The disappointing thing about Tanacon is that if she had put even the smallest amount of effort and planning in, it could have been amazing. If she hadn't tweeted that just anyone could show up for free. If she had stuck with selling the $65 tickets, or even bump up the price to $100 and capping it at the amount that the hotel could accommodate, so many issues could have been avoided. Hire a couple of food trucks to set up shop inside, have creators sell merch at discounted prices just for the event goers. It could have been amazing and she totally flubbed it.

All that would've required *gasp* actual planning over longer than a few weeks, though.

Around the time this all went down I saw a comment somewhere online where someone said she should have just made her birthday party into an event, like, charge a couple hundred bucks or so per ticket, cap the ticket number off at somewhere around 300, and then throw it at a cool club somewhere near Anaheim, that way people can meet some of their favorite creators who are friends of Tana and would be attending, there’s stuff to do cuz it’s a party, and Tana can have it centered around her like she obviously wanted. IMO that’s a genius idea, and if Tana had done that instead I’m sure that it would have been a massive hit and everyone would have respected her a bit more, not less like what did happen.

I remember what horrified me most at the time was the way that the event was about 5 minutes from a crush. A “crush” is exactly what it sounds like-a stampede in which people are crushed. The footage of people pressed up against the barriers makes my heart drop. They are so so so so lucky nobody was killed.
@eragonarya2253 жыл бұрын

@user-hb7rd9wu2n3 жыл бұрын
I’ve been at an event where the crowd tried to instigate a crush, literally terrifying. We had been standing in line for hours at an event that had max capacity of maybe 300 people, but easily had over 1000 guests. After standing outside for 2 hours (we had gotten there earlier than most, I would find out later that some people who queued later in the day waited up to 5 hours), my friends and I had finally got to the only checkpoint to enter the building. I was only 14 or 15 at the time and I was small, as soon as the first wave of people tried to push through, I was literally lifted off my feet with my arms pinned against my sides, when the crowd pulled back for a second before pushing again, I lost my balance and almost fell underneath the feet of the people in front of me, I honestly believed I would be trampled to death in that second, because there wasn’t even room for people to move out of the way if I did fall. I remember that I couldn’t even breathe because of the amount of people and the lack of space. I don’t remember how the organizers were able to calm down the crowd, however they let me and my friends in soon after that. The event was really fun but yea literally 0/10 don’t recommend human crushes

What got me about Shane’s “documentary” was where tana was really trying to push the narrative that she was working hard on everything so she would be expelled of any responsibility of things ending up how they did, and then shane just shows footage of her asking basic questions and that was supposedly proof of her overseeing the event and he was acting so shocked, like he was really pushing for tana to come out good in that whole situation

I went to Tanacon, cause I had planned to go to Vidcon, but I had to refund my ticket so I could pay for a new pair of glasses. I was really upset cause I had always wanted to go to Vidcon, so when Tana announced Tanacon, I was really excited. At least I wouldn't be out the money for my flight, and I could still go on vacation and have a good time. By the time I finally, finally got to the front of the line, that's when literally everybody started just shoving their way into the hotel, no longer caring about the line. It was really dangerous. Even a random girl I had been standing next to in line commented on how dangerous she felt the whole thing was, and how that was upsetting because Tana had promised that safety would be her biggest priority. The girl only went because Tana promised it would be safe. So as I was leaving, these two guys in a car pull up and ask, "Is this event free?" I say, "I had to buy a ticket." And he responds, "But is it free?" I'm so pissed off that I just ignore him and walk away. Right then, as I had decided to just give up and leave, the police showed up. I literally got out in the nick of time. My family was berating me for even going in the first place because this was a new event, and it was sketch from the beginning. But, honestly, while I do see their point and in many ways agree, I don't accept that the blame be placed on me. I was a consumer who was promised an event and gifts of a certain value that did not receive what was promised, and I - in addition to everyone else - was put in danger, both by the location being in the sun for hours without refreshments, and by the sheer mass of the crowd without proper security measures. Going to Tanacon actually, ironically, was the event that gave my mother and I the close relationship we have now. Cause when she warned me, I essentially told her that I need to make my own mistakes in life, and from that she learned to respect the choices I make for myself, even if they're dumb. And at the end of the day, I got a sunburn and a story. So in a weird twist of events, I'm glad that I went. However, I hate that everyone else - especially girls much younger than me (I was 21 at the time) - were put in danger and got their money taken from them. I just remembered: we only got our money back because the ticket company wanted to prove that they, at least, were reputable. So I did get my money back. And I even emailed them back and told them, "Hey, I know because of Shane Dawnson's 'documentary' that you aren't required by law to do this, but I very much appreciate this gesture, and I will gladly let you take my money in the future." And they responded that they were happy to do this as a sign of good faith (at least that's how I remember the email in my own words). In the end, as someone who was there: Tanacon was an important event in my life trajectory, but the event itself was trash. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. lol

Shane was friends with Tana waaay before the Tanacon thing so it wasn't strange that he was biased towards her in his faux "documentary". He even had her on his podcast when that was a thing and, looking back at it, it was very bizarre and inappropriate, especially since he kept asking her if she was underage or not after asking a sexual question (and she was underage fyi).

Just american stuff: "Someone could've gone in there with a weapon and hurt a whole lot of people" 24:59 Like I find it so disturbing that it has gotten to a point where every event in america is a potential shooting and that americans accepts that as a common possibilty but that might just be us europeans who are weird like that

@dyobun3 жыл бұрын
It’s NOT just “American stuff.” I agree it’s sad that our world is like this, but did you do some research? Mass killings and terrorist related attacks happen at high rates in Europe too... In some countries like Norway and France, the shootings occur at a higher rate. It’s simply a statistical misconception and false reporting that folks claim the USA has the most shootings globally, when in reality you must take into account the ratio of attacks vs. population and how it stacks up with other countries. It’s no DOUBT that a country with a much higher population will have technically higher occurrences of just about anything, but the percent/rate is another matter. For example, if a country has a population of 100,000 and has 10 mass shootings, vs a country with a population of 10,000 with 5 mass shootings, the smaller country has a higher rate of shootings per capita-even if it technically had 5 less shootings, the rate at which it occurs is more often than the country with the higher population. I don’t mean this response to be disrespectful as I realize your point is to be sad about the fact we have to worry about this horrific stuff, but to claim that this is “just American stuff” and that we’ve accepted it, is false. It’s “world” stuff.

Actually, Mega64 is a KZbin channel that has a small scale convention every year! What’s incredibly funny is that they’ve actually had their convention, Game Days, at the exact hotel that they hosted TanaCon 😅 it goes off without a hitch every year! I went once in 2017 and it was so much fun - they have a second day event that’s optional where convention attendees can all meet up at Disneyland the next day and the guys from Mega64 are there too! Attendees all go on rides and have mini meetups/group ups through out the day with the guys from the channel and it’s pretty much always a really good time (from what I’ve heard since I’ve only gone once!) Mega64 is definitely a smaller channel than Tana and others who might want to do a small convention like this, but it’s totally something that’s been done and done well!

Here’s the deal about massive organized events: sure they may seem like they “sold out” and the costs seem inflated, but the “unorganized events” have a more risk associated. A ton of that inflated cost is security and insurance. I’m part of the Burner community and have seen local burn events go from 250 people to 10,000 in less than 3 years. The permits, security, insurance, medical supplies on site etc etc, it friggin adds up and keeps fatalities at a minimum- which given Burners are almost always high on SOMETHING (usually party drugs), the fact that fatalities are not higher is pretty amazing
@one_smol_duck3 жыл бұрын
I've always felt that the most manipulative thing about Shane's documentary was his ability to change the narrative from "thousands of Shane's young fans came to a poorly planned and dangerous convention that he never even showed up to" to "Shane did an exposé piece on the whole situation and his only flaw was being too eMpAtHeTiC toward his friend." I'm glad people finally saw through his bs because I stg he's the most adept person on earth at manipulating the internet to save his own image.

@elllana3 жыл бұрын
I think you should definitely talk about Tati again in the context of her return. There’s currently a lot of support and sympathy for her and while I feel like some of it is warranted, many people have pointed out how she hasn’t really apologized for doubling down and then going back on James Charles, hasn’t apologized for associating with and defending a known racist and just in general how she manipulates situations to make herself the victim. She’s very good at changing the public’s opinion on her and uses the fact that the internet’s memory is very short to her advantage, and it would be interesting to explore that.
