I know where you are! Well basically, I grew up here and have relatives in your area. I spent a lot of time over there in the 70s visiting relatives. I hope to meet you and Two Toes, maybe we can earn some ice cream, lol. Tell Two Toes I said, Go Army! Though my cousin was a Marine, so much respect. I am over near the coast in Sonoma County, but my father made sure to take me to the Gold Country when I was growing up. I am going to get my butt back into hiking shape so I can go out and find me some gold in his memory. Each pit is different and there are different gravels to check out but one thing is look for the red dirt. I like that idea about lidar might have to try to do that !!!

no there are plenty on National forest land also and you could get permission to work private lands from the land owner also or file a Claim or join a club

Do the research before you dig. A valid mining claim gives the owner the exclusive right to remove valuable minerals from that public land. Anyone can hike. camp, picnic, fish or swim on that land. However, only the claim owner, or someone who has the claim owner’s permission, can remove gold from that land. Remember, it’s not nice to high grade
