The clothing and styling choices are interesting. It looks like every effort has been made to make Rachel Zegler's skin tone look lighter, including making Halle Bailey's look darker. Zegler's face has been framed with jet black hair (formerly brown), and her clothing is deep black, except for white stockings (which make her legs white). All this makes her skin tone look very light. Further, it may just be the lighting, but even her makeup looks lighter. Conversely, Halle Bailey has her hair well away from her face, a white top, and black boots, which all combine to give the impression of a darker skin tone. Similarly, Zegler is 'dressed up', and Bailey looking casual makes Zegler look even more 'dressy'.

The thing is, Snow White is an evergreen story. It's not dated because- surprise!- women still fall in love (we always have) and we often still take on domestic roles (we always have and never stopped). Snow White is treated with the utmost reverence by the seven dwarves and she basically takes over and transforms an unsettled household into a home. If Disney wanted to "modernize" Snow White, they could simply develop Snow and the prince more thoroughly and actually add the process of them falling in love. Maybe the prince saves her due to competence (because, another surprise, women actually love when men are competent) and maybe Snow possess a little more savvy than what is portrayed in the original. We can amplify stories through adaptation... not tear them down. Hollywood is missing opportunities left and right, then trashing the audience because we want actual depth. Instead we get *literal* skin-deep drivel. And Zegler is full of it. She's trying to change course as a PR stunt. Hopefully people stop throwing money at these horrible movies (the only part where audiences can actually be blamed- we need to stop funding this stuff).

thats why, imo, the cinderella remake is still the best remake for disney (not like the bar is very high). In the OG Disney cinderella movie, it had a lot of cutaways with the mice as a type of comedy break, while in the remake they stepped away from the animals and mice and gave more of a story to the prince and Cinderella which worked out. Just like you said, they could step away from the animal parts in this remake and add in extra scenes for the prince and snow white, but that would be asking too much from disney.
@Mereologist11 ай бұрын
In my opinion, the core concept of Snow White is that TRUE beauty comes from within. The Queen wants Snow's looks, but is a villain because she is completely unaware that people would love Snow even if she was hideous, and they would hate her own tyranny no matter what she looked like. And the Queen's obsession slowly consumes her. Snow, on the other hand, works hard to return the kindness given her by the dwarves, and is so innocent and giving that even an assassin can't bring himself to end her. If she had only been left alone, she would never have thought of the Queen again. Her beauty is a spring that wells up inside her endlessly. I find it highly ironic that the person they hired to pretend to be Snow White is actually behaving exactly like the Queen. Zegler is arrogant, dismissive, and even cruel to her co-stars. When anyone challenges her, she tries to destroy them violently. Everything has to be about her and how awesome everyone is supposed to think she is. I find it hilarious that Disney doesn't even seem to REALIZE that they've made something exactly the opposite of what they claim.
@Thandi12311 ай бұрын
The thing with Snow White taking on that domestic role is, I never really thought of it as her doing women's work. The way I saw it, she turned the skills she learned as a victim of abuse into a means of survival. Which is pretty empowering in its own way.

That part of developing the prince more into a proper character is what made The Little Mermaid revolutionary in 1989. Yes, it was Disney going back to its roots with an adaptation of a fairy tale, but the fairy tale was updated in a smart and considerate way. It doesn't bother me that the little mermaid doesn't die at the end, just like it doesn't bother me that nobody dies in Hunchback of Notre Dame. Stories and the retelling of stories evolves as culture evolves, and hypothetically, there's nothing wrong with that. It's all dependent on execution though, and recently Disney has been blowing it. The Disney remakes are universally shit because they prioritize what they perceive as political correctness over quality storytelling. And now the chickens are _finally_ coming home to roost. Yes it bothers me that Lion King and Beauty and the Beast remakes made billions, how could you tell.

But it might be much older. The interpretation of the source material is difficult and full of different layers, while she viewed it solely through the eyes of a shallow Hollywood starlet in 2023. She's like an embodiment of every negative stereotype of millennials/Gen Z (narcissistic, arrogant, poorly informed yet overly opinionated, and disrespectful of those who came before them and laid groundwork for their success), but in her case they're all true. You can tell that the nice, charming Rachel in the interview is just a character portrayal from a moderately talented actor, and that the real Rachel was the heel that we saw in earlier interviews.

Did you notice that in the interview they took care to make her look more like the role? Her hair had been brown and shoulder-length, now it's longer and completely black. Her eyebrows were less thick, her foundation makeup was whiter and she even wore white tights! But she still couldn't avoid opening that huge mouth. (No, I'm not speaking metaphorically. I mean her actual mouth). Because in the past two decades, Disney heroines (I'm talking of cartoon ones) all have huge mouths, for some reason. Julia Roberts style. Angular features, prominent jaws and big mouths historically wasn't considered pretty at all, women had to have big eyes, oval faces and a dainty mouth. That's why all those princesses are so jarring. And their real-life counterparts seem to follow the same aesthetics. By the way the other Snow White too is not completely suitable in my opinion. (For one thing, she's too old, secondly has an angular, modern face, and a stubborn look, not the dreamy smooth face of a fairytale princess)

That's possible, but there's another possibility: Rumor has it that Rachel grew up in a very upper middle class environment and even attended private school. Assuming this is true, it would go a long way toward explaining why she comes off as selfish, spoiled, entitlement minded and elitist. She already had a reputation of being outspoken and opinionated long before she said anything about Snow White. Remember Gina Carano, the actor Disney fired from The Mandalorian for alleged insensitive social and political comments? Care to guess who was leading the charge to get her fired? If you guessed a young Latina who has a leading role in an upcoming Disney feature film, you are correct. And that's just one example of Rachel opening her mouth and causing trouble. Now, I'm not saying she doesn't deserve a chance to correct her course. What I am saying is she truly deserves all the backlash she has received. Actions have consequences, and Rachel needs to learn just how far reaching those consequences can be when you continue to open your mouth and insert your foot. She's so toxic right now it doesn't matter what she says -- someone is going to criticize her for it. Best thing for her to do right now is go total radio silence for at least six months, then come back with a more humble attitude. She might just be able to bounce back. But if she doesn't change course soon, she'll never find work in the entertainment industry again.

There is nothing wrong with "diversity, equality and inclusion". The problem is that Disney thought it was a replacement for "making entertainment and good movies / series". @marychocolatefairy11 ай бұрын
Yes, Ledger was epic. I think the most I personally remember was for Tom Cruise as Lestat in Interview With the Vampire. So many fans hated the idea. Even the book's author herself was telling everyone what a bad choice he was, and she had a whole campaign trying to get the filmmakers to switch Pitt and Cruise's roles. Then he turned out to actually be brilliant, and the author apologized both publicly and privately to Cruise. So, contrary to expectations, Brad Pitt was the one getting all the bad reviews. My own thought was that, after the media'd been looking forward for so long to eviscerating Cruise, they turned in their disappointment on Pitt, lol.

Will Zegler put her heart in the performance... the right way? I don't wish her any ill, but I had don't think she ever will. Even if she would, I'm sure she would find a way to pull a middle finger to the "toxic" fans.

So many good examples of this but one that comes to mind is Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. Tons of critics and fans said it was an awful decision and that he wouldn't be able to sell that role. For most of us, we couldn't picture anyone else selling that role like he did.

Rachael, here are your lines for the interview: "I've thought about things I said about the original movie and I realize now that my comments were disrespectful. I should have been more careful. I said things that hurt many people who love and adore the Disney version of Snow White. I hope people will be kind and understand that I'm young and I still have a lot to learn about seeing other people's point of view. I'm grateful that studios are expanding the female characters and giving them more depth and agency. I realize we need to respect the original material and not try to change it into something that turns the audience away. So to those who i have hurt or offended please forgive me and allow me some grace. Give me a chance to play this amazing character for you . I want to see the magic of the original animation preserved in the live action version. That's what matters most to me"

Halle Bailey & Rachel Zegler... should be nominated for "Best Actress Award" for their performance in the Variety interview ... they were both flawless, perfectly victimized, and full of BS. Plus, in this interview, they acted 10X better than either have in any movie they've done. You go, girls!!!

I just find it amazing how 85 years ago Disney was able to make animations that put any of the modern day CalArts beanmouth shit to shame. Just the scene of the Queen walking down the spiraling staircase, the flowing cape, the several layers of animation... How can it be that today when we have technology and resources that would have been hardcore scifi in the 1930's and we still get shit like, well, Disney.

There is another really interesting effect going on right now that is having huge repercussions across animation. Animation quality is actually scary good right now. Scary is the perfect word. Animation can get close, but not exactly real life. Psychologists are finding out that the little inconsistencies that people subconsciously perceive creep us out. It looks real, be subtle differences tell us it isn't and that is creepier than something nowhere close to reality. The result is that animation has changed course and seem happy to find an interesting style. Viewers prefer this to near real life animation.

I noticed the exact same thing… How gracious the animation of the cape was. I think the reason is pretty simple… They were true artists who perfected their craft through care and passion. Now they're just employees working for a paycheck 🤷♂

The funniest thing is that those interview were part of Disney's _first_ round of attempting damage control on this self-inflicted disaster in the making; the attempt backfired so badly they're now having to do damage control on their damage control.

The Snow White thing did the rounds on GBNews and other channels so most people, even normies are well versed in Rachel's BS or at the very least she was unlikeable. Even my mum was talking about it 😂. So when she course corrects they can see through the hipocrisy and the bs again. People now can see through Disney like water. I absolutely cannot wait for this film to fail. And Disney as a whole quite frankly. I love the expression "the truth will out", sums up this fiasco perfectly.

This is why watching The Boys should be mandatory, just to get a sense of the entire mechanized PR rollercoaster that happens behind every single blatantly insincere move like this, every interview, every public appearance, especially damage control. The character of Ashley Barrett is an embodiment of the entire modern entertainment.

So it’s true. Disney has no respect for the audience. Do they really think we won’t notice that they used clothing and lighting to make Hallie look darker and Rachel lighter toned? Even if for many people it’ll only be recognised on a subconscious level. Do they really think that most people are going to be fooled by the dramatic shift in personality, opinion, vocal tone of Rachel in just a few short months? Now, I don’t have much faith in the intelligence of the general public but I have to believe most people will grasp that Rachel has been heavily coached by a PR team for this interview.
