@RobCalhounPGH3 жыл бұрын
Not what you think of running 75mph now. It was mostly 2 lanes. The interstate system was built, but nowhere near what it is today. Look at the run in the movie. It was mostly on "back roads." Those were the main roads then.

@@RobCalhounPGH some parts of the freeway have 2 lanes.

@@Seriona1 By two lane, I mean 1 lane in each direction. Not graded or straightened out so you have hills, bends, and intersections. These roads went directly through towns, not bypassing them. Trucking was entirely different then.

But the actual distance is 1260 miles. They could make that easily! Driving a normal speed and even stopping for breaks! Lol
@Setebos6 жыл бұрын
I'm more interested in the second bet. Atlanta to Boston and back in 18 hours. That's a total distance of 2148 miles which, at 18 hours, means a minimum maintained speed of, say, 120 mph (and that means no bathroom breaks, refueling, etc.).
@Michael_Shoemaker6 жыл бұрын
120mph in 1977? In a Trans Am? Or that red Cadillac?
@Setebos6 жыл бұрын
Okay, we might be talking apples and oranges here. But I grant you the point. I'm going to say the red Cadillac because that's what they drove off in.
@sce2aux4646 жыл бұрын
The bet was to go to Boston to bring back "some" clam chowder. Now, at most, all they would have to do is drive to Atlanta - Hartsfield, hop on a plane, rent a rig, load it up, and hit the road. But even if they did that, they still would have anywhere from 10-14 hours to make the 1074 miles - which is still cutting it close. Hopefully "some" was just a couple of servings.

1800 miles in 28 hours = 64.29 mph average speed. I can't recall the size of those diesel tanks on a '78 Peterbilt but they couldn't have allowed more than 500 miles without refueling. Okay they're already filled up at the start so the first tank fillup isnt part of the race. That means the need fillups at: 500 1000 and 1500 miles. Approximately a half hour each then back on the road. So we deduct 1.5 hrs from 28. Instead now we 26.5 ÷ 18 = 67.92 mph. That's doable if all or mostly all are highway miles. Except in 1977 the national speed limit was 55 mph.
@13thvarebel162 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you did these calculations lol... I figured, roughly, it must be mathematically doable, but as you said the only X factor would be the continuos speeding without getting pinched by state troopers. That was no doubt where the Bandit running block in a speedy car came in! Although the hijinks of the movie were fantastical, it's cool to learn that in theory what they pulled off would be possible in real life!
