it's actually a super common practice...just less well known maybe in spaces like the beauty industry. A more common example is when you go to a doctor's office, or a car dealership, or somewhere innocuous and they hand you a pen/toothbrush/water bottle/etc. and it has their logo/name/whatever on it. That item is a private label item. It's an existing product that you can change the name/label on and sell it. It's a very common marketing tool. The literal only reason I know what this term means is because I work at a company that does private labeling and I learned it when I started working there.

Morphe should be prosecuted for some of their actions. Lying about ingredients is illegal in most countries. They could also be sued for negligence with customer safety. Influencers could get damaged reputations as a result of collab formulas being tempered with, and may have grounds to sue.

my main guess as to why morphe was so hard to find info on is that they are being run in part by people who work in business for a living, compared to most influencer owned/run brands who broadcast their thoughts and opinions freely and tie their image to the brand directly (this applies to instagram based brands), main stream brands on the other hand know what info to hide and how to be incredible shady within the bounds of the law and out of public sight.

I used to work for an independent makeup company who sold eyeshadows that were 100% identical to Morphes. They were private labelled. I never had an issue with that, I had an issue with influencers marketing them as a unique and exclusive brand which was untrue. Whether or not the influencers knew about the private labelling, the brand never corrected any of them and all of their codes were vehemently pushed. I was shocked when I saw 'Morphe' palettes were being sold at the shop I worked at and my boss informed me that they were private labelled. It was like a slap in the face from Morphe/the influencers that kept saying that the formula is amazing and like no other..

Yes!! I bought it years ago when it first came out and could have sworn it was like $8 bucks, one of the reasons why I even tried it because it was cheap enough that if I didn’t like it I could give it away or throw it out without feeling why I wasted money. Well I saw it again recently and saw it was close to $20, I couldn’t believe it was so much. I then went online to check out the pricings of their products because I used to buy a ton of Morphe back in the day for myself and my 2 teen daughters. I couldn’t believe how expensive the products were/had become, especially how much the price jumped in just a year or 2. I’m talking like a brush being $5-7 to now $15 plus, it was crazy to me, and at that point you might as well just spend your money on good quality brushes that won’t shed, break, not last long, like Morphe brushes do. At the prices their at now I just don’t see any reason to buy from them, wet n Wild is super inexpensive, they’ve done a lot to make their products better yet still have kept the pricing low. Morphe got a big head from all these KZbinr fans buying their products that now they think they can triple the prices and no ones gonna notice, yet the product is still crap.

Like you were saying: the “beauty community” is a small fraction of the actual beauty consumer market. Affiliate codes still aren’t mainstream knowledge, especially amongst very young and much older generations. I just explained what they are to my mom a few days ago, and she was shocked to realize all the interior design/home décor KZbinrs she watched were making money off their linked “suggestions”. It made her immediately question how truthful they were being about the quality. It’s sneaky. I’ve seen very few KZbinrs actually explain what those codes mean to their audiences in every video in which they’re used, and I think it’s wrong to assume just any average viewer will know what those codes mean for the person pushing them.

@@soundwave.superior from my understanding, most brands start out by drop shipping items from places like AliExpress and adding their own label to them. Once the brand grows, they can seek out their own manufacturer (for makeup it would be finding a lab) versus using a supplier where they are premade. This is a small thing but thanks for saying “hypothesis” instead of “theory” (this is around the 43:35 mark when you’re talking about Morphe trying to be an umbrella company for influencer brands) As a scientist, it annoys me that there’s a disconnect behind the meaning of the word “theory” between the scientific community vs the general population. The general population tends to think that “theory” means that it’s an educated guess, while in science “theory” actually means an explanation/answer to a question that is backed up by substantial evidence through the scientific method and independent studies. In the science community, “hypothesis” is the word that’s used for an educated guess. I noticed with the pandemic that a lot of people have misunderstood this difference (I’ve seen some people doubt The Germ Theory stating that theory means an educated guess 🙄) so I just wanted to say thanks!

I agree I was taught that a theory can be still challenged but it is not a hypothesis and it is more closer to a law in many instances than closer to that of a hypothesis. I do believe though that language changes and that there seems to be a difference between colloquial use of a word and literal meaning, as a poli sci student this happens all the time due to practices and principles of various political theories existing at the same time. Sometimes words seem to take on a new meaning

The first half of this video took me to another time😭 I still remember buying the 350 & other pallets & brushes because of how hyped up they were. Crazy how much has changed and happened since then!

I remember Morphe coming out. I feel like Sigma was already doing the influencer marketing but got pushed out by morphe

Exactly.... at first all I remember Jaclyn Hill, MakeupbyTiffany, xteener, Marlena and Nicole Guerrero would only talk about Sigma brushes.... then like it felt like in an instant that Jaclyn would only talk about Morphe.... and only Morphe... I always thought that was weird

A lot of influencers I follow use Sigma brushes or Mac ones. It's just that they are pricey compared to Morphe. Morphe also does lots of sponsorship I think and stuff with influencers and they're cheaper so some tend to promote Morphe brushes instead

Morphe’s pricing is so weird to me. Their eyeshadow palettes are ~$25 (the 35C and the 35xo) with tons of shades, but stuff like their setting spray and bronzer are close to $20 each. Like what?

KICKS, the biggest “department store” beauty retailer in Norway, just announced that they will start carrying Morphe and I was high key disappointed and see this as a laps in judgement from KICKS. Morphe has seemed shady to me for a long time.

Honestly I still use what I have already, I dont like throwing makeup away. But the shady issues with Morphe make me not wanting to buy anything from them anymore... and the quality of other (indie) brands, certainly nowadays, is so much better tbf 🤷🏻‍♀️💯

I thought it was a weird decision by Kicks, I feel like morphe is cheaper than their vibe. Morphe would be better suited at Vita, I think (even though Morphe isn’t cheap in our currency...). Why can’t they spend time getting Fenty here?

Yeah mecca in australia which sells hourglass and by terry has also started selling morphe which cheapens their brand in my opinion. Money is king though

Back in 2015ish, I was in Cosmetology school and I went to the Bronner Brothers hair show in Atlanta. Though this was mostly a “hair” show selling hair products, there were a few booths that sold makeup. This was my first time ever seeing Morphe. And it was a dual booth with...CROWN! Half the booth was Morphe, half was Crown. That was where I first purchased the Morphe 35O palette and the brushes were all the same on both sides of the booth. The hair, the feral, the handle and the numbers (even with the C on them before the numbers) but the Crown brushes were a dollar cheaper than all of the Morphe ones. So i bought several eye shadow palettes from Morphe but all brushes from Crown. When I got back home from the trip, Jaclyn hill posted a video debuting the 35O palette and it was sold out within the week. I was so happy I bought it, but looking back...wow lol

I'd be so pissed and I'm not even vegan/vegetarian/cruelty free. It's not okay to mess with people's beliefs/morals like that - would you intentionally give a vegan friend a non vegan sandwich and tell them it's vegan? That is just vile. And that's basically what morphe did just worse.
