Snape's SECRET Message to Harry - Harry Potter Theory

Harry Potter Theory

3 жыл бұрын

Welcome to Harry Potter theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing Severus Snape, Harry Potter, and one of their first encounters in Snape’s first year potions class. More specifically, we’re going to be discussing a theory involving a secret message that Snape may have relayed to Harry when they first met. The moment occurred right at the beginning of the series, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, when Harry first sits down in Snape’s potions class. Already suspicious of Snape, Snape makes it very clear right away that he does not like Harry- mocking him as Hogwarts’ ‘new celebrity’ right before quizzing him on the spot about different magical herbs. In spite of his fame, Harry had known nothing of the wizarding world until very recently, and this meant that he had no chance of being able to answer Snape’s questions. This is something that Snape undoubtedly knew, hoping to make Harry look foolish.
“There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don't expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. However, for those select few who possess the predisposition, I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death. Then again, maybe some of you have come to Hogwarts in possession of abilities so formidable that you feel confident enough to not pay attention! Mr. Potter. Our new celebrity. Tell me, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood? You don't know? Well, let's try again. Where, Mr. Potter, would you look if I asked you to find me a bezoar?...And what is the difference between monkshood and wolfsbane?...Pity. Clearly, fame isn't everything, is it, Mr. Potter?”
At first glance, all this dialogue shows us is that Snape wants to bully Harry a bit- he’s purposely asking Harry questions to which he does not know the answer. However, the theory that I want to discuss suggests that Snape’s questions are actually relaying a secret message to Harry. However, it’s not a message that he ever expected Harry to understand. Snape is a complex individual, and the message in question was simply for himself. Let’s dissect Snape’s ‘secret’ message.
His first question to Harry is:
"What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"
And what’s curious about this is that according to the Victorian Flower Language, ‘Asphodel’ is actually a type of Lily. This lily means ‘my regrets follow you to the grave’ and the second part of Snape’s question - ‘wormwood’ means ‘absence’- which is symbolized by sorrow.
Combined this could be interpreted as 'I bitterly regret Lily's death'."- and this is of course significant because Lily is Harry’s mother, the only woman that Snape ever loved.
Deep, right?
To add to this even further, Snape’s question even contains an allusion to his own death- as asphodel was once believed to be a cure for ‘snake bites’ which of course Snape eventually dies from.
Did you guys know about this theory already? It’s been around on the internet for a while, but I wanted to relay it to you all and see what you thought. Do you think that this ‘hidden’ message was legitimately and purposely integrated by Rowling? Or is this just the result of a little too much overanalyzing by fans.

Kinda pedo and weird to be honest, because those eyes aren't technically his mother's they're his and this is coming from someone who also has his mother's eyes. After hearing that quote in the movie, I can't help but become self-conscious every time I watch the movie series and rewatch the scenes where snape purposely gets close to Harry's face and makes eye contact with him. The first being the scene described in this video. Can't help but to feel uncomfortable knowing what he's fantasizing about, while he's looking at Harry.

Not relevant? “I deeply regret lily’s death” literally explains how much he loved lily and how all of his actions since her demise have been to not only avenge her but protect her only child. Everything snape ever did was out of revenge and love for lily.
@demonprince2646
@demonprince2646 Жыл бұрын
@@LamaKING21 Severus did do many things because of his love for Lily and the protection of her son, yes. But you also have to remember that Lily wasn’t the only reason he made decisions or actions. He spent over 14 years of his life making up for a mistake he made in the past. It wasn’t all just for Lily, it was also to make his own wrongs right again, for himself. His love for Lily was always there, but he fought for others as well, the entire Wizarding World in fact, and of course, he fought for himself and made choices for himself. His life doesn’t revolve around this one person, though it may have started that way, it’s not all about her, but himself and his inner strength and bravery.

When all was said and done I cried when I went back to this 💔 He really was a complex character. I always figured the fact that asphodel and wormwood make the Drought of Living Death was a reference to Romeo and Juliet. In it, one of them drinks a magic sleep potion so powerful that the heart stops beating, and it appears to anyone who sees them that they are dead. Snape and Lily are in different and warring Houses, like in Romeo and Juliet.

I think it was intentional. On the set of the first movie, she told Alan Rickman about Snape's directions, so that he can offer the proper performance for the role. And he carried those secrets up until it was revealed when the 7th book was released.

I've always found this a very interesting scene because I thought Snape was just being a bully, but then as I looked deeper into the message, I realized it had a deeper meaning because of the connection to Lily and Snape's grief over her death. I have something about Snape that I noticed but I didn’t see any one mention it in any HP theory. Which is in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, that’s happened when snape saw Harry’s thoughts and saw those things between him and cho so he knew about their feelings for each other, then when umbridge punish and interrogate him to find out information about Dumbledore's army, she send for snape to give her more of veritaserum but he told her that it’s finished the he said because she consumed the last of the potion on Cho, and then he looked to harry like he says don’t blame her for what she did. And that was really touching sense because snape try to protect that relationship and that young love.

That's not canon to the books tho. In the books, Umbridge used it on Harry to question him about Dumbledore and Sirius. Snape have her fake Veritaserum anyway so it wouldn't have worked. But Harry didn't drink it.

J.K. Rowling has always been very secretive about her hidden messages and riddles that she puts in her writing. In a way I think she was trying to give Snape some humanity despite the fact that he's very bitter about Lily choosing James over him and now James' son was his student. Even if it was just something she knew, and maybe didn't expect others to take seriously, for those few who look for deeper meaning in the things they read would likely have viewed Snape's words and actions very differently. It's also likely that they'd have had a inkling of things to come or a better understanding of things that happened rather than being completely taken by surprise like the rest of us by certain events.

It could be considered too much of a coincidence that J.K. Rowling used those exact plants in Snape's tirade. I think she may have had an idea of what she was doing. It's common knowledge that Harry has Lily's eyes so perhaps Snape was caught off guard and his words were meant more in a self-deprecating sense than as a show of disdain towards Harry? In his mind, he failed to protect Lily, ergo, he failed Lily, the love of his life. That had to be a deep and heavy burden he was carrying.

Considering Alan Rickman was told by JK Rowling before film 1 the whole backstory of Snape, this was most definitely intended as a secret message. Imagine if we had all been fluent in the language of flowers! I wanted to add on to this (from what I've seen floating around on youtube): - wolfsbane / monkshood: toxic plant, meaning "take care, danger lies ahead" - Snape could be warning Harry of the impending danger he would face when Voldemort returns - asphodel and wormwood are ingredients of the Draught of Living Death - Snape's bitter deep sorrow at Lily's death had made him almost like the living dead: he's alive but not dead inside. - bezoar: the ingredient that saves Ron from poisoning in year 6, five years later

DOUBT: Flash back: Dumbledore wore the Marvolo Gaunt ring, But the ring had a terrible curse placed upon it by Voldemort and as soon as Dumbledore wore the ring he understood his grave mistake. Plot twist maybe: Dumbledore realises that he has a year or less to survive and Voldemort has given Draco the task to kill Dumbledore. At that time, The loyalty of elder wand was to Dumbledore. Dumbledore knew that Voldemort would somehow know that Dumbledore was the owner of Elder wand. He was told by Gregowich that whoever kills the previous owner of the wand attains loyalty of the elder wand. So Dumbledore asks Snape to kill Dumbledore lying that he did not wanted a young soul to be stained, secondly, Voldemort would trust him more than ever. So that when Voldemort would find out, how to get elder wand's ownership, he would kill Snape and not Draco. If Draco would have died, Narcissa Malfoy would have declared that Harry is alive in the forbidden Forest. Harry would have died and Voldemort would have conquered the wizarding world. Is this reliable, This is what my theory says of the reason why Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him.

can you imagine if voldemort not only wanted the elder wand to be the strongest wizard, but to also turn it into a horcrux. even better would be if he wanted to kill potter with it for that murder to cause the horcrux to be created. but since harry was already a horcrux, he just skipped the horcrux making part and just attacked hogwarts to prove a point of some kind

Video Suggestion: Is Parseltongue a necessity to create a horcrux? Reason for this idea is because we only know of 2 people who have created horcruxes sucessfully, Herpo The Foul & Lord Voldemort. They were both Parselmouths. When Voldemort created more and more horcruxes, he became more and more snakelike. Parseltongue is the ability to speak to snakes, Voldemort becomes more and more snakelike as he creates more Horcruxes. Coincidence? Like this so he can see it please, I’d love to see a video on this 🙏

There is also another theory - interpretation And it is that according to how the same flowers were used in the ancient Greek traditions, Severus could have said to Harry: On Lily's grave, I swear to protect you. And the did

If you combine this with what he says in the beginning of HBP, he may have been using it to test and see if he was the greater wizard than Voldemort that some theorized he was and to identify as an ally if he was. He says in HBP to Bellatrix and Narcissa that he thought the rumors could be true and he sought to find out and quickly realized he wasn't.

I don't think that's true. Albus pretty much told Snape how Harry survived: Lily's death protected Harry. Snape knew it wasn't because Harry was powerful, so he wouldn't need to check that. He was lying in spinner's end to distract Bellatrix

And a bezoar can bring someone back from the brink of death. Interestingly (to me), is that a bezoar comes from the stomach of a goat. Snape is a Capricorn which is symbolized by a goat standing alone on the top of a mountain.

I think with the monkshood and wolfsbane question he was asking Harry what the difference was between good and evil. They could just be different names of the same exact poison. Don’t quote me but I think that’s what he was saying.

I heard a theory that Snape is still alive. Since he knew how to put a stopper in death, he knew the potion to heal snake bites, he knew Voldemort had Nigini and he knew the 2nd Wizarding War had Voldemort trying to master the Elder Wand which he thought Snape was the master of by killing Dumbledore, he would have prepared for it. Harry didn't stay long enough to make sure he died. What do you think?

I think you're right. Either he healed himself or someone else took care of him. I like to think Hermione stayed or came back and gave him dittany and blood replenisher, and anti snake bite toxin. Help him enough to get him to the hospital. Or maybe Narcissa helped him, since he saved Draco's life. They say his body wasn't there at the castle when even the death eaters were all accounted for. The trio knew where Snape was. Do you think they'd leave his body there after Harry saw his memories? Snape would have to hang low for awhile until Harry clears his name, and most of the death eaters sent to Azcaban. He would be a wanted man on both sides for awhile.

@@barbarazirger7732 guys what are you talkin about hermione didn't know Snape was on their side until harry told her and Ron anyway hermione couldn't have saved him and narcissa didn't know Snape was killed even if she knew there is nothing she coulda done it's not a common venom it was of nagini full of dark magic voldemort made sure that Snape wouldn't have survived the bite he himself knew it plus the venom of the snake spreads very fast in no account whatsoever is Snape still alive
@barbarazirger7732
@barbarazirger7732 2 жыл бұрын
@@theb.i.gnotorious9127 I know what you're saying but he was a potion master. He would have probably been taking anti venom for Nagini for weeks. I know it's not regular venom, but st. Mungo's treated Arthur Weasley when he got bit by Nagini, and he survived . Surely Snape had some of that potion on hand. Hermione and Harry had just seen Snape not attacking McGonagall and take out the Carrow twins. They were told Snape sent the students to Hagrids for "punishment", when he could. Even Harry went over to Snape when he was dying. Remember, they all just heard him not tell Voldemort who the true owner of the elder wand was. He was protecting Draco and Harry. Hermione would of had at least dittany to heal wounds, a bezoar and blood replenisher in her bag of tricks. She also at that point, probably knew the counter spell for sectumsempra. They weren't doctors, they wouldn't know for sure if he was dead. If Snape died that quickly, it was from blood loss, not Nagini, and like I mentioned, he would have been prepared for an attack by her. I like to think he lived.

there is such a thing as overthinking. it does seem odd that the standard potions text was so full of errors though, since lily and slughorn were both taught from that text and were accomplished potion makers. in fact hermione and so many others were skilled brewers in spite of the substandard book.

How would Harry know this to be important when he grows up? Harry is a human being after all and as a child of 11 this message might have stuck in his mind because this is the first verbal encounter with Snape, or it might have not stuck, unless Harry would have used the memory vial for himself after the war. In the end of the day this piece of information is relayed to us, the audience, in order to understand the plot better.

Personally I don't think Rowling is the type of writer that would employ such clever, subtle hidden meanings in dialogue and foreshadowing without making sure you were aware of it by having Hermione literally say it out loud in exposition or it being spelled out as Harry's thoughts. It's pretty cool though.

How can you think that tho? Almost every character has a meaningful name that Hermione doesn't speak out loud to explain to the audience. But the names are chosen specifically to send a message. Take Lupin for example. Any fan should know immediately he has wolf motif going on. That he's a werewolf shouldn't be a shock when his last name means Wolf and his first name is the Roman mythology. But Hermione doesn't realize anything until she did Snape's essay about werewolves. Hermione doesn't explain everything to the audience.

NO, BUT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THE LAST PART. Bezoar is a stone that is created in ones stomach and causes severe discomfort, and the difference between Wolfsbane and Monkshood is one stands for chivalry and the other stands for misanthropy or the dislike for others and/or beware a deadly foe is nearby. In other words most likely meaning in the whole context. "I mourned greatly over your mother's passing, but in this moment in time I'm disgusted to say I wasn't the hero, and your enemies are close."

I think it’s intentional, but I think it’s not a coded condolence but a subtle extra-insult. “What do you get when the live of my life dies and can’t get over it ...you get stuck with this piece of ....” Although, if the first question has double meaning, the next two should as well. What might they be?
