The reason the game's dialogue is in English is because the game was initially developed to appeal to a western audience. But it ironically stayed a Japanese exclusive due to coming out so late in the N64's life.

@@ZenithfilmsUK The story I've heard from multiple sources is that Nintendo had it all ready to go and translated but I guess it was so close to the end of the N64 at the last minute they scrapped it. They did end up releasing it digitally on the Wii eShop but that was it. It's good to know it's "out in the wild" and hopefully should we see an N64 classic or N64 games on the Nintendo online service or both it'll show up there as well just like Star Fox 2 did.

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu The translation that is out there is not made by Nintendo. There is a lot of drama around it actually which is why you can't find the patch for the ROM on romhacking or similar sites. The creator of the translation for the version that is for emulators had an issue with the translator for the real hardware version and there was some politics involved. So the real hardware patch or patched rom is harder to come by.
@amerikaOnFire

Indeed there is. I spent hours one night going through a bunch of sketchy sites only to finally find it on a .ru site years ago. This actually was released on America on the Wii Virtual Console (it cost 2 more dollars than other N64 games), and the menus are in English on that version. The game does have a save feature...kind of. It's more like a resume play feature, it saves your place but if you run out of continues you still have to start all over. I think it's one of those, the N64 could manage far more triangles than it could texture. So S&P being a late N64 game where people really had experience with the system and really were pushing what they could do, I'm hard pressed to think of another N64 game that pushes the same number of moving targets at times. Sure the main character is entirely oragami to really push things, but it works. I will say, I waited 5 years for this game to come stateside. Because when I got it as a Wii Download, that was amazing. And I think the success of the push behind the download and the success of the download is what got Sin & Punishment 2 released. I've since downloaded both games on my Wii U, but honestly, I have yet to launch S&P2. Word of mouth is that it's better, and yet, I don't feel like you can top the utterly insane yet perfect escalation of level design that happens in this N64 version. Within the second level, you're taking out a fleet with a hand cannon, and it keeps jumping up from there.

This game was AMAZING, and then some! Even though the controls were crazy to start, once past the learning curve, this game is probably the best advertisement for the janky N64 controller(just perfection). Top 5? Probably top 3 for me, as it took the N64 to places "N" didn't even reach, but that is why Treasure is one of gaming's greatest developers, as this may be their best effort, EVER!

Sin an Punishment is one of the reasons why the Virtual Console needs to come back and include the N64 library. Though the Wii sequel game of Sin and Punishment is also another awesome game, you really get some perspective for this first game before playing the sequel. Best N64 game, yeah I said it. It was released on the Wii Virtual Console back in 2007 and was even given translations for the menus, tutorial and text-only epilogue sequence. You can still buy this version on the Wii U VC! The story is kind of cool, but you won't pick up on most of it since the setup is only in the Japanese manual. I read up on it around the time of the Wii release and when the (also great) sequel came out and going from memory the Ruffians were created using blood from Achi, which has strange and transformative properties. Once the Ruffians go out of control the Armed Volunteers group (I'm not sure if they're military or mercs) declare martial law to contain the threat and control the populace, at the same time a resistance movement called the Savior Group is formed with Achi at its head who is worshiped as, well, a savior. Sometime before the game she gives Saki and Airan her blood which gives them superhuman abilities, then we see most or all of the remaining members wiped out in the opening cutscene and the game begins. I think the story is pretty interesting with the sci-fi apocalypse and cosmic concepts it plays with, even though it has little regard for making you listen to it. The sequel expands the lore and universe a ton too but sadly ends on a cliffhanger we may never see resolved. There's also a manga adaptation of the original game that seems to go quite a different route, though it's untranslated.

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu We got damn close, I found out about it from a post on a blog of a manga translator that was taking requests and someone had submitted that to them. They agreed to take it on and then soon after announced they weren't doing requests anymore to focus on stuff they themselves liked, so it ended up just past the cutoff point. At least they posted the raws so I could grab them for myself; there are so many things that share the series' name clogging up search results and the manga itself was one of those tie-ins that gets run one time in a magazine and never reprinted so I'm not surprised interest is low-most people who would be interested probably don't even know it exists.

The N64 is a weird beast. Like, on the one hand, you have classics like Ocarina of Time, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, all of which are contenders for "all time great games", but for every masterpiece, there's twelve Gex 3D's or South Park's. It's really rather sad...by most objective measures, the system was a supercomputer; a proper SGI system for your home (though admittedly a lot weaker than a $100,000 workstation), but I almost wonder if that was sort of its biggest problem too. So many games were trying to push the limits of what was possible on the system, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but that leads to a lot of mediocre "tech demos" floating around. Arguably, because the SNES had *nice* (for the time), but relatively *unremarkable* hardware, people were able to focus a bit more on just making games fun. That said, I still love the N64. I have too many good memories of Ocarina of Time to ever say anything too negative about it.

I've definitely suggested a few "Gohome N64, you're drunk" segments for games that tried to pull off effects on the system. Everytime an N64 game has more detailed shadows, reflections, or other advanced effect. But the wizards who knew the system could pull off real magic too.

I wonder why he's had a change of heart...I remember a few years ago he had little to no interest in the N64. At any rate, I'm glad to see one of my long time favorite KZbinrs showing one of my favorite consoles some love. And of course I posted this before I played the video...his very first line mentions he's not a fan of the console. lol Also...he sounds a bit exhausted. Maybe it's just me...I've been kinda busy the past year working on my own crap so I haven't been keeping up with my favorite content creators, but I noticed the same thing in the last video. Hope he's doing well...or at least as well as any of us can be during these weird times. P.S. Go Sooners! Beat Texas! (Yeah, I don't give AF...OU is terrible this year and Texas isn't much better. I can't remember an OU/Texas game being THIS meaningless in the past 20 years)

I picked it up on a trip to Tokyo years ago for ~$25 complete. But honestly, of all games, N64 ones are now tough to find boxed (I now live in Tokyo).

It's great playing this on the Wii U. You can remap the controls so you can play with dual analog sticks. Controls and plays great with pro controller on the big screen and plays great in handheld mode too. Absolutely love it!

A game that makes the N64's controller seem functional and not just a Hiroshi Yamauchi's sake induced gamble? Well, call me impress. I too remember this game appearing in several Club Nintendo's previews, and yet I didn't saw it _anywhere_ for rent even after a year or so from its annoucement. Now it makes sense. I don't know what it is that has you so hyper on the uploads, but keep it up, SNESDrunk 👍

Since the video didn't mention it, there is a fan made english patch for this game, if you play it on emulator. Google a dev called Vanit and you'll find it. It works great when u set it up and enhances the game.

Actually in the pause menu you have the option to quit or save and quit. You can start a new game or continue a saved game. But, selecting the later will consume one of your credits.

According to some video games magazines around 1999, Nintendo was supposed to publish Sin and Punishment for the US region and apparently, they were just about done and all they had left to do was create the package, manual, inserts, etc., press copies, and mail out to retailers. I was mad to all hell that the game has been abruptly cancelled, so I looked on eBay to buy a Japanese copy being that the games language also includes English and I also purchased a converter to be able to play the game. It was well worth the headache of finding the game.

I love this game, it's the reason I kept my 64 around. For those that don't know, you can easily play imported games on both the N64 and SNES by using pliers to remove the plastic tabs on both sides of the pin connected of the system. It's easy and still allows it to play US games

Ah, I remember getting this game when it officially released in the West on the old Wii Shop Channel. To be honest... I don't think this game has aged the best due to the aiming speed. There are some moments in the game that demand a bit too much for the aiming reticle's top speed. Shame I feel like saying that, because there are some truly awesome concepts for the game, and it laid the groundwork for the masterpiece that is its sequel.

This was recommended to me at complete random but I adore Sin & Punishment so here's a comment for support and algorithm. Any chance that the game could reach somebody's recommended so they know about it is worth supporting, and this was a solid, quick summary of everything the game has to over. Sin and Punishment looks great, plays great, it had an interesting story and characters for all five seconds of it I could understand (even with a translated manual) and I've been meaning to play Star Successor, after I replay through the original again because it's been a bit but I loved it.

Yep in retrospect that was a huge swing and a miss for Nintendo. From what I heard it was actually completely translated and ready to go but never put into production as by the time it was ready the GameCube was literally around the corner and the N64 was all but dead.
