Something about Haley Pham is so interesting to me. She's like the embodiment of what happens when your childhood ends too soon. I think people sometimes forget that she's been the main source of income for her family since she was a literal child, and she's been financially supporting her mom since her parents got divorced. She takes a lot of pride in the fact that she was able to do so, but she's acknowledged that she feels a lot of pressure to make money to support her mom. I see someone who took on this "breadwinner" position too soon and lost a lot of her childhood. She didn't have normal teenage years where she could just fuck around and do whatever; everything she did had to make money. She lost a lot of freedom and I think it shows now that she's an adult because you can tell she's not really mature. She's very immature but is desperate to seem like an adult since she missed all those normal teen years. I think it also explains how she changes her "identity" so often because she's chasing whatever persona is going to be most profitable. She's messy, but something about her story is so fascinating to me.

I agree. The internet is free, and there are millions of credible sources out there that cover every topic imaginable, yet she makes one google search, skims the top result, and then tries to preach wrong and inaccurate information. The Greece video was a big red flag about her lack of education, and then the birth control video. It’s not hard to dedicate some time to learning about something as important as birth control and women’s health. Her “girl talk” style of video really bothered me, there was so much wrong information being spread, and younger viewers don’t tend to go out and research on their own. It wasn’t mentioned, but one of the things that lost her a lot of long time fans was dropping out of high school in December 2018. Basically, her school suspended her for filming during class or something, and she decided to just drop out completely with only one semester left. This annoyed a lot of people bc a) just a really dumb decision when you only have 5 months left b) lots of her earlier content was about studying and now she just decided to ditch all of it bc she was gaining traction online and c) she got into the same “school doesn’t matter, just hustle and you’ll be good” mindset as her bf Ryan Trahan. Ryan himself was obnoxious for this bc he’d dropped out of college due to a conflict between his business and his track involvement, and he never shut up again about how college is stupid and useless bc he was making so much money by dropping out. Like yeah college isn’t for everyone, but you already had a rising business and a growing online presence when you dropped out. It felt like he imparted that chip on his shoulder abt being a successful drop-out to Haley, when dropping out of HS is way different than dropping out of college.

As someone that grew up in a very Christian space, I think what she was saying about the STD was really lost in her poor communication. Those spaces really imbed that the only way you can avoid STDS and unwanted pregnancy is through abstinence and celibacy. So when you put so much energy and effort into trying to avoid it by doing the “right thing” it feels like a slap in the face because maybe you could have been having sex this whole time and it wouldn’t have mattered. It’s kinda like the set up in Jane the Virgin, where she put so much emotional energy in staying celibate because of the religious aspect but also so she wouldn’t end up like her mom. I don’t think she was trying to shame other people or be like a pick me girl, but that’s just my personal take. I also don’t really know anyone that participates in purity culture/strict religious adherence that doesn’t pick and choose a little (you’d go absolutely mad if you didn’t). But again personal takes just from like being the same age as her in relatively similar communities and also being veeeerrry familiar with the way my peers say dumb things like this 😂 Edit: if she made other more directly disparaging remarks about “impure woman” than that definitely is not okay/something to empathize with. I tapped out as a subscriber like two weeks before the std video, so I haven’t seen much since then.

I honestly felt quite bad for her when her parents divorced and she became the financial provider for her mum. I remember her video talking about it and was quite upsetting to witness. And then the religious thing came into it and it was just a whole other level of out of touch.

I think Haley is the biggest example of “purity culture christian who would’ve benefited from going to college and getting some real world experience” I can think of. I can’t help but wonder how differently she might’ve turned out if she wasn’t in such a religion-focused friend group/community or at least kept up friendships with people like Ashley (Bestdressed) and gotten more diverse life advice. It would’ve been so cool to see her life if she’d finished high school (or at least gotten her GED if she hasn’t), gone to college, kept up with dance (which was the BIG draw of her channel for a lot of people for a while) and shelved marriage for a (long) while. She actually seems like a really cool young human, just clouded by the views that she lives in a bubble around. I think it’s hard to stay down to earth when you’re 1. rich 2. in an echo chamber 3. dealing with the entire world’s opinions so you feel defensive, and 4. living life through pinterest boards, your bible notes, and the IG explore page. I don’t think she’s the worst of the worst by far but damn, that almost makes it more irritating because she has so much potential to be more well-rounded than she is (if that makes sense). edit: i have to clarify that i don’t hate or think haley is a bad person at all! actually the opposite. she seems sweet but honestly... just young and dumb like most 18-20 year olds are lol. she just has a platform and no one to correct her when she’s wrong. i just think that she definitely would’ve flourished if she’d given herself the space and time to slow down and experience the world in a less “confined” (so to speak) kind of branding and community. she herself expressed feeling like she was rushing her life in early-2020 before ryan proposed to her (in what feels like, to me, love-bombing and trying to lock things down even tho Haley was obviously conflicted), which is where the big chunk of my concern (?) comes from.

Yes, this is spot on. College exposes people who have not yet found themselves to so many other worldviews. And for the individuals who've accepted the beliefs they were brought up with, it really puts those beliefs to the test. I think college would have made Haley more decisive, and ultimately would have challenged her mostly christian/conservative views. Having an online following can create an echo chamber of fans that agree with you, and when they start to grow out of the views that you still hold onto, their criticisms can be hard to take.

It must be exhausting for her. The church has hurt so many people's ideas of God's love and made it seem like something you earn rather than unconditionally have. Plus it's made her seem bitter and look down upon others. I think that's exactly the reason why she should look into going to college again. Many people in the comments mentioned she would probably benefit from a degree in business or something similar and I totally agree. I mean, I get that college isn't the best for everyone but I think something other than youtube and being an influencer would really help her sort those random ideas out. (Obviously doesn't have to be business, but I think regarding how she sees herself as like a business woman it would make the most sense lmao.)

I know some people have mentioned this in the comments, but I don't think it was said in the video so I'll give my two cents on it. Not too long before Ryan and Haley got engaged, Haley was apparently having doubts about the relationship and her personal trajectory in life. (It kinda seemed like she wanted to ... hit pause lmao.) Supposedly, she actually took a "break" from the relationship, but that only lasted for a day or two. And then, bam, next thing you know Ryan's proposing to her. I don't know about y'all, but that seemed a little alarming. It's one thing to be like, "Ugh, my boyfriend and I had a tiff earlier about doing the dishes so I'm spending the night at a hotel," and a completely different thing to be like, "I'm so young and I've been in this serious, public relationship, but I don't know if this is what I really want right now or where I want to go in life currently." (Paraphrasing, of course.) So to know that she was having those pretty deep doubts about their relationship and her personal path in life and her career and then suddenly got engaged was eyebrow-raising for me. Definitely not her fault for ANYTHING of what I'm saying; there's absolutely nothing wrong with questioning your relationship OR wanting to get engaged. But I will say it was rather worrying. I'll also add this: I feel like a lot of times, Haley is the one catching the most criticism for their relationship "shenanigans" when Ryan is also part of the couple? And he's also the older (thus, presumably more mature) one in the relationship! (I'm talking about the backlash of buying a mansion so young, moving in together before getting married [which I don't see anything wrong with but a lot of deeply religious people do], and getting engaged so soon in a relationship.) I know that Ryan definitely hasn't had many scandals or controversies on his own compared to Haley, but when it comes to their relationship, Ryan is still pretty young but he's also mature enough to "know better" about certain things. So why doesn't anyone ever criticize him as well? I'm not saying he DESERVES to be picked on like Haley is, but it does seem rather odd.
@clownclouds82953 жыл бұрын

Exactly, she’s just like any teenager/ young person who goes through hobbies and phases and interests. For example you might get really into yoga for a couple of weeks because you saw it on instagram and liked the aesthetic, but then go off it after a while. She’s young and she’s trying to find out who she is just like anybody would, the only issue is that unlike a normal teenager, she has so much money that it isn’t just small hobbies and interests she picks up, it’s businesses and large expensive projects that require commitment she isn’t prepared to give. Where one 20 year old might pick up journaling for a while and eventually lose interest, Haley decides to renovate a B&B just because she has the resources to do so.

I personally don't see the problem in finding and learning new things to try out? Everyone has phases when they're obsessed over a new craft/hobby, hers are just publicized for the world to see. A lot of creators are in the rut of having to produce the same content since that's what their fanbase is built on, and eventually, lose the passion in it. Changing her hobbies and what her content is centered around, in my opinion, is perfectly natural. She's extremely young and has gained a hefty amount of money very quickly, therefore her content is a reflection of the combination of the two.

It’s obvious that she has no one in her life anymore to tell her the harsh truths and to tell her ‘no’ when she needs to hear it. When her parents got divorced, it seems like she lost the people who were supposed to take care of her and mentor her. Now, the roles are flipped and Haley takes care of her mom. Do you really think her mom is gonna disagree with Haley and tell her she shouldn’t do this or that when Haley is literally providing for her and got her a condo? Also, just going off of video content so who knows what happens in real life, but it seems like Ryan never really tells Haley ‘no’, and she is always in the right. We need to remember that Haley is really just a kid who is going through a rough patch in her life. She was thrown into a position that no one her age should have to deal with and has understandably suffered and made very poor decisions because of it.

I dropped out of university for the 2nd time just as covid hit last year, and we were separated as he had to work for his dad, I realised that although I had my own flat, I didn't know about bills, I wasn't independent at all, I wouldn't even go to the shops by myself, all of "my friends", weren't really mine at all, they were his, I hadn't learned to drive because my boyfriend could so whats the rush... I ended things not because I no longer loved him, but I realised I never got a chance to truly develop who I was as an individual, I have no social circle of my own, and although I moved out at 18, all I gained was poor mental health (Its better now) and very little experience. I think that's where my concern comes from when I see others marrying young. It's really important to develop who you are as an individual, I am happy I came to realise that, I hope others acknowledge that too.

Honestly getting married in a pandemic is so selfish. If they had to get married go to a court house. I feel like alot of her behaviour recently has been self involved, with a lack of empathy for the real world because she is so privileged? And then the house rental renovation, renting keeps the lower classes without house security and hoards wealth with the already rich. But this is a systemic issue of capitalism so not her fault but the fact she chooses to ignore people who want to educate her on the issues of being a landlord when so many people are financially struggling right now & presenting herself as a charitable person is really contradictory and sad!?
@lanaesworld69763 жыл бұрын
If you let so many of those things and complete strangers dictate your life it would be sad. But I'm sure you wouldn't live to those high standards your self ... And you would crumble under the level of scrutiny and judgement you just spoke on. I guess I'll never get why people think they can judge and dictate others lives just because there on youtube..

I got married during the pandemic. You just keep it small. I also was a landlord to low income people in our area. You have to renovations to keep the house well maintained. She may be renting it now but one day she might want to sell it, but she can’t do that if there are no updates, especially in her area.
@hiddentruebeauty3 жыл бұрын
@@lisan3460 the point is she doesn't need the money and she can renovate after the pandemic. maintaining a home for safety is totally different then renovations. the renovations are not a necessity and 100% could have waited. weddings can wait. go the courthouse. having a few people at your wedding isn't worth potentially robbing someone of their life. minimize your interaction with other people. unless either of you are terminal or someone at the wedding was terminal, you could have also waited. if you have the vaccine then that's a whole other scenario, but you didn't mention that. you saying that you've done similar things to her doesn't make what she did anymore justifiable. it just makes you look equally as self involved, weddings aren't a necessity nor are home renovations. people are literally DEAD.

@@lanaesworld6976 what's hard about not having a wedding in a global pandemic and not doing home improvements given the record unemployment and eviction/foreclosure rates? who's moving in a time like this?? unless 100% necessity as a result of incidents around the pandemic. an easy google search would tell you people on average are downsizing, not moving into newly renovated homes with teen landlords.

I’m the same age as haley and i think the main thing that bothers me about her is her lack of self awareness and how mature she tries to present herself as. She wants to seem so much older than she actually is which is why I think she’s doing all these things like getting married, starting businesses, renovating houses, but at the end of the day she doesn’t have the actual level of maturity to match the way she tries to come off and so it just seems slightly embarrassing. Her and Ryan are so young at the end of the day and nobody expects them to be engaging on these business ventures so it just gives the impression of when a small child puts their mum’s heels on and pretends to be all grown up. I know me and my boyfriend certainly don’t have the mindset or capability to be doing any of the things her and ryan are doing and neither do they, the only difference is that they have money and they have an audience. I think she so desperately wants to be seen as a mature adult when at the end of the day, she just isn’t there yet.

I witnessed a sudden shift in Ryan's content when he started dating Haley. I tapped out because it started to revolve around her. The infatuation stage was really off-putting because I'd been watching this bright young guy, full of ideas, evolve independently and then it just dwindled. All the sudden almost everything was about or involved Haley. I think there is something to be said about two teens coming together at times in their lives when it would be beneficial to go at it alone and discover who they are individually. People really underestimate the power of friendship, which is a major building block in any relationship. Everything does not have to start off romantically. As you mentioned there were several times when Haley's content pivoted and even more so now. We see her trying on so many different costumes, identities, and ventures because she doesn't know who she is and there's nothing wrong with that. Eventually, hopefully she'll stumble upon herself. However, she's trapped herself in this world of "I'm supposed to be this." "I'm suppose to do that." "I want to be like that." And I think her relationship with Ryan enforces these expectations. Seems like there is no breathing room for the both of them. I hope that they both find themselves and I hope Haley gets the world experience/life experience and education she needs to become a well-rounded person. Also she could use a long break. Live your life offline, sit with yourself for a while.

I feel so conflicted about Haley, mostly because I'm worried about her. I started watching her when she was doing the Plan with Pham style videos and really enjoyed all of her content. I stopped watching her content for no particular reason in the beginning of 2019 and then the whole Greece thing happened and everything seems like a mess, specially her. Since she's supporting her mom and didn't go to college, I feel like she thinks she needs to keep this career going at all costs, but her content revolved around her life when she was 16, so now she has no idea of what to post. She tries to grab her old audience, but shes not 16 in her room making videos about dance anymore. She tries to grab a new audience, but doesn't know how to appeal to it when half of the internet just sees her as a spoiled child. In reality, I think she's completely lost, nobody takes her seriously and has nobody to guide her. She's trying to fix all of that in front of an audience that will criticise her every move and she needs to please that audiece while also having no idea how to do it. When you pair this with the fact that she's a huge prefectionist, you get what's happening now: a flip flop between ideas that she either doesn't fully love, her audience doesn't love or both. I feel like the only way to fix this right now is taking some time off to go to therapy, find herself, work through trauma that she has accumulated over these years and find what she trully wants to do with her channel and herself. Trying to figure herself out on camera is not going well and I really hope she finds her niche and her passion for youtube again.

Yeah that’d be cool, she was the first KZbinr I ever watched and I remember her collaborating with Aeropostale! I don’t know if she’s still doing KZbin now but she’s in a relationship with a guy from so you think you can dance and if I’m not mistaken I think they’re engaged?

She was one of the first influencers to hit mainstream success. Either her huge aeropostle line with billboards in Times Square, and then being in the finals of Dancing with the Stars

My younger brother has a friend that sounds like she's being influenced in all the wrong ways by someone like Haley. She's obsessed with "building an empire" but when asked wtf that means, she doesn't have an answer. She quotes herself on her social media like she's a wise philosopher but is really just 20 and newly wed lol

i'm so confused about who her content is for? it's kind of unrelatable even to me, a 23 year old--i couldn't imagine being 16 and watching this.
@angellove18723 жыл бұрын
As a teen myself, I'm not quite sure what her age demographic is exactly. It seems like she just hops around with content and random people just follow along for a bit and then they just leave? I feel like this confusion really showcases her as a person though and the decisions she has made because there seems to be people of all age groups-ish that are somehow still more mature than her if that makes sense

I’m the same age as her, I liked for a bit but then I would go on and off because her content kind of fluctuates. It seems like she’s going through an identity crisis and after all of her scandals it’s hard to watch her.

To go on when you talked around 28 mins, it’s like when Adelaine Morin was talking about “losing a lot of money” from the big bear trip and also in the same trip saying she bought a “cheap” 500 dollar hot tub.....

I don't understand how she promotes purity culture but goes on vacation with him and lives with him. Like sis really ??? In very conservative churches/religions that's not allowed and church officials can refuse to marry you on church grounds. So she is super unrealistic like im supposed to believe that he sleeps in the other room? When literally she has shown they totally sleep in the same room.

It’s so jarring when people say “oh back in 2016” because for me the year Trump was elected was the first time I got actively involved in an election and it just seems so fresh and traumatizing for me that it feels like I have had four 2016s in a row.

I was pretty forgiving for Haley Pham for a while.. but after she bought the house with Ryan and began living there it was just an odd shift into this new lifestyle she had. I didn’t feel like as a viewer I was still her friend she was sharing things with. I feel like the only person I watched for so long who stayed that way was Jenna Marbles who I always felt was just speaking to her audience almost like a friend.
