I come back to this song every now and then. Jerry and my dad grew up together. When my dad passed away, Jerry came to the funeral and played and sang Amazing Grace. After the funeral, we spent a good bit of time with me just listening to him talk about the kinds of things he and my dad got up to when they were younger.

This movie is definitely in my top ten. In 1983, when I was aged 11, my parents took me on holiday to the States. I had grown up on this movie and was obsessed with American muscle cars and trucks. One morning, when we were leaving the hotel, I came across a black Trans Am complete with gold eagle on the bonnet. I can still remember the feeling to this day. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

In the Hal Needham documentary, he said they were given six Pontiac Trans Ams by GM, they dressed them up identical (auto trans, black leather, T-top) and pulled the 6.6L out completely, and swapped in Chevy 427 crate motors making over 500hp. The color scheme was crated for the 76 T/A and it was inspired by the John Player Special Formula 1 car which is why it was black and gold as it was. They wrecked all but one car beyond salvage, and that one needed it's frame aligned and that was the one that was auctioned. Many of the stunts were driven by Buddy Joe Hooker, who was the inspiration for the character of Hooper that Burt went on to play.

That's mostly correct, but the interior was vinyl, not leather. There wouldn't be a leather interior in a 2nd generation Trans Am until 1979 with the 10th Anniversary model (and that was the only model in the 2nd generation with a leather interior). They were indeed 1976 Black Special Edition (RPO code Y82) models, but had the front ends updated to 1977 and the graphics changed so that they would look up to date when the movie came out. 1976 models had the engine call out on the scoop in cubic inches and 1977 had it in liters. The fact that shots show the scoop reading "6.6 LITRE" meant that originally left the Norwood, OH GMAD facility where they were built fitted with the 180 HP of the Pontiac 400 or the Oldsmobile 403. Only the W72 high output version of the 400 for 1977 to 1979 had "T/A 6.6" on the scoop.

You could not I think have have had a better crew for this movie. That said I still chuckle when I hear that quiet, insane cackle of Burt Renolds.
