Great video again Steve, I'm sure a lot of new players will be amazed at the direction of the cue ball, even though you are striking in the same place, just increasing the power.

Excellent demonstration! I feel as though the lines are a bit misleading though. I believe the harder one hits the cue ball the more time it spends travelling along the tangent line before the top spin takes affect. So the actual line the cue ball takes wouldn’t be straight.

Terrific subject for a video Steve. I have been playing for many years but I must confess I did not know that the cueball changed its path with power! Can you offer an opinion on WHY this happens? I wonder if it's because as the impact against the object ball increases, there's an equally increasing opposite force pushing back against the cue ball??
@streetyou1
@streetyou1 3 жыл бұрын
Bro when u hit hard ball hold the stun effect longer and zip takes time to show its effect
@BartonSnooker
@BartonSnooker 3 жыл бұрын
There are a few things at play here so I'll explain the main ones. After contact with the object ball, the cue-ball ALWAYS comes off at 90 degrees to begin with. This is then altered by either top and back spin to move the white off that 90 degree line. So, then the three big effects with power are: 1) the cue-ball will skid more on its way to the object ball. So because you've hit it a lot harder, it won't just naturally be rolling along, it will be sliding as it hits the object ball and that causes it to stun more. 2) the harder you hit it, the white has less chance to move off that 90 degree path, it takes longer because the white will actually leave the bed off the table fractionally, so even if it's got some extra top spin on there, it won't help because it's not in contact with the table to help it alter the trajectory. This plays a big part at very high speeds. 3) the higher the speed, the less chance the white has to grip. Even if it's got some top spin on for example, if it's hit really hard, that top spin is wasted in "wheel spin". Imagine a car wheel spinning on the spot. The same is happening to the white. Even though it's got all that spin on, a lot of it is wasted because it's spinning on the spot and can't grip fast enough to change the path of the white. Hope that helps Mark 👍
@danespen5772
@danespen5772 3 жыл бұрын
@@BartonSnooker I'm not sure why it would be skidding at all. You were hitting the ball above center, so the harder you hit, the more follow spin you are creating. I think...
@jama211
@jama211 3 жыл бұрын
@@danespen5772 any ball hit hard will slide. The important thing to understand is if a ball is sliding due to being struck hard, the spin is a fairly negligible force in comparison, that only starts to matter once it slows down. That’s why spin often “takes effect” after hitting the object ball and losing speed. Imagine a magic cue ball that has a motor inside that spins backwards constantly. Give that ball a big wack with a cue and it will slide, the spinning force being fairly negligible, until it slows down and can grip... it that helps visualise it. Also it’s worth mentioning, always comes off at 90 degrees means 90 degrees _compared to the direction the object ball goes after the strike_. Then, spin takes effect once the ball slows down. As such, the harder you stun, the later spin takes effect. In this case as he’s adding top spin, making it take effect later causes it to follow that 90 degree line for longer before spin takes effect, leaving you higher up the table. Backspin would get you even higher again, of course, but that complicates this demonstration, as this was to show exactly the same shot, and it’s effects at a different pace.
@mark-147
@mark-147 3 жыл бұрын
@@BartonSnooker So if the ball is rolling naturally (none of: sliding, wheel-spinning, leaving the bed) then the cue ball should deflect at the same angle? I would guess there is a threshold speed below which there is only natural rolling. In which case, you would see the same angle of deflection up to a certain speed, right? What sort of speed would that be (dependent on cloth of course, but anyway)?

Thanks for picking this topic. Watching, I realize I don't think NEARLY enough about speed differences to redirect the cue ball travel from the shot. It also looks like you can control small differences in path really well, which could be of great use threading blockers or setting safties. I absolutely positively stink at cue sports compared to the people you teach, but I think this will improve even my lousy game. Glad I subscribed, looking forward to more. I'm always thinking pocket cheat, English induced throw, tons of top or bottom, when just a bit of speed change could probably do the job much more accurately and with less likelihood of disaster. Thanks again. Now I just wish I could get to a table again....I don't even know if my hall will still be there after this long being closed. I already understood the 30 degree (more or less) 1/4 to 3/4 hit rule and tangent stunned rule, but this breaks it down much further. One thing I found that works great for setting up balls accurately for repetitive practice is those little hole reinforcers (sticky donuts) for 3 ring binder paper.

Good Video Thanks - Maybe do a follow up when you are wrong side of blue (maybe thick half ball), and getting back between baulk colours, explaining how power effects the throw of the white - then expand with side etc to dictate the path - this would show us how to practice this shot, so when faced with it in a game we have some knowledge :)

Hey Steve, hope you could give me some insight to a problem I have. When I cue with only my dominant left eye open (right closed), I pot consistently, but when I open my right eye cueing with both eyes, the accuracy drops quite significantly. The cue is right under my left eye in both instances.
@thesnookerbarn7551

Just a thought make sure you are not standing behind the ball sighting with your dominant eye and then getting down to the table and sighting with the opposite eye Theoretically once you get down to the shot and you are on the line of the shot in theory you could close your eyes on the delivery and still pot the ball
@mameeshit
@mameeshit 3 жыл бұрын
@@thesnookerbarn7551 ah makes sense. But I think the issue might be with the cueing. When my right eye is closed, I can see exactly how straight the cue is moving back and forth, but then the right eye opens I can't exactly tell.
@jama211
@jama211 3 жыл бұрын
@@mameeshit I struggled with this exact issue for years. Eventually, I just had to bite the bullet and play with both eyes open and suffer a drop in consistency, took about a month and it came right back to normal, no more blurry eye from shutting it too hard too! But yes, it’s very important to make sure your dominant eye is over the cue and sighting down it straight. You just get used to it after a bit.

Great Video although I'm a little confused by one thing, in other videos you mention that you modulate the power of each shot by controlling the length on the backswing but on the very first shot which had a power of 3 you pulled the cue back to almost your bridge V
@BartonSnooker
@BartonSnooker 3 жыл бұрын
That's right. No all players do it exactly like me. I have a long backswing on the majority of my shots, then it gives me a nice runway to build the speed of the cue up smoothly and gradually. If I went to 2 or 1 in power, I would use a smaller backswing. But for me, anything that is medium ish pace, I use a longer backswing which gives me smooth acceleration. I'd need to work with a player 1-2-1 on the table and see their natural tendencies and habits to determine the exact individual advice. We all do things slightly differently. But the general rule of controlling power with shorter backswings is what players are doing. My backswing on the last shot is longer than my backswing on the first shot. Hope that all makes sense 🙂👍
@chillydk147
@chillydk147 3 жыл бұрын
@@BartonSnooker Thanks Steve, makes sense, so I assume now that there's a minimum backswing length which is a personal preference and there's a maximum backswing which goes all the way to the V. So does this mean that speed modulation increases in equal segments between the preferred min backswing and the max backswing?

Took me a while to learn you can generate spin without just speed. Smoothly accelerating the cue through the ball gives you a longer contact time, and you can generate a lot of spin with only medium speed or even lower with good technique. Try getting the same backspin, hitting it slower and slower every time. You might be surprised!

Could you explain next about the reaction after the cue ball make contact with the object ball, because the amount of contact seems they have a different reaction
@jama211
@jama211 3 жыл бұрын
After contact, the cue ball always moves down the line 90 degrees from the direction the object ball goes after contact. But, if you hit harder it stuns it and therefore it slides it, going along that exact 90 degree line for longer before the topspin grips and pulls it towards the side cushion. The softer you hit it, the earlier the spin takes effect, pulling it off that 90 degree line.
