As someone who played 2nd ed and collected Space Wolves, they were ridiculously OP back then. Nearly all their troops had +1 Weapon Skill compared to regular marines, and the Wolf Guard were character killers in their own right with a WS of 6 if I remember correctly. Back then, WS was the most important stat for close combat as you added your highest attack dice to it.

Moreover you could create an entire squad of 35 wolfguards with Terminator Armour and Cyclone Missiles, spending less point than any other space marine chapter (if they were be able to do the same thing) and I don't think I have to explain what means have the chance to fire 560 Cyclone Missiles in your first round.

Cool detail about the old codex and White Dwarf battle reports of the 90s was that they were almost always written in narrative from the perspectives of army commanders or various group commanders like sergeants or nobs. I think they became less common or stopped completely around the early 2000s.

Originally the Space Wolves were just called Space Wolves and they had grey armour like a wolf and that was it. Then went a little bit 'wolfy' with wolf genes but it was subtle. Then actual wolves started to appear but these were just body guard units so still pretty low key. THEN THEY WENT TO FULL ON GIANT WOLFMEN RIDING AROUND ON GIANT FRICKEN WOLVES!

The 2nd edition Space Wolves codex is amazing. The units are just better in nearly every instance compared to 3rd edition. Grey Hunters had weapon skill 5 and the option for special Power Weapons(Including Power Fists), Plasma Pistols, and Hand Flamers. They versatility of them would be amazing as they still have Bolters and Rapid Fire. So you could double-tap while standing still and have other weapons for special occasions. Space Wolf Troopers werent seen with Power Weapons again until the Horus Heresy books by Forge World. 3rd Edition removed all those weapons. Blood Claws also had Weapon Skill 5 and the option for special power weapons and pistols like the Grey Hunters, but replaced Bolters with Berserker Charge which gave them an extra attack on the charge. They could also use Jump Packs or Bikes. Like the Grey Hunters, the Blood Claws lost their weapons options in 3rd edition and went from Weapon Skill 5 to Weapon Skill 3 because they went from "Experience Berserker Warriors" to "The New Guys". Long Fangs had Veteran Space Marine Stats of Weapon Skill, Ballistic Skill, and Initiative 5, with Leadership 9. The werent limited in numbers. 3rd edition hurt the Long Fangs by reducing their stats to be average to space marines, and they became very limited to Heavy Support units(Standard Heavy Support was 0-3 per army). Wolf Guard were super veterans with Weapon Skill 6, and could use upgraded Melee, Special and Heavy weapons for every single trooper, so 20 Cyclone Missile Launchers is totally valid. Rapier Laser Destroyers and Tarantulas are also in the book, and are quite useful. When Rapiers came back it was in the Horus Heresy books if I remember right and in that book they were reduced in range by half. The only unit that is questionable are the Space Wolf Scout Squads. Theyre just the same as other Space Marine Scout Squads, including the ability to have a heavy every in a 5-scout squad(Pick Heavy Plasma Gun if youre daring). 3rd edition took away the Heavy Weapons, turned Space Wolf Scouts into an Elite choice on the Force Organization chart and limited them to about 3 units in an army. 3rd edition gave them a couple buffs with higher ballistic skill and toughness (3

I got the army in the battle report as an army deal in the issue of white dwarf it was originally published in.
