. Alvin Straight was a real person who traveled from Iowa to Wisconsin on a lawnmower to see his dying brother in 1994.

I love The Straight Story through and through. The soundtrack is amazing, and every little triumph of the old man feels like an incredible acomplishment. The ending is the cherry on top of the cake. But I care about this broken people. I think is one of the best David Lynch's films .

"The Truman Show" would be my pick. The movie's 1st and 2nd act are decent, and the worldbuilding is creative, but it also feels kinda weird and slow-paced. The ending however when Truman finally realizes what kind of world he's actually living in, blew my mind! Everything from the score to the sky motives to Jim Carrey and Ed Harris' subtle acting to the satisfying feeling of him escaping, make the slow-pacing up to that point feel worth it. The movie's Platonic allegory also just pops and makes you look back at the entire movie in a different light

Nah I respectfully disagree. The entire film is a masterpiece. The way the 1st half gets us into Truman's world is beautifully set up and then the 2nd half shows us how they built Truman's world is absolutely fantastic. The ending had me on the edge of my seat but I wouldn't be as invested if it wasn't for the way the story built up Truman's slow realization of what's going on.

But then I realized, that's the point. He finally has his own life and privacy, we're no longer entitled to his story.

Nothing about Anakin's downfall makes a lick of sense. 1. What's the first thing that Qui-Gon asks Shmi when he realizes Anakin is Force-sensitive? "Who's the father?" Why? Because he knows that it's hereditary. 2. They take Anakin off to the Jedi Order, because that's what they do when they find a Force-sensitive child. They're actively searching the galaxy for them. 3. Anakin grows up and falls in love with Padme. The Jedi tell him he's not supposed to marry or start a family. 4. He does so anyway. 5. Meanwhile, his mother, who's been left behind all these years on Tatooine, gets killed. Anakin avenges her, which is his first truly evil act on the path to the Dark Side. 6. Anakin starts having nightmares about Padme dying. 7. The Jedi are no help. He should rid himself of attachment and love, they say. 8. With no assistance from the folks who should be looking out for him, he's easy prey for Palpatine, and we end up with Darth Vader. Now, let's look at those first three points. When you're actively collecting everyone in the galaxy you can find who carry a certain hereditary trait, and then forbidding them to reproduce, what you're doing is selectively breeding that trait out of the galactic populace. *The Jedi were effectively running a galaxy-wide eugenics program to make themselves go extinct!* And then... they went extinct. Even if the Sith didn't deserve to win, the Jedi absolutely deserved to lose. On the other hand, had the Jedi held a healthy attitude towards families, everything would have been different. They couldn't take Shmi with them because they didn't have the resources to free two slaves... but that all changed the moment they reached Coruscant. If they had gone back for her the next day, she never would have been killed, and Anakin never would have needed to avenge her. If Anakin had been openly encouraged to fulfill his love for Padme, he could have gotten advice about his dreams that were supportive rather than alienating, and then Palpatine would have had no opening to sink his claws into. Everything bad that happened to the Jedi order was ultimately their own fault for their nonsensical doctrines regarding love and families.

@@masonwheeler6536well, the Jedi Order is shown to be in steep decline by the time of The Clone Wars. Although The Force can be passed on genetically it does also pop up at random. It’s everywhere, some people are just sensitive to it. Also, the Jedi forbid attachments specifically because of situations like Anakin. The council refuses to train him because he has already developed too many emotional attachments, and those attachments are what kills the order. Rage over the death of his mother, desperation to save his wife and unborn children, loyalty to Palpatine who treats him like a mentor, the pain of betrayal from Obi-Wan, the man who he sees as a father. Watching the Republic he swore to defend become more corrupt. And what makes it a tragedy for Anakin Skywalker is that he could have just walked away from the Jedi and the war, but his attachments, to Palpatine, to Kenobi, to Amidala, they kept him from saving himself. Hence the parallel with his apprentice Ahsoka Tano. She had a similar journey alongside Anakin, dealt with similar conflicts of conscience, and she chose to walk away. Rather than stay and be consumed by rage, she chose another path and dealt with the ultimate consequences rather than try and solve every problem on her own.

I'll add Lego Movie as an honorable mention: the third act didn't necessarily save the movie (not that it needed saving), but it shifts the tone of the movie slightly, gives extra weight to the protagonist(s)'s obstacles, and adds an extra layer to the movie's whole message.

Man, I was waiting for "The Other" and maybe "Skeleton Key" or "The Ring" . These movies I found absolutely boring almost all the way through and then the ending hit like a truck and actually gave me nightmares. Other than that pretty good list. Yes. I haven't seen it for a while, but it's very affecting. I disagree that the road to the end is boring. There's a build up at the start, some family relationships that are touching, and then the quiet courage and self-effacement of the journey. I love it.

Rogue One, heck yeah. That movie single-handedly made me hyped for the new trilogy. The story was fine, the characters were ok. The last third set me up for “that” being the new style and theming going forward with the franchise. The ending is fuckin’ baller. And then they fucked it all up…but I still like Rogue One.

To me, the thing about the movies in Legendary Picture's Kaijuverse is we spend most of the time with dull, boring humans, most of whom don't return for the next movie, even if they do live to the end. I also find the worldbuilding in a world of giant monsters lacking. People are just OK with these multi-ton behemoths leveling whole cities to the ground? We don't even have that kind of reaction from real people to natural disasters! And they should upend the whole scientific, economic, political, and religious fabric of their world, but the people appear to be just "meh" about it. Pacific Rim handles it way better!

Oddly enough, one of MY picks for this category would actually have been the movie 'Inside Out'. I mean, don't get me wrong--I TOTALLY understood Riley's view point because I've done the big cross country move thing and at roughly the same age. But when I watched the movie for the first time, I had just moved from Michigan (Where I'd lived for the past 26 years) to South Carolina. The end of the movie where Riley just shuts down and even tries to go back to Minnesota had me crying my eyes out, ESPECIALLY when she breaks down to her parents. 'Inside Out' could have been a run-of-the-mill coming-of-age movie but the seriousness of the ending just hit so hard with me.

Honestly one of the best war films focusing on the Japanese side during WWII. An absolutely gut-wrenching tragedy as a boy tries to keep his little sister alive after losing their family to the US bombing campaigns of Japan. Really embraces the tragedy of war even when it is not on the battlefields.

I was on the verge of crying until it started replaying old scenes in black and white, basically being incredibly cheesy and ruining the serious tone of the whole film. Honestly, fuck that ending for being so sappy and cheapening the entire journey. I'd gladly edit those little scenes out to make it punchy and heavy like it should be.

Word of god: Gareth Edwards (director of Rogue One) revealed in a podcast that he was going to do an alternate ending with *the main characters surviving as he believed Disney and Lucasfilms wouldn't approve the original ending with the entire cast being killed by the end of film. To his surprise and relief, Kathy Kennedy, the President of Lucasfilms and Disney weren't bothered with the ending where the main characters died and allowed him to film it.*

I would add the original Saw. Not that it’s bad heading into the ending. But it reminded me a lot of Se7en in terms of tone and plot. And some of the acting can get a little rough. And at one point I wondered if the dead guy in the room with them was really dead. But they do a great job setting it up to where you are certain Zepp is the Jigsaw killer. But then, the clock runs out, Dr. Gordon cuts off his foot, the brilliant “Hello Zepp” theme starts up and the real Jigsaw killer stands up and reveals himself. It’s the one twist ending that no matter how many times I see it, I get goosebumps. It’s that awesome

All I can think of about that movie, is how unfair it was of Jigsaw to place the key to bathtub guy's chain IN the tub with him so that it would get accidentally flushed out when he awoke and pulled the plug. I mean Jigsaw claims that he always plays fair and leaves a way out for victims who TRULY want to escape. But that one was just bullshit. Anyone would panic if they woke up in a filled bathtub.

@@sansthedrummer But wasn't it shown at the end of 1, when Jigsaw finally gets up and casually tells the boy that he did in fact have the chance to get free at the very start, that he very much intended it that way? 3 may then have retconned it, but speaking of Amanda, as I recall it she wasn't so much being careless, as she was completely acting on her own accord, against Jigsaw's wishes, in that she deliberately placed the victims in unescapable traps. It's been a long time since I've seen any of them because I realized that kind of gore and torture porn just wasn't for me, but I vaguely remember Jiggy in either 3 or 4 saying to her that she's gone too far.

It's one story that keeps zooming out to a bigger picture where more keeps getting revealed (convoluted and over the top funny at the same time). It may have been a retcon to fix that little plothole, or it goes into Amanda's character and her disregard for her victims (the unwinnable trap thing). My speculation is more headcanon than anything

Some of the things I love about Rogue One's ending: 1) It really gives a sense of how truly invincible Vader was without any Jedi around to stop him, 2) It flows really well into A New Hope, and 3) It really cements how meaningful the sacrifice of the characters was, and yet how those who gave everything for a chance to stop the Empire were lost to history.

One thing I dislike is the fact that they made it that the weakness was purposely created when in fact, it's a natural weakness that just couldn't be helped when a moon sized station had a planet destroying laser... It was naturally a bomb that just needed a spark. A warning about trusting technology too much. And idea that, while technology can be helpful, it can backfire if you are not careful

I watched the Straight Story a few times and while it is not for everyone I do recommend everyone watch it at least once all the way through just to get that tearful ending. I think the reason that I rewatch it is that it was one of the few films that I watched with my Grandfather while he was battling cancer, one of those things that doesn't make sense until it has passed.

I think Doug really exaggerates how much of The Straight Story is spent on watching Alvin drive on his lawnmower. I mean, stuff happens in the movie. He meets and talks with a good number of people. There's that stretch in the middle where his lawnmower breaks down in a small town and he spends some time with the people there. Honestly, I was never really bored watching it.

I'm from the US. Knowing how repetitive/boring the scenery can be driving through farm country, especially down I80 in Iowa (my wife has family there), was depicted well in the movie. I consider the movie slow paced, but not boring. The interactions he has, and the wisdom he shares, with the people he meets on the way is the best part of the movie in my opinion. The ending is superb though.

Their hope is that Hartford is a sanctuary from the mist so they resolve to travel there. The books ends, we don't know if they make it or what.

One film that I can think of from the top of my head that was saved by the ending was Jurassic World. I'm not saying that the film as a whole was bad, it did have other cool/fun elements. But when I got to that climax when the T-Rex shows up to fight the Indominus Rex resulting in an epic monster battle... my head exploded when I first saw that.

I personally loved THE STRAIGHT STORY for what it is throughout. Call me crazy, but even though it was about Alvin driving on a lawnmower for majority of the movie, I felt there were some heartwarming moments in it that deserved to be mentioned, along with Richard Farnsworth’s great performance before his tragic death the following year. Maybe I’m the only one who thinks of this idea, but you should do a Nostalgia Critic review of THE STRAIGHT STORY.

One movie that benefitted from a memorable ending would be Sleepaway Camp. Pretty much all of the film was just a generic slasher film, bullies, gruesome deaths, lots of swearing, you’re immediately aware of who the villain is, it’s just a Friday The 13th wannabe. But with it’s twist being well-built up and revealing a very chilling final shot, it does make it more memorable. Honestly, without the ending, Sleepaway Camp would be one of the most forgettable horror films, and the ending is pretty much the only thing people remember the most about the film.

I was working at the movie theater when Straight Story came out. We showed it for one weekend. Sold about 50 tickets in total for 8 showings in a 100+ seat room. It's a good movie but my god it's boring.

I'd also like to mention the original Lego Movie. Of course, the majority of the movie was incredible, fun, gorgeous and hilarious, but up until then it was just a fun crossover of various Lego franchises with some clever deconstructions of Hero tropes. But what elevated it from a fun movie to a brilliant movie for me is the ending, where it's all revealed to be taking place in the mancave of an adult Lego enthusiast who refuses to let his son play with his stuff even though it's a freaking toy, and thus forming a rift between father and son. Is it all in the minds of the father and son? Are the characters actually alive in some way? It's left kinda ambiguous, but it works. I also like how it goes out of its way to explain that no, Emmet isn't The Special and there was no prophecy declaring him the chosen one, because literally anyone could have the potential to be The Special if they just see it in themselves, which is a brilliant deconstruction of the trope.

Sorry Doug, but “Usual Suspects” is a masterwork as a whole. The mystery is set up from the beginning and it takes the whole runtime to reveal the actual story of who is Keyser Soze. It’s also a testament to how Bryan Singer toyed with the actors by making them each believe they could be Soze; he even pissed off Gabriel Byrne when the film premiered and the identity was revealed (they made peace fairly quickly)

One of my favorite endings is “Cross of Iron” with James Coburn, Maximilian Schell and James Mason. *SPOILERS HERE* The story followed two german officers during the WW2 fighting against the Russians. The main character, Sargent Steiner, has an iron cross and his rival Captain Stransky wants it(but he doesn’t want to just have it, he wants the honor of winning it) so he betrayed Steiner, putting him through a lot of horrible war stuff. At the end, Steiner confronts Stransky and the climax is both of them fighting side by side against the russians. Stransky says: “i will show you how a german officer can fight” Then Steiner replies: “and i will show you where the iron crosses grow” In the battlefield, both are shooting at the Russians but, Stransky slips and fall to the ground, Steiner yelled at him to get up but, Stransky says that he need to reload his gun and he doesn’t know how(the man who wants to win the iron cross doesn’t know how to reload a gun) and Steiner just laugh as the ending credits rolls. At the end you hear Steiner is still laughing until you the sound of bullets firing, letting you know that both of them die at the hands of the Russians.

For me, one movie I know of that I felt was saved by the ending, of all films, was 'The Godfather Part III'. I know that it's not on par with the first two films, but the whole third act at the opera and with the elderly Michael...I'm telling you, it blew me away every time. Everything about it worked, and even Sofia Coppola's acting, I thought, was at its most decent there. Say what you will about Part III, but for me, the ending was its saving grace.

It's been a LONG time since Top 11s, and I'm happy to see it back, and what a power comeback it was. This list was great 👍 definitely excited for whatever the next Top 11 is :)

The Empty Man... the movie is pretty solid throughout, but that ending! I love when I have to pick my jaw up off of the floor after watching a movie. Best horror movie I have seen since Hereditary. If you like Lovecraftian horror, don't miss this one. It's the kind of movie that will have you thinking about it for days after you see it.

If you do any more lists, I would like to see more "positive" ones like this. There's so much negative crap going on that going online to see "Top worst movies" or "Worst endings" just kinda compounds on top of real life. Maybe some small things like "Best hair from non Disney films" or "Interesting aspects of movie scripts"

Buried with Ryan Reynolds is very similar. The entire movie is shot in a casket, watching him desperately try to find a way out. He has a phone and a lighter and for an hour, the suspense builds and builds as his air starts to run out. Only to end with a twist. Truly a great movie.
