Shayne is very good at the "Yes, and..." portion of improv, so he always finds a way to boost other people bits. He also seems like an extremely positive person to work with, and does not try to dominate anything he is in. So yeah, the culture he helps create with their improv is extremely valuable. I feel the same way about some of the SNL cast that get less praise than I think they deserve. People like Kate McKinnon are funny, but the ones who consistently did fantastic straight-men for the other people to play off of are usually the people I think are most valuable for the show. So I think the biggest loss the show has had recently was Cecily Strong. (Sketch is pretty different in structure than improv, but I think the comparison is apt.)

I think Shayne hit it on the head in response to the backbone assumption. Everyone jokes that he's Smosh at 99% strength, but all his best bits are funny because it plays to the room. Everyone's energy bounces off everyone else. Everyone creates an atmosphere that allows people like Shayne or Angela or Ian to try things. I also appreciate how Shayne immediately wanted to talk about everyone behind the scenes. I think that's the leadership Keith is talking about, never losing sight of the fact that it's not all about you.

I am normally a silent viewer, but oh my gosh I have to comment on this. During Angela‘s first response where she is saying her parents worked so much and she spent a lot of time alone, so that’s why she gets so excited around her friends and videos actually brought me to tears. I am a huge fan of Angela and this made me feel so seen because one of my favorite people to watch is going through something similar to me/went through something similar to me. I have always been told I am too loud or too much because I spent so much time alone as a kid because my parents were always working or were busy taking care of my disabled brother, and so when I was around friends I would just be loud and explode and a lot of people can be mean about it. knowing that Angela has been through similar things to me and expresses herself through theater just like I do because of a similar situation made me cry like a baby. @AammaK7 ай бұрын
I'm so glad Shayne commented on people trying to seek out information they havent put out there for people to find and admitting it making him angry. This is obviously particularly topical as of late. And there's been quite a few conversations where I've tried to explain this to people. Real people aren't TV characters; you don't theorize about them, you don't ship, you don't stan, you don't act like you have a right to have some internal headcanon about their private lives. Fictional people are scripted, there are details to point out, hidden plot points to figure out, misdirections and hints given by the writers and directers. None of that applies to real life and this fact should be made clear to everybody until we get it. This is something fan culture needs to get up to date about, we need to start being adults about these things. People are increasingly online, and nothing you put out there or share should be an excuse for anybody to claim entitlement to information about you or an opinion on your private life. It's simple human decency. Any adult should definitely point out that creep behavior when they see it, no matter if it was about a youtube personality, any other content creator, a celebrity, an artist, an adult entertainment performer, what ever. No matter how loving a fan might think their intentions are, invasive behavior stemming from unaddressed and unhealthy parasocial attachment is not excusable. With younger people, it's a matter of media literacy too. We're at an age where being able to tell apart a person from their work is vital; loving and appreciating and being excited about someone's work is awesome, and it doesn't require invasive and excessive hysterics over somebody's privacy. I cannot stress this enough, real people are not TV characters. Being public or online doesn't excuse treating someone as if a fictional person.
@mrfrogkingg7 ай бұрын
I cannot emphasise this enough as well. I am a pretty private person online too, and think extensively about what I'm putting out there. In person, I'm very talkative about my opinions and perspectives, but many people have told me how they realised that they don't know about me, they just know me as a person, which is what I think matters. I'd be beyond uncomfortable if someone found out from my friends that I have OCD, because that's something I should tell when I've assessed if the other person should know. It's even weirder to not accept it when Shayne's made it clear he's straight, and just openly accuse him of being bi, when he knows he's not. The whole 'turning pegging into more than just a stupid joke' is dumb as well.
@katie189766 ай бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree. I am a long time fan of smosh, their cast & crew, but I don't give a f about their private lives. Of course I hope they are all doing well and are happy and satisfied with their lives both on and off screen, but their personal lives are really none of my goddamn business. At the end of the day it is just a job for them, if they love what they do, then that's great, but they will have harder days as well as better days, like all of us do. I just appreciate all the work they put into this and try to be supportive and appreciative ❤

OMFG i LOVE angela for so very casually doing the one thing that is so very needed when talking about mental health. she defined what a trigger is. trigger is a word that’s used so casually and constantly that it’s lost it’s meaning to people. what she said really brings things back to reality so people can shut up about their opinions on people’s emotions and look at the facts. most people kinda laugh when they hear the word trigger and sum it up to someone being sensitive in the moment but as she said a trigger is what being you out of the current moment. i don’t need to go into the psychology in a youtube comment section but give this girl some praise. i know it seems small but that simple definition changes a lot of peoples outlook i’ve seen it myself .

I'm so glad they talked about the sibling energy and then also about the parallel between Shayne and Angela. They are so similar in how they commit and give so much effort, as well as being everyone's biggest supporter, but also their funniest critic with each of their own quick wit. Angela is quickly also becoming that 'backbone' which is admittedly a weird way to label it, but people know what that means. Really its just their natural chemistry and awareness of what will make the scene the best it can be.
@cutepiku7 ай бұрын
Eh, when you hear about how Shayne and Courtney stepped up first by a little bit when Anthony left and then really did during the Defy shutdown, I'm not sure Angela could meet that standard of "backbone" without another major shift for her to show her stuff. "Instead of asking God for things, I thank God." This was such a wonderful sentiment, Keith. As I get older, I try to tell myself to quit ruminating over the past or worrying about the future, and to instead appreciate what I have in the present. I love seeing Angela in this type of situation is really refreshing. We get to see her intelligence better than when she's in "silly mode." And nowadays he's been hilarious on camera and I can really see his returned passion for Smosh. Shayne really fits the name of the backbone of smosh. @@mowgli7_ parasocial relationships are pretty much bound to happen, its fine to feel some sort of connection to the people that you watch every day as long as you solidly understand that you are not actually friends with the people you're watching, that they're performers, and respect their professional boundaries

My favorite part about Shayne being their leader to them is the fact that he still refused to exclude the collective. It shows exactly the kind of character Keith and Angela are referring to. Angela, if you do read this by any chance, I had the same relationship with my brothers and I think we’d get along great☺️ and Keith, I’m so happy you’re doing as well as you are, your presence is always missed when you aren’t in the videos!!

Hearing Angela say how she has this "little kid" energy come out after being so separated from her brother growing up hits hard, my brother and I are 8 years apart and didn't have much of a relationship until I was in my 30s and we had more of an even playing field with our life experiences. Her getting the chance to let that little kid sibling energy out with others makes me so happy for her, I need a way to heal my inner child like that!

Shayne being someone who has been there so long and is so talented and respected by the community also being such a welcoming and collaborative person is huge for smosh. He is able to immediately establish chemistry and make new cast members seem like they've been there forever for the fans which im sure makes them feel better and makes it easier for them to let their guard down and come out of their shell. It’s so nice to hear, especially from the other cast members now that Anthony is back, how much everyone appreciates how much of the backbone Shayne has been for a long time. And not saying it in a way like “yea people only watch smosh because of shayne”, but appreciating how much of a figurehead Shayne became for smosh during Anthonys years away and how synonymous his face has become with the brand of smosh. I know for a lot of people like me who started watching smosh after Anthony had left, Shayne is as much the face of smosh as Ian is or Anthony is, and im glad hes finally starting to get other peers tell him that.

One of my favorite things about new smosh is the evelution of two best friends making skits, into what i like to think as a platform for fantastic comedic actors and artists. Seeing Ian take a older, mentor, leader, role and then Anthony also filling in, in that regard and really let these guys create some of the most consistly wholesome content ive consumed on youtube. Even when the comedy doesnt hit my taste or if i dont like someone's style of jokes it still has a layer of wholesome energy that just feels like hanging out with friends. I think thats what makes it work so well now. People will say shayne, the april first stuff, the Anthony comeback, or other things are the only thing that has made them relevant in this youtube space but i really think everyone has had their place in the creation of this awesome content. Its like playing a board game with friends or a karaoke night. Sometimes its akward and goofy but it can be so funny that you cry or have great moments that feel like you wouldve missed out on something had you not witnessed it. Youre all my favorite pizza place 👌

Hearing Keith talk about his growth as a person was really powerful. I've always seen him as such a kind, light hearted person who's willing to center and support others in sketches and improv. The way he and Shane talked about Shane being the backbone really threw that into perspective for me as well. Keith immediately jumped to support and highlight Shane's role and Shane talked about how he felt his strength is playing off the rest of the cast and I think Keith has often been one of those people who can really set someone like Shane up. But even if Shane gets the laugh, the bit wouldn't work without the setup.
