One thing I've found with the 6 month bulbs is that the actual light itself lasts for roughly another 6 months. So I have 2 fixtures. One is a UVB bulb that gives off UVB, the other is the pervious bulb just for lighting.

Just to clarify, you're recommending to keep the lights after the 6 month mark just to use for ambient light or heat? Wanted to ask because at first i thought you were saying that they're fine to keep using because "the light still turns on", but given the context of the video that seems like probably not what you meant!

The zoo I used to volunteer at in Denver has a lioness with MBD, she was kept as a private pet when she was a cub and not fed properly. She's doing great now though! Her growth is stunted but she is more athletic than anyone predicted.

I got a “ubv” light at a pet shop and the person was reassuring me that it was the right one for a bearded dragon. But it turns out it was literally just a normal light. Luckily we found out pretty soon. Never going to that pet shop again

That happens a lot. There's also the problem of the uv coil bulbs, which don't produce nearly enough uv yet are constantly sold in enclosure kits marketed for bearded dragons. They can even be damaging to dragons as well

As an exotic animal vet, I approve this message. Another helpful hint. If you purchase a UV meter you can measure your bulbs to try to sneak out a few more months. But you have to measure, otherwise you may miss when the uv part of the bulb fails.

Yes, both oxalates and phosphates react instantly with calcium to form highly insoluble compounds. That effectively makes the calcium biologically unavailable, if they're eaten together. Calcium phosphate is apatite, the mineral that forms the basis of teeth. They're pretty obviously highly resistant to dissolving except under extreme conditions. Calcium oxalate crystals are one of the most common forms of kidney stones -- again, highly insoluble. If one consumes a diet rich in oxalates, the oxalates can circulate in the body, and essentially absorb calcium from the tissues.

Yes. Agree. I hold my lizards the entire time they sunbathe which means I get burned so I need to wear tons of sunscreen, hats, etc. I have 16 lizards so it's important every member of my pets gets time outside. But scary how birds have flown overhead when they see me holding my lizards. I see any big bird overhead I scream loud, stomp my feet and make myself look huge. Everytime they fly away thinking the sweet morsel of my lizard is not that tasty with this crazed bigger animal holding them.

My little guy (panther chameleon) passed away recently due to old age, but every late spring and during summer time I used a flexarium in our garden. It’s a mesh cage basically that can be closed, but no predator can reach in. I just moved it around during the day so it’s always partially covered by shade, so the chameleon was able to avoid too much sun exposure. It worked wonders, kept my baby healthy, and I was able to leave him and do my work. :)

This was honestly difficult to watch. When I first got my Beardie, this was my biggest fear especially after she laid her first clutch of eggs. a great way to tell is to watch for yellowing on the bulb base. they tend to turn yellow over time so once you see that yellowing start, it’s definitely time to change! a great product to see if you need to change your UVB bulbs is to use a UV test/sensor card or UV emitter sensor. the cards turn purple if UV is still being emitted. the sensor emitter will cost a little more but can give you a an exact UV rating. checking once a month is a good idea, most cards can be used 500 times and are less than $10USD. using both these methods together is almost a fool proof way to make sure your animal always has proper UVB lighting.

I eventually want to get one but they seem a lot more difficult than I can work with right now, leopard geckos and a corn snake are way easier all together than just the baseline care for berdies, if I had the money I would get a blue tongue skink though, they sound a lot easier and cooler, definitely once I have the money a must have reptile for me, I'll only get a bearded dragon if I have the perfect setup and can get a cool morph I just really like learning about all reptiles, it keeps my knowledge up to date for the ones I have and the ones I want in the future and it's just interesting

Honestly, Beardies and BTS aren't too different, the main thing being some localities of BTS need higher humidity. They're also a little bigger so ofc they'll need a little more space. Really easy to care for, though! I feed my BTS grain free dog food and assorted greens/veggies and he's been doing really well.

Bearded dragon care seems overwhelming and it did take me a full year to save up for the proper enclosure and fixtures but I now know that going to expos and shopping second hand I could get a second or third bearded dragon enclosure for a lot less than I originally invested. When we bought our beardie, he only ate 2 types of lettuce and mealworms. We had to teach him to eat other insects like crickets, other vegetables, and calcium powder. He came from a store with a good reputation, the poor guy. He still looked good, but I think that's because he was so young

My beardie, Mako, is a really fortunate case of MBD. His prior owner to,d me that she gave him no lights and kept him from 8 months. He was 7 1/2 inches when I got him. His brother, Goblin, passed, but Mako is about 11-12 inches now, and can walk fine. He walks funny (Holds up his hind legs real high), and his hands are both bent wrong. Nonetheless, he is doing really well and loves to run around and jump, and I love his so much.

Such a tough subject. I'd love to see, in the future, a video on the actual requirements for keeping a bearded dragon because I know almost no casual pet owner gets told what they actually need. My brother had one when we were kids and had good UV light but it ate only gut loaded crickets. Maybe some commercial pellets. That's it. And it lived in a tank I know is too small.

As a shelter worker we do get alot of clap back from people for our "way to high" adoption standards. sadly some things can be prevented with proper care and are if occoured not reversable as diseases as MBD. Listening to what causes it I’m thinking, this is basically Rickets. While other deficiencies play into Rickets, calcium deficiency is a major one. I say this as someone with Rickets and without supplements and treatment, it cause bone softening and in severe cases, complete lose of usage of legs

A solar meter is a great investment. Yes they are costly but vet bills due to poor UVB, are even higher. We take this little guys into our care and therefore it's our responsibility to care of them correctly. To be honest the cost of my solar meter has been revamped in the past year by reusing some bulbs (the 6/12 rule isn't always accurate) and changing them when actually required. I also realized that I needed to shift things around in a couple of enclosures for better UVB coverage.

I adopted an mbd beardie and one of my treatments for him was hydrotherapy. He had his own kiddie pool outside with a bathing rock which he used to get in and out on his own. The swimming helped my little boy to regain some muscle mass in his legs. Beardies are actually surprisingly good swimmers and some can hold their breath up to 15 minutes! Of course I would never recommend letting a beardie swim unsupervised because there is always some risk of drowning especially in the beginning when they're not yet used to the water.

i had a friend who had a bearded dragon, they came and stayed at our house for about two weeks (with the dragon and it’s cage) and after learning about this it definitely had this condition, and the dragon was very neglected, i don’t even remember seeing them feed it. i think they just euthanized it themselves after they moved to their new house, not very humanly. i can list so many things they did wrong with it, just in those few weeks they were here. i wish i was more educated at the time, i probably could have helped it, poor thing. thank you Ed and Emily! i appreciate having this information.

My neighbor used to have a bearded dragon named Dundee. He was so fabulous, and I loved going out there as a kid/teen with my coffee and sitting on my neighbor’s porch or in the yard as Dundee enjoyed the light and eating the dandelions. One of my favorite memories is when my dog Brutus, the absolute most gentle Bull mastiff in the world, got to meet Dundee, and they took a 4-ish hour nap in the yard with Dundee sunning himself on Brutus’s side. For any potential Karens, my neighbor was an experienced reptile handler/rehabilitator as well as an experienced dog parent, and he and I were never more than about a foot away from the boys during their nap time.

This was very awesome information to know! I don't think I will ever need it, But it's interesting. Sad to see that they did get MBD in the first place, And that there is no treating of it. But I hope that both of them get a Great home! Or maybe already did get a great home! thank you so so much Snake Discovery for helping all those poor animals in need. I will most definitely never actually see the Facility in person because I live way too far away, not even in the USA itself, But I'm happy that you guys exist!

Animal 1Guy takes his snakes and lizards outdoors whenever it's possible - they love running around on the grass. And the neighborhood children enjoy meeting the animals, and learning not to be afraid of reptiles.

Natural uvb is so great! I have a tortoise who was attacked by a dog about a year ago and for the first 7 or 8 months afterwards she was kept inside with artificial uvb lighting but since moving her to her space outside, her shell has been able to heal much better

I didn’t know that nopales and prickly pear fruit had calcium in it. That’s cool to know. *In some places those cactus pads might be called nopales (no-pah-lez) because that’s what they’re called in Mexican cuisine. So if you’re looking for them at the store or farmers market, it’s something to be aware of. Interesting fact, prickly pear fruit are often called “tuna” or “tuna fruits” in Spanish (and it carries over to English in some places) because their deep red color is reminiscent of fresh tuna meat.

Here’s a tip for setting up tube light UVB You can use industrial strength Velcro to set it up. I know it sounds super obvious but it took me such a long time to figure out how to set up my livhts

great content, this will teach people about diseases these animals can get. you should do snakes and all the different types of animals you guys sell so people can come here for more info. (i'm always interested in learning about medical issues)

I rescued a leopard gecko who has MBD because he old owners didn’t give him the right type of food and lighting (hell there wasn’t any water in his tank) and it stunted his growth. When I first got him he didn’t want to do anything, but when he saw me giving him food and different vitamins, his weight shot up and he is doing a lot better now. His name is Jam and he is very energetic 😊
