I think it's one of those, the N64 could manage far more triangles than it could texture. So S&P being a late N64 game where people really had experience with the system and really were pushing what they could do, I'm hard pressed to think of another N64 game that pushes the same number of moving targets at times. Sure the main character is entirely oragami to really push things, but it works. I will say, I waited 5 years for this game to come stateside. Because when I got it as a Wii Download, that was amazing. And I think the success of the push behind the download and the success of the download is what got Sin & Punishment 2 released. I've since downloaded both games on my Wii U, but honestly, I have yet to launch S&P2. Word of mouth is that it's better, and yet, I don't feel like you can top the utterly insane yet perfect escalation of level design that happens in this N64 version. Within the second level, you're taking out a fleet with a hand cannon, and it keeps jumping up from there.

Best N64 game, yeah I said it. It was released on the Wii Virtual Console back in 2007 and was even given translations for the menus, tutorial and text-only epilogue sequence. You can still buy this version on the Wii U VC! The story is kind of cool, but you won't pick up on most of it since the setup is only in the Japanese manual. I read up on it around the time of the Wii release and when the (also great) sequel came out and going from memory the Ruffians were created using blood from Achi, which has strange and transformative properties. Once the Ruffians go out of control the Armed Volunteers group (I'm not sure if they're military or mercs) declare martial law to contain the threat and control the populace, at the same time a resistance movement called the Savior Group is formed with Achi at its head who is worshiped as, well, a savior. Sometime before the game she gives Saki and Airan her blood which gives them superhuman abilities, then we see most or all of the remaining members wiped out in the opening cutscene and the game begins. I think the story is pretty interesting with the sci-fi apocalypse and cosmic concepts it plays with, even though it has little regard for making you listen to it. The sequel expands the lore and universe a ton too but sadly ends on a cliffhanger we may never see resolved. There's also a manga adaptation of the original game that seems to go quite a different route, though it's untranslated.

They agreed to take it on and then soon after announced they weren't doing requests anymore to focus on stuff they themselves liked, so it ended up just past the cutoff point. At least they posted the raws so I could grab them for myself; there are so many things that share the series' name clogging up search results and the manga itself was one of those tie-ins that gets run one time in a magazine and never reprinted so I'm not surprised interest is low-most people who would be interested probably don't even know it exists.

The N64 is a weird beast. Like, on the one hand, you have classics like Ocarina of Time, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, all of which are contenders for "all time great games", but for every masterpiece, there's twelve Gex 3D's or South Park's. It's really rather sad...by most objective measures, the system was a supercomputer; a proper SGI system for your home (though admittedly a lot weaker than a $100,000 workstation), but I almost wonder if that was sort of its biggest problem too. So many games were trying to push the limits of what was possible on the system, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but that leads to a lot of mediocre "tech demos" floating around. Arguably, because the SNES had *nice* (for the time), but relatively *unremarkable* hardware, people were able to focus a bit more on just making games fun. That said, I still love the N64. I have too many good memories of Ocarina of Time to ever say anything too negative about it.

I've definitely suggested a few "Gohome N64, you're drunk" segments for games that tried to pull off effects on the system. Everytime an N64 game has more detailed shadows, reflections, or other advanced effect. But the wizards who knew the system could pull off real magic too.

According to some video games magazines around 1999, Nintendo was supposed to publish Sin and Punishment for the US region and apparently, they were just about done and all they had left to do was create the package, manual, inserts, etc., press copies, and mail out to retailers. I was mad to all hell that the game has been abruptly cancelled, so I looked on eBay to buy a Japanese copy being that the games language also includes English and I also purchased a converter to be able to play the game. This was recommended to me at complete random but I adore Sin & Punishment so here's a comment for support and algorithm. Any chance that the game could reach somebody's recommended so they know about it is worth supporting, and this was a solid, quick summary of everything the game has to over. Sin and Punishment looks great, plays great, it had an interesting story and characters for all five seconds of it I could understand (even with a translated manual) and I've been meaning to play Star Successor, after I replay through the original again because it's been a bit but I loved it.

Yep in retrospect that was a huge swing and a miss for Nintendo. From what I heard it was actually completely translated and ready to go but never put into production as by the time it was ready the GameCube was literally around the corner and the N64 was all but dead.

Sin and Punishment did come out in North America. Came out on the Wii Virtual Console in 2006. I still have it on my Wii.

I think that game finally got an HD re-release digitally didn't it?! Otherwise it's still stuck on the Saturn.
