I still remember what a shock it was to me learning how Miyamoto-san developed games, just tightening up the controls further and further on grey blocks until even that was fun, and THEN figuring out the artwork, etc. This looks like a classic example of blowing all yr budget on great graphical assets before realizing you have a game that's about as fun as pushing a broken wheelbarrow.

This game feels like the devs were so used to its jank that they didn't even think it was janky to begin with, if that makes sense. Like, they tested it for so long they understood how to play it, then assumed that everyone else would know how to play it. I could easily imagine they're thinking "players can get good at it, they just need to put in the time!" The problem is, the devs _HAD_ to play it to learn it... but no one else would _WANT_ to play it for long enough to learn it.
@sjake83082 жыл бұрын
Time was usually the constraint with stuff like this: Nintendo's ethos back then was to take as much time as necessary to make a good game whereas stuff like this would typically be contracted to an external developer, who would have to churn something out within a limited timeframe (while dealing with interference from executives who knew nothing about the medium). That's why licensed games were so frequently bad back then.
@mikicerise62502 жыл бұрын
Miyamoto basically invented the bouncy jumping mechanics we still program today for Mario-style platformers. He discovered that the realistic physics other developers were trying to emulate just were not satisfying to players. His jumping physics are more complicated than reality. Gravity is weaker as you ascend for a slow floating jump that lets you plan, and then quickly ramps up as you reach the peak of your jump and descend to stick the landing. It's brilliant. That's why Mario Bros. is still considered a top platformer even today. Other systems have since been invented too, but he was the first to really nail a fun-centered rather than real-physics-centered jumping experience.
