When I was 7, I got my first pet snake after my parents made me research them for a year. They wanted me to get a baby, but I fell in love with a 4 year old 6ft adult snake who had been surrendered and neglected (she even had burn scars on her). I had her til I was 15, and she was so friendly, never bit and was a lovely girl. Adult snakes can be wonderful too if you want a pet!

@@yeehaw7061 I think they mean they either read books or articles about the animals due the their parents request if they wanted an animal when they were younger. My friend did a bunch of research and made a slide show about guinea pigs and added fun facts and how to keep them and where she was going to keep them and pay for their food/ treats/ medication (if needed) and their bedding and they saw that she was dedicated and she really did want them so they let her get some. She rescued two of them when she was 8!

Rachel Fenton It’s most likely in shed, it should be perfectly fine, you can’t really have it stop until it’s done shedding. If you have a lamp on the screen, I would affix it to a wall or something nearby, hover it over the screen lid so the snake doesn’t get too close to it.

One other thing that I believe she didn’t mention is that not all sellers guarantee live arrival. So, make sure to ask. I have run into this problem before. Almost all breeders promise their animals health, but if something was to happen during shipping and the reptile was to die, they may not want responsibility for that.

My wife and I just bought a common boa off of Morph Market. On the ad it said she was 2 years old, but when she came in the mail we discovered that she was only a year old! She also has a slight kink at the end of her tail. When we reached out to the breeder, it turned out that the breeder’s wife had just started doing all the online stuff and the dob was mistyped and the kink (which was a birth defect) wasn’t disclosed. They were so kind though and even offered to pay to swap her with a different snake, but we fell in love with the little noodle the second we pulled her out, so now we just have a quirky boa.

Just bought my second ever snake, online just like my first one and I’d had her enclosure and food ready for a month because I had planned on buying one at the NARBC Tinley show and she arrived dead. Which should not happen, but I contacted the seller immediately upon opening her and sent pictures and a video and they called me about 15 minutes later and set up a new snake to be delivered. The seller did nothing wrong, the heat packs were still warm she was well padded and she was kept indoors at the shipping facility until I came to get her. So freak things happen, but your seller should be attentive to any issues you have within reason, as long as you let them know quickly and within reasonable doubt that it wasn’t your fault it died.

Be careful when buying online everyone, there are most definitely scams out there! I just recently had an experience with a scam myself when I was attempting to purchase a beardie. When I started to get suspicious from some odd phrases he used in text, I tried having a vocal conversation. From the short interaction we had I could tell it was bad news.

I've only bought a few reptiles from Faunaclassifieds so far and every seller called me on the phone before the sales were finalized to tell me about the particular snakes/lizards I was buying (personalities and such) and to make sure I knew how to care for them. I'd be suspicious, too, if they acted sketchy.

Nope, I didn't lose a cent, thanks to my faith and intuition. He had amazing photos of the animal, and I couldn't find them on other websites, so it very well may have been a real animal, but my gut told me I was never going to see it. A few things struck me as odd: 1 The name on the advertisement, the name on his PayPal, and his supposed given name were three different names, one being a woman's. 2 He was very eager to get my money when we hadn't even set a shipping day, discussed the price, or gone over any other details. 3 He said things like, "make sure you take really good care of him", but was very unenthusiastic/not forthcoming when I asked for more information on the beardie, such as things he liked to eat/activities he enjoyed (it was a rehoming). 3 He didn't discuss the price at all with me in the beginning, and it ended up being $100 more than advertised. Then he was very quick to accept the original price when he thought I might back out. I generally only deal with reputable breeders or people I know personally, this would have been the first time I'd stepped out of that zone. I'm glad I didn't!

It’s tempting to go with the first breeder you find when you spot a hard to find animal but please please please go overboard on the research and don’t be afraid to ask questions that you may think are obvious. I bought a female dumerils boa a few weeks ago and thankfully she’s healthy and happy now but when she arrived she was cold and lethargic (heat pad wasn’t industry standard at all it looked like one of those tiny heat pads you’d put on your back for pain and the bag she was in was way too thick). If the shipping had been delayed for whatever reason I don’t think she would’ve made it. The seller had pretty good reviews on morphmarket which was surprising but he was a little short and stand offish when I asked questions and got very rude when i asked if he did payment plans. Looking back he also didn’t have a guarantee of live arrival despite being a certified morph market member with lots of sales. Follow all the tips in the video but it’s also super important to just trust your gut when buying a new animal online. If I’d known then what I know now I never would’ve bought from that guy.

As we have started this snake life, some of the online purchases have been a learning experience. Most recent was opening up a beautiful corn that had mites. Luckily I opened up and check the snake at my office and the snake was never near my collection. The breeder did issue a refund and packing slip for return. I learned from your videos to record the opening. Not for fun opening videos but for the protection of the buyer. Thank you for that info.

Never choose friends and family or the gift option when paying for anything that isn't actually one of those two things. Sellers can have their accounts blocked for trying to get you to do either. If they are worried about the 3% they can increase their S&H charge to cover it. Like them or hate them, Paypal is a business as well and being willing to scam them means you might be willing to scam others. There is the issue of chargebacks which Paypal handles pretty badly for sellers. There are alternatives that provide sellers a bit more recourse.

A word about shipping: There is an organization known as Pilots N Paws. They are an organization of private pilots who coordinate their schedules to "pony express" animals clear across the country in their own personal planes (which means they end up in the cab, not shoved into the cargo hold of an airliner.) Normally, they focus on cats and dogs, but there are a few who are willing to transport reptiles. Unfortunately, they are a 401(c) non-profit, so in order to use them, you have to adopt from a rescue. But, on the upside, the animal gets picked up at the nearest airport to the rescue, and is ultimately handed directly to you right off the plane (and because most of them land at small general aviation airports, you can be standing right next to the plane when it shuts down. No ramp agents involved.)

Figure out which species you want and be sure of which one you want before you buy. Commit to that species and do not change your mind and if you do change your mind, start all over researching the new species. Research all of the care requirements from as many sources as you can find...web, books, breeders, anyone who you know that keeps that species. Research until you know everything about that species without thinking about it. Familiarize yourself thoroughly. Aquire everything you need to house and feed. Set everything up and have it all running smoothly for at least a week. That way you can make sure everything is working well and all your temps and humidity etc are going to be maintaineable. The reptile should be the last thing you buy. Personally I would also suggest only buying from a reputable breeder at an expo. That way you can ask questions, find out if it is healthy and parasite free, weather it's a good eater, weather it's got a good attitude or not and see and handle the animal before you buy. Most of all have fun doing it all. I did.🙂

When I eventually do get a Snake and I plan to do so in the future (say 5-10 years from now.) I will without a shadow of a doubt go for Rescue / Captive Bred. Theres just too many negatives on Wild Caught to justify it for me at least.

I bought my hognose off Morph Market. The seller was very nice and ready to answer any questions we had (Ectotherm Empire). Always ask questions, great sellers will be more than ready to help you. I got my boy from a breeder who just didn't want to continue with his line, so now he's our cozy three year-old pet. Don't forget to quarantine your new babies from your collection until you know your new babies are healthy and mite-free.

It's good to see a video about this subject here. I'm usually watching videos from the 'GoHerping' channel revolving around this subject, but he uses a lot of humor and a lot of people tend to miss the point. I'm fine with not having pets and have fun watching everyone else do their thing.

I did my first morph market buy of a snake and it was a great experience. I had multiple email communication with the breeder and read reviews. I did take a chance and sent the money friends and family to the breeder ,but the breeder lives in a town only 2 hours away from me. So over night shipping only cost me $25. FedEx delivered the snake to me the next day at 8:30 in the morning.

I love your channel I have watched a bit before Rex came in, and I love how much work you put into your animals! I’m a 11 year old boy who loves herping, and my mom and dad let me have reptiles! We recently got a Mangrove snake, 3 baby female Veiled Chameleons, and an Adult California Kingsnake. We have multiple snakes, a few turtles, an iguana, and 4 lizards. I love spending time with them and just hanging out with them, and playing ROBLOX while letting my Cali King crawl all over me. You are the main reason that got me into reptiles, and me and my mom would mow the grass a lot and find these Dekay’s Brown Snakes. I also have a cute baby hognose named Snoot, and she is a wild type juvenile. She is adorable! I also have a white Snake Discovery Hoodie and am currently wearing your green hognose shirt “Drama Queen”! I love your shirts and want to by some of your snakes in the future, and would love to meet you! I hope you know that thousands of people watch you and love your show, and to all your hard work! Stay socially distanced but not distance to all your fans! I love you and your channel!

I've loved snakes since I was little. My best friend had a bloodred corn snake named Charlie and a ball python named Skeeter and we'd always handle them. I lived with my grandparents and my grandma is deathly afraid of snakes so I could never have one of my own. Fast forward to now. I'm 31 and married. My husband has always been wary of snakes. I guess he just never really had a chance to interact with them. But he's been watching your channel a lot lately and has begun hinting at the possibility of getting our own scaley child in the future. Thank you so much for all these educational and fun videos! Because of you guys, my dream of having my own snek baby will finally come true! 🐍💙

One thing I would definitely recommend is MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE WEIGHT OF THE ANIMAL!! I made the mistake of buying two beardies earlier this month and they were both badly underweight in the last 3 weeks I've beefd the female from 160 grams two 200 and the male from 200 to 220 theyre 2 years old so they should have already been well over that but they hadn't been fed well so make sure the animal you're buying is a healthy weight!

Some good info presented here! There will always be some added risk involved in buying an animal online that needs to be shipped to you. Although I have bought online before and have not had many problems - I always prefer to buy in person even if it means a long road trip to do so! No shipping company is going to take care of your animal in transit better then you will IMO.

Please do not trust buying anything from anyone online through paypal's 'friends and family' option. Not only do you not have buyer protection, but there's no tax. Small businesses online that use friends and family often don't file taxes for their business, and that's not cool man.

They will put live animal on the box and the snakes are usually put in a bag (tied) or sealed box so they arent just loose in the package. (There are some bad shippers out there but most professionals will package the snake correctly.)

They do have a waiting list. It usually open on the 1st of March. Be aware, it fills up FAST. All the lists were full as of the 11th of March. So if you want to get a snake, say next year, be sure to have your waiting list email ready to go on the first of March. Good luck in the future! ^~^

Along the lines of looking up reviews, also look up the breeders social media’s. My general rule when buying online is if they aren’t a long time well-respected and well known breeder (think the kind who have published books on snake care) and/or they don’t have active social media presence, I typically will not purchase from them. ESPECIALLY if it’s a newer breeder with little-to-no reviews, if they don’t advertise themselves with some online presence then I assume they aren’t very serious about selling online.

When I was young I bought my first baby corn from a breeder and months later I went to my dads for a week and came home and my mom had forgotten to put the clamps on after feeding it and it had escaped. After tearing the house up we set out pinkies and a heat mat and even put his enclosure on ground level so he could maybe go back he never showed:/ a few months after that I found a boa constrictor locally listed and purchased her (at 12 years old on my own with absolutely no help from an adult) and presented my 9ft female boa to the family after everyone got home from work.. I kept her for years as she’s pretty hard to lose at that size and she was the best snake I’ve had to this day😊

This might be specific since I'm not from the US and, being from Germany, haven't bothered into researching sellers from overseas (as much as I'd love to have a Snake Discovery original. But we got good breeders, too, and it doesn't seem right to me to make a reptile go through international shipping just for the label). And that brings me to the most important point, in my opinion. the animal's health and safety come first. Most hobby breeders here have their own websites with pictures of the animals they have, breed, sale, and the enclosures, and a list of requirements for potential buyers. Many also have detailed guides about the recommended enclosures, light, temperatures, humidity, advice on feeding, background info of the type of animal you want to buy (I say animal because these are not only my experiences with my two snakes but also with birds, hamsters, and dogs.). Basically, when browsing the website shows that the breeder cares more about finding a good home for their animals than about the money and that they are absolutely willing to turn potential customers away when they have a bad feeling, that's a good sign. Most hobby breeders I've bookmarked also offer you information about the animal you buy - birth/hatch date, feeding schedule, what they eat by the time you pick it up, shed history If you ask questions (friendly and respectfully), I also pay attention to the tone - are they polite even if I don't inquire about their more expensive animals? I don't expect somersaults, fireworks, and a parade in my honour, especially not when I buy a classic corn snake but I also don't find it trustworthy when a seller treats reasonable communication as if it's a big inconvenience. The offer to be available with help and advice after the purchase (within reason, of course) is also important to me. One thing that's mandatory for me, be it a hobby or professional breeder, is the possibility of picking up and having a look at their collection. Might again be a cultural thing but I have yet to meet a hobby breeder with a good reputation and love for their animals who isn't enthusiastic about proudly showing off their enclosures/cages/animals. So, if a breeder doesn't offer it, I'm already suspicious, and if they refuse, it's a big red flag for me. Even if I don't plan to pick up the animal myself, the option should be available. Finally, listen to the reviews, read especially those below four stars (in general, with everything, I noticed that 3-star reviews are usually the most helpful because people tend to explain what was okay and what wasn't. 1 and 5 star reviews are often just one sentence/word and not helpful). If certain points of criticism show up repeatedly, make up your mind if that's a dealbreaker for you (I can live with slow shipping and communication, using a default picture for a type of animal instead of the animal for sale is so-so, depends on whether I buy a below 100,- Euro snake or a 2000,- Euro snake. Rude communication, deflection, refusing to refund a deliver of thawed mice after 20+ Euro extra shipping were paid for guaranteed frozen delivery are dealbreakers for me.) I can say, every time I followed my own guideline, I've been absolutely happy and satisfied with the purchase every time, over two decades. Even made friends with some breeders during my bird days (anecdote: One wrote me once an exasperated email, she had a rainbow budgie and if I wanted him, I could have him for the price of a normal, because she just had argued with a potential buyer she didn't trust at all for many reasons and now she just wanted to know that the bird finds a good home. Another anecdote: The evening before I picked up my first corn, a three-hour drive away, the heating bulb died after just a few days of testing. The pet stores were already closed. I texted the breeder to explain my problem and what to do, she said no problem, and sold me a bulb + lamp for a symbolic price.) One time I didn't follow my own advice. I was grieving the loss of my first corn (escaped, turned up five weeks later), tipsy, couldn't stand the sight of the empty enclosure, and bought a snake from a professional breeder. I ignored a dozen of red flags, mostly for a dumb reason: he's got an informative reptile channel on youtube, so how alarming could those flags really be. Very. Wanting to know things like hatch date, shed schedule, how often and what the snakes he sells eat is considered "dumb questions." The snake himself is healthy and turned out to be a darling, but not thanks to him. It wasn't scared or cautious when it arrived, it was terrified of any human presence in the same room. Frozen mice arrived thawed, no ice in the package, and wrapped in a newspaper. Specifications for another item I ordered and where shipped in a different box were ignored, and the package (of the items, not the snake, fortunately, that was shipped separately) was torn and is it didn't have any padding or wrapping and the dirt from the cork bark I bought landed on my floor. Yeah, I know, this turned into a rant. Conclusion: Look up as much information about a breeder as you can, be it reviews or provided by them. Prioritize a breeder's love and care for their animals over prices, morphs, and youtube fame (side note: if they have a youtube channel, watch closely how they act over and treat hatchlings and compare it to other breeders on youtube. It also gives you a hint. I'm also not going to name that one breeder). If you do all that and end up with a vaguely bad gut feeling - do not buy.

Awesome video! Part of my vetting process was looking at their reviews on morphmarket and checking out their Instagram/Facebook accounts so I can see other pictures of their snakes and how they were kept and made sure the breeders were legitimate. I bought an adult Milksnake with the suspicion that he probably wasn’t breeding but I was fine with it because I didn’t intend on breeding him! He was still young though, he’s 4 years old. 🙃 that’s what I was more aiming for anyway, a still young but adult milk snake.

When I was into garter snakes I had the most problems buying them from a particular small reptile shop. The first snake we bought wasn't the right one, and when we did get the right one it died after a day. The best snakes we bought came from reptile expos where I could hold the animals. My favorite was an albino checkered boy that bit me. The vendor was surprised I still wanted him, but I like them energetic.
