I started the episode off fully expecting to work on Little by Little, my 1979 Peterbilt project however while cleaning up the shop I realized I neglected to put in the metal sleeves in the lower control arms on the QA1 suspension upgrade I put in last week. Luckily it wasn’t too big of an issue to put them in to reset and since I was already working on BANONE I figured I’d go ahead and remove the back differential. Thank goodness for the Vevor jack, the wildfire lift, kroil penetrant and a lot of persistence…
If you’re curious about upgrading the suspension on your car or truck, go check out what they have for your specific ride at: www.qa1.net/

I have a bit of catching up to do on your videos. I haven't watched the last three yet. Came over to Ireland from England early March to help my sister find a new car, then our Mum (Mom) had a heart attack and ended up in Coronary Care. Then they discovered she'd also fractured a hip. And now she has a chest infection and is on on IV antibiotics. Still in hospital, she's been in since Easter Saturday, but she's still alive so far. Promise I'll watch them all once the current stress is over. Keep on trucking.

It's better to unbolt both front and rear shackles of the leaf springs while securely supporting the differential in place. It's easier to knock the leaf springs off of the center bolts once it's out. But you got it done! It was hard to watch you work that hard, you really earned that cold one.

Concerning differentials, what I learned while searching for the ideal traction adder for my Jeep is that if your Trans Am is gonna be a cruiser and your wife will drive it most of the time, then rebuild the stock Posi. For spirited driving for both twisties and straight lines, a Torsen-type torque-biasing diff, such as an Eaton True-Trac or a Quaife is the best, and for drag racing, go with a more rowdy lunchbox locker or a spool.

If you don’t care much about gas mileage a 3.55:1 will be a happy medium for a none overdrive trans. If you go with an overdrive, 3.73:1 or a 3.90:1 will give you much better off the line acceleration. 3.07:1 sucks!!! I have an 08 Chrysler Aspen with the 5.7 Hemi and tow package that has the OEM 3.90:1 gear ratios and it gets going real quick. I test drove a new Durango with the tow and go package and a 5.7 and it was dreadfully anemic on acceleration with its tall gears 3.08:1 I think.

Mark, and for the viewers. You misread part of my letter. I did not scratch-build the reefer unit. I think I said I didn't want to scratch-build it. I found Phillip Baker in London Ontario who 3D printed it. I'm not that talented as you think. Phil was the man. I believe he commented below, he does some awesome HO scale 3D printing. Phil did this reefer as a custom request. I show that in my 2nd posting of the trailer build. I am very humbled by all the comments on how well it turned out and I appreciate it very much! Like every body else, we can't wait for your next weeks posting Mark! Cheers🍻 Earl

Mark, I'm trying to remember. But I am pretty sure that the gear ratio I liked was the 356 ratio. Because it has good take off power, high end performance without high RPM's, plus the gears are heavier duty than anything under. Great job man. Bottom's up.

That's OK Mark we all have those moments. A couple weeks after completing the 1/25 scale Snowman I dug out the old Airwolf helicopter kit. Got to the point of putting the interior together with the two fuselage halves and after multiple " build a model, it's relaxing they said " moments finally got them together and the instrument panel and copilot seats worked free and started rattling around inside. Quickly and carefully pry the fuselage halves apart before the glue set and retrieved the panel and seat and set about getting things set again. Combination of super glue and 5 minute epoxy got the panel and halves back together and walk away for some lunch. Come back refreshed and check to make sure the clamps are holding, pick up Airwolf and noticed the copilot seat sitting on the workbench. Nice job on that model and see Corey is a fellow OCD detail nerd when it comes to building and that front axle is a notorious weak spot on that kit and was one of the first uses of 5 minute epoxy in my build. The kit came out in 74 75ish as the Movin On Kenworth and I'll just put it this way there was a lot of issues the cotton candy gauze of childhood nostalgia covered over with that kit.

If you go with a th700 or 4L60, go with a 3.42 rear gear, 4L80, go 3.73. The 4L60 has a 3.06 low gear and with big block torque, it'll work great with the 3.42. I have a 76 c-15 gmc I swapped in a fuel injected LT-1 350 and 4L60E trans, the truck has 3.73's with 28" tall tires. It IS a burn out machine with this setup but, it's slow to gain speed. It revs to the moon but doesn't gain mph so when I can swap in a 3.42, it should gain mph faster at any given rpm. And a 3.42 should help calm the wheel spin down. And if you're running a big block, there will be plenty of wheel spin! 😅

3.73 + .69 OD (700R4) + 28" tires puts your rpms around 2100 @70mph. Very good imo. 3.55 will get you closer to the magical 2000rpm. BTW I love the Haynes Kelsey c3 slots on the T/A. Yea, I know that's incorrect lol just saying.

Bummer man bummer clip 😂. All good. Them coil booster shocks are because the rear was sagging in the past new springs would cure that or 4 link coil overs.

Those bushing sleeves will greatly enhance the handling characteristics of Bandit 1 in the end. Good call on the rework! Rear end ratios can be a dilemma with a three speed auto. The 3.07 would be best all around especially at highway speeds with no converter lockup as long as you keep the cam in the engine on the mild side. If you went with a 700R4 or 4L60 trans then 3.55's would be good. They also have lower first ratios that would give you better off the line performance.

I have a 1976 Malibu Classic that originally had a 305 engine with the turbo 350 transmission and a 2.56 open diff rear-end. It now has a 1994 TBI 454 with the first gen electronic overdrive 4 speed (basically a 700R4 with electronics in it) It runs a cruises fine with that 2.56 rear gear set up with the end result of a lower RPM fuel mileage wise As for your choice for a transmission I would go with the overdrive (4 speed), 3.07 rear end would be fine but 3.73 would be better A 3.62 would be just fine too for the in-between ratios of the two there A better choice also is find a used rear end for cheap and those are everywhere and some have a posi setup in them. Looks like it also had a drum to disc conversion done on it. I dont see too many cars of that year with factory disc's on the rear Those models of the car and truck are awesome to look at

Hey Mark check out a "gear vendor". You can put it behind that 3 speed and it'll give overdrive and is rated for like 1200ft/lbs of torque

Hey Mark not sure if you car has it, but I've seen guys find their build sheet underneath the backseat. I guess Pontiac put them under there as the cars came off the line! Just figured id share, Thanks for another great video!

Throw that rear in the dump or sell to someone. Those C-clip, crush sleeve, 10 bolts are junk. Plus, it's probably bent. Buy an entire 12 bolt, or 9" from Moser, or Strange. If you use overdrive get a 3.55 gear. It's not cheap, but it won't wreck your car, or kill you. Great models!

First. Dang nice model "Earl." Very nice. Second, Mark, a truck build is NEVER done. Never. Third, Wondered iffin you were gonna admit defeat and replace them springs. Yer adding horsepower, them ancient springs would have snapped on Mrs Twinsticks first all smoke burnout. Fourth, go with an updated transmission. Snowman will haul bass, don't wanna have to keep stopping to wait for her to catch up. And, the overdrive will be nice on the road. Besides, iffing she stomps on it hard enough, it'll do the double downshift, and pull smoke at road speed. Go with the 3.73's, and the locker you got now. Remember though, when pulling into the truck shows, she needs to be completely sideways and you ten feet off her bumper to make it look right. And still doing a solid 20 mph! Jakes a'screamin'! Another idea. BUild a false wall in the trailer, and stack Coors boxed to the roof. You can nail/glue/fasten the boxes (emptied) to th wall for safety when DOT/MT pull you aside. Well, maybe one or two loose ones for effect.
