I actually like how the fullscreen mode hides the menu bar, if im in a fullscreen app I want to be immersed in that app. Another nice change here is that when hovering on the menu bar in a fullscreen app it no longer pushes down that fullscreen app which was very annoying and caused a lot of accidental clicks.
@halami21493 жыл бұрын
Yesssss omg that was always so annoying. And it instantly appears when you hover over it on this MacBook, before you had to hold your mouse there and wait for a moment. Then it pushes down on everything, which would sometimes even glitch out the app I was in. I just gave up and just expand the window to the corners of the screen, and I always have the dock hidden. And I changed the dock appearing speed to be instant, so as soon as my mouse is down there, it shows up

You can leave the menu bar visible in full screen mode, its an option in settings!! Default is turned off. The area of the notch is likely defined as a "safe area" in macOS, very similarly to how iOS does it. Since menus are just standard system UI, the safe area is already baked into the AppKit APIs. However, since menu bar apps are distinct apps, its very likely that developers will need to update to recognize the new "safe area." Hence why iStat menus can disappear behind the notch, while menu bar items will wrap around the notch. I don't expect this to be an issue for very long. The notch is brand new to macOS! On top of that, menu bar apps need a proper overhaul in macOS. They've always kind of been like a hack. macOS needs a system for managing menu bar apps. I would expect a collapsible list icon to be added to the menu bar very soon to Monterey.

A couple thoughts on the notch: The necessary UI decision makers seem to have followed in Jobs' minimalist footsteps and so they didn't think anyone would have enough status icons for it to be a problem. As for full-screen + notch: the reason the menu at disappears in fullscreen isn't because the space is needed; only a few apps have specific aspect ratios to their content. The menubar disappears because someone decided that that was a useful/valuable UX. If you want an interface option "uncluttered" by the menubar (but still cluttered by like toolbars and such, apparently?) then you don't want the menubar visible just because there's more space on your screen.

(1) menu bar items on the right always disappeared when the menu was too large with no way to access them. (2) the “warp” across the notch when using menus is inconsistent with normal cursor movement but is consistent with menu operation; since the menus straddle the notch so does the cursor. I.e. when you invoke a menu you’re navigating menu space not your normal screen space; users are used to subsequent menus immediately popping open as they scrub over them, if there were a dead space it would feel unnatural. Similarly warping or colliding with the notch when just moving your cursor around would feel unnatural. (3) there is a new option in settings to always have menus enabled in full-screen mode. (4) as far as I stay menus extending behind the notch, yeah. Got me there.

Macs have some annoying quirks, but once you learn how to change some options around you’ll realize the reliability and consistency is so much better and worth it.

@@harrison2899 true. Even my Mom and Dad have not shifted from apple ever since they first bought iPhones and Macbooks because they are uncomplicated, secure, and last a long time. Sure, user has less control, but lots of people just want something that works and will continue to work for a long time. My mom still uses her iPhone 5 as a backup phone.

I’d be interested in some tests with crossover and parallels to see how it performs with windows emulation.

I'm a software developer, earlier this year in my job they gave me a Macbook pro 13 inch with the regular m1, and I was in a project that requires ruby on rails and docker. The experience was a disaster, running the tests in the M1 took 35 minutes, running the tests in Intel 2.5 minutes. Docker on M1 was buggy and crashing all the time. So to me for work, Intel is still a need, M1 is just for developing M1 software like helping on the ruby team to take advantage of all the bells and whistles. The thing is yes, there was a ruby ARM but M1 is not just an ARM cpu.

Thanks for doing the light tear down - curious if the 16” has significantly better thermals than the 14” with the M1 Pro. Would also love to see a music production test with high voice count synths / virtual instruments :)

Guys, go to settings > desktop & dock, then set automatically hide the menu bar to never, and the menu bar will stay in its place even in fullscreen mode.

suggestion: also do the testing for engineering software thats windows only. most mainstream engineering software still only available in windows, im a geotechnical engineer and plaxis is really heavy on your pc if you dont simplify your design i want to see how new macbook fare against that and also dont forget autocad

The menu bar collapsing menu items into the void when you have too menu App Menus on the left has always been the case on macOS actually. Notch or not.

Why does nobody talk about how all this macbooks are trash after the ssd gives out? There is no way to replace it so the whole machine goes to waste.
@ShinyTechThings3 жыл бұрын
Apple redefined the word "Recycling" to mean throw it away and buy a new one. Also buy the one with 16GB of ram or more to decrease teh probability of swapping to the SSD if RAM runs out and that helps extend the lifespan of the SSD.

Top Bar in full screen can be changed to stay on. (System Preferences → Dock & Menu Bar, under Menu Bar, "Automatically hide and show the menu bar in full screen") But idk why apple disable this by default.

You can leave the menu bar fixed on full screen mode on Monterey. You can enable it in settings under menu bar options. Can you charge the new macs with magsafe hooked to a power bank? Great video btw.
@ShinyTechThings3 жыл бұрын
@cheeks jp I'm going to guess yes but I'll have to find my power bank and try it. The MagSafe adapter is USB-C on the other end so I don't see why not. message me in a few days and I'll probably have tested by then on my 14" M1 Max.

@5:00 I design mechanical hardware and enclosures, They likely used a softer grade of aluminum for the bottom but that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap. If the rest of the chassis is sturdier then a super hard aluminum isn't going to be needed for the base since when assembled the chassis will provide that rigidity. If anything it may be providing some durability as harder aluminums, while stronger, will also crack and fracture

I hate to be that guy with the teardown part, but: - Screw bit is P5, not P3, to remove bottom plate. - They *have* put the battery right on top/behind the trackpad in previous models; it's been standard for years now. The only deviation was the 12" MacBook that had the battery adhered to the bottom plate. Liked and subbed as always though! Great video.

For the Notch, I wonder how "Hide Menu Items" from Parallels Toolsbox would work in showing / hiding menu icons.

18:47 I don't know if they will fix it. It's not about the notch, it's like that since a while. I live with this on my 2014 mac book air since a while. Icons on the right leave place for the menu bar when it take to much space. You have to put the more important one on the right otherwise you don't have access to it. Yes it's stupid. 😂 But I'm actually glad with your test about the notch. I hate notch but it's not as bad as it could had been. Hey thank you again for your test, I'm waiting for my 14 inch M1 max today. 😀

Can anyone tell me if they're get these annoying little pop up ads at the bottom of every KZbin video on their MacBook?.. Not sure if its normal or not and they're really irritating me! I don't mean the normal KZbin ads you get when monetising your video.. These ads kind of just pop up throughout the video playing at he bottom of the video in the middle and im not sure if it's a virus or not. Any info would be much appreciated.
