CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sheriff Buford (Jackie Gleason) bullies some teen car thieves stopped along the highway and receives information about the Bandit's car.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"Smokey," aka Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason), is the prospective father-in-law of unwilling bride Carrie (Sally Field). The Bandit (Burt Reynolds), a maverick racecar driver, makes an 80,000-dollar bet that he can transport a shipment of Coors beer from Texarkana, TX, to Atlanta within 28 hours. It's important to note that in 1977, it was illegal to sell the Coors brand east of the Mississippi River without a permit; if we don't note that, then the plot won't make sense at times. Already in danger of arrest from redneck lawmen like Buford T. Justice, Bandit furthers his chances at a stiff jail term when he offers a ride to Carrie, who hopes to escape her unwanted wedding to Justice's boy. The rest of the film is one long chase; not quite as subtle as a Road Runner/Coyote cartoon, not quite as restrained as a Three Stooges comedy. Universally panned by critics upon its first release, Smokey and the Bandit reportedly pulled in just under $126 million and led to two sequels.

Cast: David Donovan, Jackie Gleason, Scott Thomson

Gleason's body language and approach and his walk are priceless. I don't know if this can be taught in any acting school. Every movement from getting out of the car to the end was like poetry in motion. Rumor has it that he ad-libbed the whole movie. I could watch this over and over again.

I'm sure Mr. Gleason will probably be the most remembered as Ralph Kramden. But this is a strong contender for his 2nd place spot. One great thing about this first film (that was lost in the 2nd) was that despite his role as the antagonist, we were allowed in the first film a chance to cheer for him now and then. (This scene being one of them obviously.)

Excellent! Love hearing that! I was 10 when this movie came out and didn't get to see it until several years later when it came out on HBO, back in the day when we only had about 15 channels and dials on the "big screen" 25-inch tube TVs, heh. Glad you like it kid. The 70s and 80s in movies and TV in general were great to grow up in (let alone the music), so I'm sorry you missed out! But thankfully you can appreciate the good stuff and not the crap we are dealt with today.
