I unfortunately can relate to this but in the other direction, my experience was one of both extreme overbearing control and paradoxically escalating neglect. My takeaway is, at least from my own experiences that you do not want to be the last child of your parent/parents. You will be both collared like a dog and completely neglected.

I'm 1000 years old and remember when TLC was in fact "The Learning Channel." Then when I was in like junior high, they had this little fluffy show called "A Wedding Story" that would air at noon on weekdays. It was just 30 minutes of a couple prepping for their wedding and then walking down the aisle. It was kind of a hit for this little, rather obscure channel. So then they followed it up with "A Baby Story" -- same formula but with a couple preparing for and then welcoming their (usually first) child. That was a hit too. Then came "A Dating Story" -- that one was much messier and less wholesome and happy. But so much more DRA-MA! I think you can imagine for yourself how this trajectory has led to where TLC is today.

If a man would do some of that stuff with his son, he'd be the "headline-offender" for the next 2 weeks and put to jail It's really weird that "Mom is touching her daughters intime parts. Of course they both consented" Is suddenly acceptable, but when you replace "Mom" with "Dad" there will be outcry. In both cases this shouldnt just be accepted, because it raises the question on when this all started. I dont think the kid just turned 18 and suddenly wanted to do that. This probably started when the kids were young, dumb and "shapeable".

I think most people who saw this video are upset by it even with it being women…. So this was probably an unnecessary comment. We know this is disgusting regardless of the gender participating. TLC knew this was disgusting too. They just don’t care, will do anything for views, and cater to an audience who either can’t stop watching a train wreck occur or have extremely gross and predatory fetishes and get their fix with these shows.

This is called emotionally dependency. This could’ve been me it I didn’t move out when I was 17. The psychiatrist told me it I won’t move out I won’t be able to grow up and find my own identity because I had to take care of my mom and „protect her“ from the big bad world outside. She was acting like she was my best friend, always telling me stuff I shouldn’t know with 14. When I started therapy and everyone told me that the relationship between me and my mom wasn’t normal I didn’t believe them. I thought „I’m having the best relationship with my mom!“ but oh boy was I wrong.

Bruh. The most people should do with their moms is meow at each other as a greeting after getting used to owning cats, and even _that's_ a bit concerning. I speak from experience; I toned it down when she was able to understand a single meow as "peas and corn" when she asked what I wanted in my ramen one day.

I’m not a parent yet, I hope to be one someday day. I feel uniquely qualified to talk about this because my mother was the same. It does not start in adulthood. In fact, mine went back as far as I can remember. Without using words that KZbin would ban, I will say that relationships like this start out with the mom as a predator and the child growing up not knowing anything different. By the time adulthood is reached that enmeshment is so deep that the daughter may never see it without help. I know I needed help to see it

I've met Christina (she's also on the show but her and her mom's relationship is much healthier) and she said the producers asked her to take a shower with her mom and to film her mom and her husband in bed together. They said no to both of those suggestions and the next season you see another mom and daughter in the shower together. I really think this is just a matter of what these people are willing to do on camera and less about their actual relationships.

My mother is very much like these mothers. One minute she would abuse me on every single level then in the next she oils down weird things like this. It was grooming. When I was a little older, she would leave me with random men while she went to collect her fix. I feel like it was a way to make what these men would do, feel normal. I don’t have a relationship with my mother and haven’t in over a decade for these very reasons. The mother daughter duo that really makes me sick is the pair is Mary and Brittany. Ugh
