When I was a kid my parents had to budget way more than they do now and I remember one Christmas me and my siblings opened a karaoke machine (lol) and to my little kid brain that was the height of luxury. And so anyway I had ended up saying something along the lines of "I know Santa is real bc mom and dad would NEVER buy us something like this", accidentally roasting them to their faces while also allowing the Santa lie to continue for a few years longer 😂

@gilly_axolotl Same. Until my parents finally told me the truth at 10, I always defended my belief in Santa to other kids saying otherwise that my parents could never afford all the stuff Santa brought me. The thought now, at 51, of all they did to make our Christmas happy in good and bad years makes me tear up a bit.

When I was a kid, maybe around 3, she asked one of our family friends to dress up as Santa. Totally worked. Then for 5 to 6 more years following, we'd leave carrots out for the reindeer. My mom would wake up and take bites out of the carrots and leave glitter to make it look like they ate them too. So cute

-Oranges/clementines/mandarins in the toe of your stocking is a pretty common practice. I know people from all over who follow that tradition. -Polar Express is apparently a big age divider. I'm older and agree with Amanda and Shayne, the movie is weird and creepy. I prefer the sleepy, quiet book over the obnoxious movie. -"Hide the pickle" has a very different meaning 364 days of the year. So even though I know what he's talking about, I had to giggle when Shayne asked if anybody plays hide the pickle on Christmas. -Futurama has to fight Robot Santa every year and he's evil.

Well, technically Chanse isn't wrong, because Frozen was loosely based on the original Snow Queen fairytale lol. I had a book of Hans Christian Anderson stories as a kid and when I read The Snow Queen (because I had heard Frozen was nearing the end of production and I wanted to study up lol) I was just like "what is going on?" It's kind of long and complicated for a fairytale. There's all the stuff about the evil mirror, even though that isn't really the focus of the story. You can't really shorten it down like you can with other fairytales. There were a few Snow Queen movies made, though, including an animated adaptation that came out the year before Frozen did. And yet it's still not really a well-known fairytale. I used to read this book series called Whatever After (maybe the author's still writing them, idk) about two kids who get transported into a different fairytale world in each book, and they try to help the main characters of each story get to their ending. And it always plays out a little differently from how you'd expect. Anyway, I was surprised when there was a book where they got transported into The Snow Queen. One of the few times the original story got acknowledged in the media I was consuming lol

lol I’m pretty sure the “ravioli” Angela is remembering is a pierogi. They are basically polish ravioli/dumplings, with filings like potato or cheese, often served with butter and onions. (Cheese jalapeño are my favorite).and a common topping is sour cream. They are polish and very common in places like Pittsburgh where there were a lot of polish immigrants.

Regarding price of christmas tree's . . . They aren't that expensive. They take anywhere from 4 to 12 years to grow a 6 ft tree (depending on species, weather, etc etc.). Average is like 7 years to grow a tree that is typically picked. Also, if tree farms are doing it right, like 2 or 3 times a year they should be "shaping the trees". Lastly, that land isn't being used for anything else, so the trees alone have to pay for the taxes of the footprint they take up. While agriculture taxes are usually way less than residential areas, we are talking YEARS here. If you dig in AT ALL to what it actually takes, pricing wise live trees aren't that bad.

Amanda, the open present your mom gave you was probably purchased in a store. Stores can't accept returns on those types of products, so the higher end stores will open the box and show the buyer everything that's in the box and demonstrate any features before the item leaves the store. Frozen was inspired by The Snow Queen, so Chanse isn't wrong 🥰

I've never loved Chanse more than I do in this episode ❤ (Also, Amanda should totally go listen to the planet money episode "We Buy A Lot of Christmas Trees")

shayne's rant segment about christmas starting sooner and sooner each year, meanwhile in the philippines, christmas starts as early as september and halloween is just an afterthought lmao 😂

I was honestly just thinking yesterday (while watching Scrooged, maybe that’s why) that I wished Smosh had a Christmas special every year! Thank you guys! Happy holidays

Guys do you actually remember will and grace? Deborah messing is funny lol but tbh my pick for Angela’s movie would be Megan mullaly and nick offerman, they’d do the serious/seriously weird combo so well

heat miser and snow miser are a year without a santa claus where santa decides that even though he works one day a year he simply cannot deliver presents on christmas.

The 3 IN SYNC WOAH'S from Chance and Angela during the Polar Express chat is probably the hardest ive laughed in a while. Thats too good seeing you guys split like that XD Polar Express is 100% Nightmare fuel. The train conductor is the best part of that movie

To keep the costs down for Christmas, my family does a ‘not so secret’ Santa. We all pick a name and that’s the person who you have to get a gift for. We just straight up ask “what do you want” and then get it (max $50) and then the grandkids get gifts from everyone (there’s two kids, one is 13 and the other is a year old lmao)

I honestly feel Shayne on Christmas starting too early. I get burnt out by December 1st if it starts right after Halloween. It's exhausting

Being from the New Bedford area, Amanda mentioning bacalhau and sweet bread made me double take. My Avó makes bacalhau com natas for Christmas and it is the biggest hit every year!
