Heh, I wrote the description a couple years before the game came out, in a recent dev stream they say that they pronounced it like yick pretty much just as soon as the logo was designed! There's so many cool insights in their streams & on the discord.

I actually really enjoy the story and characters of Y2K. Yeah a lot of the fights are frustrating but I was able to forgive them pretty easily and I can always appreciate the wacky Earthbound/Persona esque presentation.

The endings suck, Alex is very difficult to like, the game brings up a lot of random things like racial tensions and journalism ethics, the Elisa Lam controversy, the pretentious, hard to sit through dialogue, the boring pacing, slow battles, shitty leveling system, inconsistent art, obnoxious references... need I continue?

⁠@@damienthonk1506like, half of that can be improved if you remember we’re getting the story as told by alex “worst case of main character syndrome i’ve ever seen” eagleston. a lot of the post modernist stuff the game is subtitled after comes from the fact we’re seeing things through the skewed lens of alex’s self serving memory. doesn’t fix EVERYTHING, obviously, but it does make it make sense. yes, even the endings (which are just alex going so far into delusion he writes a crappy wish-fulfillment ending to replace what actually happened, aka “alex has a meltdown in times square, burns bridges with the whole party, and likely mopes around his mother’s house until he gets the ‘bright idea’ to make a game about his warped version of events”) tl:dr alex being the narrator means we get an incredibly biased look at what happened, and that BASICALLY explains 90% of the game’s story… combat still blows (but that’s what the i.v update is for)

This genuinely makes me upset, I see this game and I truly feel like it could've been something great. If I'm honest I really feel that the game gets more hate than it deserves. It's a train wreck, no doubt about it, but pretending that it had absolutely nothing going for it is just wrong. The script was terrible, but the voice acting was really damn good, the little combat minigames would be a fantastic addition if it weren't for the fact that combat was a slog, the story have some real premise but its overall writing is garbage. the one saving grace for me here is the soundtrack, if the game says one thing about the effort here, the soundtrack says another. The soundtrack just shows that there was SOMEONE who wanted this game to be something truly great, it's a damn shame that the game accompanying it just isn't up to par. Wasted potential, man, there's nothing worse Edit: Actually no this totally deserves the hate it gets, never mind. Still though the wasted potential makes me upset

@@Cuprite1024 There was this one article that came out before this game's release that claimed that this game was going to "save JRPGs". The article undersold other JRPGs in order to make this game seem like "the next big thing". The game disappointed in many fronts, especially in the writing. It's references to other JRPGs felt dishonest, as they either namedropped random games or passed off surface level attributes of games as unique features.

Yeah, that'll do it. Overhyping a game like that isn't a good idea in the long run, same with trying to undermine other games to get said hype. And I can see those complaints, especially with most of the references. Though I will say, with the exception of the cringy 90's talk (Which I can forgive because this game takes place IN the 90's), I've actually not had much of an issue with the games writing, though I can see how other people would.
