The Pro Chess League is a $150,000 16-player team tournament taking place on Chess.com, featuring Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri and many more top players. The first five weeks are a Swiss tournament that will see half the teams eliminated before the Playoffs, which are an 8-team knockout.
Each team has 6-10 players, but only 4 play each week, with an average rating cap of 2550 and at least one woman in each line-up. Each member of the team plays each member of the opposing team at 10+2 rapid chess. In case of a tie the players play another round of games at a faster time control.

If noone expects you to win, you can just focus on playing your game. And you have the freedom of preparing specifically for this game to make history, meanwhile Magnus - probably - rather focusses on winning the tournament, rather than winning against some "random" 2500.

As is mentioned in the video, at San Antonio 1972 Ken Smith played the actual gambit several times. In one of Smith’s games with White, the game opened 1. e4 d6. Bent Larsen provided written commentary on this stating “Stronger is 1…c5, which wins a Pawn”.

I occasionally played the gambit back in the 70s. I seem to recall an article/column around that time called "The Smith-Morra Gambit is busted!" by Larry Evans or perhaps Larry Christiansen, the point being White doesn't receive sufficient compensation for the pawn. To his credit (I think) Ken Smith didn't give up easily, publishing several booklets with new variations that seemed to give White a slight edge. I don't think the gambit ever scored a victory for White in GM play though.

Hello Mr. Agadmator, I am newcomer in this field Chess games. So the question: I hear you say sometimes, this is now completely new game. Does it mean all the later consequent positions are never reached may be following any other moves? or does it mean that particular move is new in the sequence? Is there any online tool to check this ? Thanks and regards.
@Creatismus
@Creatismus Жыл бұрын
It means that after that particular move is played, the resulting position is completely unique and has never appeared in a Master level chess game before. I say "Master level" because when you look at the Lichess database for example, which includes all the online games played on the website, the "new" move from this game, 5. Nc3, has actually been played over 5000 times. So agadmator is using the Masters database, which only shows tournament games by very strong players, and in that database, 5. Nc3 has never been played in the position from 1:30. You can check the Masters database yourself by going to the Lichess Analysis board and clicking on the book icon.

This is not the Smith Morra gambit. You don't take back the pawn immediately with the queen and lose a tempo when the queen is attacked by the knight. When black takes the pawn you offer a second pawn with the move C3, opening up more lines. If black takes it you take back with the knight. American IM Marc Esserman has written a great book on it, Mayhem in the Morra. I'd love to see Carlsen take Marc on with this gambit.
@jerryk1562

Was it a Morra Gambit? IMHO no, but if ECO says so... In my old literature it's under the category "Qxd4 Sicilian", with mainline 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cd 4.Qxd4. By the way, white doesn't have to play the gambit with 3.c3, in the olden days it was common to see 1.e4 c5 2.d4 cd 3.Nf3 e5 4.Bc4.

I'm confused. If the queen recaptures on move 3, it's not a gambit. The gambit line is 3. c3.

At 7:08, if King to e 8, why not white: rock h 8 check + , giving up the rock = queen take in h8 and then white: Take the pon on G6 check + ! and take back the white rock like that or even try to give check mat to the black ?

Agad is getting so good that it is hard to criticize him, but that is my job. No trips to Never Never Land and that is an amazing growth in his reviews, only one thing that I have to pick on is at 5:32 Magnus moved Qa5 and then Rf1 was played. I hate to say this but, I would have liked a trip to Never Never Land with rook instead to e3. That would have made the game much different for sure and I know Agad, the new improved Agad of today that is, could have tackled this scenario efficiently. Would that have been a better move or worse?

Agadmator, when you say "a completely new game", does that mean the game also didn't transpose into known territory later on?

No, it means that sequence hasn't been played, not that the pieces thereafter never line up again - back when everyone and their dog was playing the queen's gambit declined and London system you would sometimes see new games followed by two moves that took it back to an old position again.

For the pioneer watchers, what does he mean by "completely new game"? There are positions we've seen in online games. Is the criteria supposed to be only those games played in FIDE-rated tournaments?

Yeah if it's not in the database then it's not counted. Of course this is the sort of game that is sure to have happened at lower levels because it's only 5 moves before it isn't following any in the database.
