Not only was Zegler coached and told what to say, notice how the makeup she's wearing has softened her features a bit more, to say nothing of lightening her skin tone a lot, and her hair is much darker, longer, more feminine. Combined with the dark dress, it emphasizes her lighter skin tone even more. It's as if Disney is trying to go, "See, she looks just like Snow White. Those bigots are just crazy."

Lol Aka we wanna win the case (profitable movie) so we’ll change everything about her for it. I can understand her being coached to show the original movie respect but them purposely making her look white is hilarious. Looks like she folded like a lawn chair.

I noticed her complexion was much lighter as well but that was never really the issue for me. Hell, the make up and fx people could turn her into an albino if they really wanted to, but they've missed the whole point of people's antipathy towards her. No, the problem was a matter of personality and no amount of make up can disguise arrogance. It's a shame, she's genuinely very pretty and could probably have made for a convincing Snow White, but she's blown it really.

The thing is, Snow White is an evergreen story. It's not dated because- surprise!- women still fall in love (we always have) and we often still take on domestic roles (we always have and never stopped). Snow White is treated with the utmost reverence by the seven dwarves and she basically takes over and transforms an unsettled household into a home. If Disney wanted to "modernize" Snow White, they could simply develop Snow and the prince more thoroughly and actually add the process of them falling in love. Maybe the prince saves her due to competence (because, another surprise, women actually love when men are competent) and maybe Snow possess a little more savvy than what is portrayed in the original. We can amplify stories through adaptation... not tear them down. Hollywood is missing opportunities left and right, then trashing the audience because we want actual depth. Instead we get *literal* skin-deep drivel. And Zegler is full of it. She's trying to change course as a PR stunt. Hopefully people stop throwing money at these horrible movies (the only part where audiences can actually be blamed- we need to stop funding this stuff).

thats why, imo, the cinderella remake is still the best remake for disney (not like the bar is very high). In the OG Disney cinderella movie, it had a lot of cutaways with the mice as a type of comedy break, while in the remake they stepped away from the animals and mice and gave more of a story to the prince and Cinderella which worked out. Just like you said, they could step away from the animal parts in this remake and add in extra scenes for the prince and snow white, but that would be asking too much from disney.
@Mereologist

In my opinion, the core concept of Snow White is that TRUE beauty comes from within. The Queen wants Snow's looks, but is a villain because she is completely unaware that people would love Snow even if she was hideous, and they would hate her own tyranny no matter what she looked like. And the Queen's obsession slowly consumes her. Snow, on the other hand, works hard to return the kindness given her by the dwarves, and is so innocent and giving that even an assassin can't bring himself to end her. If she had only been left alone, she would never have thought of the Queen again. Her beauty is a spring that wells up inside her endlessly. I find it highly ironic that the person they hired to pretend to be Snow White is actually behaving exactly like the Queen. Zegler is arrogant, dismissive, and even cruel to her co-stars. When anyone challenges her, she tries to destroy them violently. Everything has to be about her and how awesome everyone is supposed to think she is. I find it hilarious that Disney doesn't even seem to REALIZE that they've made something exactly the opposite of what they claim.
@Thandi123

The thing with Snow White taking on that domestic role is, I never really thought of it as her doing women's work. The way I saw it, she turned the skills she learned as a victim of abuse into a means of survival. Which is pretty empowering in its own way.

That part of developing the prince more into a proper character is what made The Little Mermaid revolutionary in 1989. Yes, it was Disney going back to its roots with an adaptation of a fairy tale, but the fairy tale was updated in a smart and considerate way. It doesn't bother me that the little mermaid doesn't die at the end, just like it doesn't bother me that nobody dies in Hunchback of Notre Dame. Stories and the retelling of stories evolves as culture evolves, and hypothetically, there's nothing wrong with that. It's all dependent on execution though, and recently Disney has been blowing it. The Disney remakes are universally shit because they prioritize what they perceive as political correctness over quality storytelling. And now the chickens are _finally_ coming home to roost. Yes it bothers me that Lion King and Beauty and the Beast remakes made billions, how could you tell.

The clothing and styling choices are interesting. It looks like every effort has been made to make Rachel Zegler's skin tone look lighter, including making Halle Bailey's look darker. Zegler's face has been framed with jet black hair (formerly brown), and her clothing is deep black, except for white stockings (which make her legs white). All this makes her skin tone look very light. Further, it may just be the lighting, but even her makeup looks lighter. Conversely, Halle Bailey has her hair well away from her face, a white top, and black boots, which all combine to give the impression of a darker skin tone. Similarly, Zegler is 'dressed up', and Bailey looking casual makes Zegler look even more 'dressy'.

I've been a photographer for 49 years, and if there's anything it's taught me, it's a fine eye for contrast. It seems that no one in the comments has noticed the subliminal message encoded in the clothing of the two characters in the "interview". They put a white dress on the brown chick who is still brown. They put a black dress on the brown chick who's wearing more white paint than a goddam FedEx truck, and white stockings. Now reflect upon which of the two Disney is trying, along with an entire multi-hundred-million-dollar production, to salvage, with a desperation that all but drips off the screen, and why they're doing this. But to the average person who doesn't know the story and is looking at it from afar, they'll see two actresses being 'strong' by calling out online hate speech which automatically absolves them of 95% of any criticism. That's how the game has been played over the last few years, paint yourself as a vulnerable person (obviously helps if you're female, a minority or both), wait for some vague form of hate speech to come your way (I imagine there is likely some vile stuff that has been said about these films which absolutely should be highlighted as wrong), and then run with the idea that all criticism is therefore coming from a place of hate and run off various '-ist'/'-ism' words to garner sympathy for yourself from those who just want to watch a Disney movie with their kids

She refers to the story as being 80 years old, which refers to the original Disney movie, which is based on the story published by the Brothers Grimm in Germany in 1857, which itself is based on a publication in 1812 and the first known origins of the fairytale are in 18th century German states. But it might be much older. The interpretation of the source material is difficult and full of different layers, while she viewed it solely through the eyes of a shallow Hollywood starlet in 2023. People did not get upset about her casting at all, but her bashing of foreign cultural heritage makes her look clueless and entitled.

Her eyebrows were less thick, her foundation makeup was whiter and she even wore white tights! But she still couldn't avoid opening that huge mouth. (No, I'm not speaking metaphorically. I mean her actual mouth). Because in the past two decades, Disney heroines (I'm talking of cartoon ones) all have huge mouths, for some reason. Julia Roberts style. Angular features, prominent jaws and big mouths historically wasn't considered pretty at all, women had to have big eyes, oval faces and a dainty mouth. That's why all those princesses are so jarring. And their real-life counterparts seem to follow the same aesthetics. By the way the other Snow White too is not completely suitable in my opinion. (For one thing, she's too old, secondly has an angular, modern face, and a stubborn look, not the dreamy smooth face of a fairytale princess)

(Meaning that they haven’t made 2.5 times the cost of the production). The last few years alone shows that they THOUGHT there movies would be hits no matter what. So any backlash from the social media wouldn’t have swayed them in the slightest to change anything. Now we see the results of them having to back pedal after heavy losses of money. And we see the old habits still in play, them not wanting to change anything. Of course we do need to recognize that they already spent the money of this trash fire. They don’t want to spend any more then absolutely necessary. So no new main actors or anything like that.

That's possible, but there's another possibility: Rumor has it that Rachel grew up in a very upper middle class environment and even attended private school. Assuming this is true, it would go a long way toward explaining why she comes off as selfish, spoiled, entitlement minded and elitist. She already had a reputation of being outspoken and opinionated long before she said anything about Snow White. Remember Gina Carano, the actor Disney fired from The Mandalorian for alleged insensitive social and political comments? Care to guess who was leading the charge to get her fired? If you guessed a young Latina who has a leading role in an upcoming Disney feature film, you are correct. And that's just one example of Rachel opening her mouth and causing trouble. Now, I'm not saying she doesn't deserve a chance to correct her course. What I am saying is she truly deserves all the backlash she has received. Actions have consequences, and Rachel needs to learn just how far reaching those consequences can be when you continue to open your mouth and insert your foot. She's so toxic right now it doesn't matter what she says -- someone is going to criticize her for it. Best thing for her to do right now is go total radio silence for at least six months, then come back with a more humble attitude. She might just be able to bounce back. But if she doesn't change course soon, she'll never find work in the entertainment industry again.

If she said, "who knows, in Hollywood someone could just come along and cut all his scenes", it would've been a lot better. There is nothing wrong with "diversity, equality and inclusion". The problem is that Disney thought it was a replacement for "making entertainment and good movies / series". Nowadays women have to be "strong" and "in positions of power", when storytelling 101 tells you that this is a problem. Everyone likes a smart, creative and resourceful woman that uses her strengths to compensate for her weaknesses as a protagonist (same as for male protagonists). But that's not allowed. It still bothers me that Rachel called the original Snow White “dated” 😤 Like seriously, how is one wanting to find true love or a woman showing femininity a dated concept? Those are things that still exist today, like I’ve seen and worked with couples around my age (I’m in my late 20s) where the girlfriend/wife expresses how much they love their boyfriend/husband, and I think that’s really sweet of them to show that! If Snow White was “dated” then that means every woman these days would be loveless, soulless, emotionless, empowering robots….and we also wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for women as well (same with men too 😅). The point is, love is always wanted and needed! ❤️

Calling a story like Snow White, which has been around in folklore in various forms for hundreds of years, "dated" shows a complete lack of understanding of the source material. There is a reason these stories have endured for centuries, the social tropes they embody didn't just disappear in the last generation.

Phrases like "dated" and "didn't age well" are the new smears directed at anything more than ten-years-old that happens to run afoul of the standards set by our would-be censors. Opposite-sex courtship resulting in love between a man and a women without social commentary on the patriarchy or unequal power relationships is automatically suspect.

Fan backlash for casting happens all the time. The key is put your head down, ignore it, and make your performance so brilliant that people forget they even criticized the casting. Honestly, the most fan backlash on a casting I ever saw was for pretty boy Heath Ledger to be playing a gritty, realistic Joker in the Dark Knight.
@marychocolatefairy
@marychocolatefairy Жыл бұрын
Yes, Ledger was epic. I think the most I personally remember was for Tom Cruise as Lestat in Interview With the Vampire. So many fans hated the idea. Even the book's author herself was telling everyone what a bad choice he was, and she had a whole campaign trying to get the filmmakers to switch Pitt and Cruise's roles. Then he turned out to actually be brilliant, and the author apologized both publicly and privately to Cruise. So, contrary to expectations, Brad Pitt was the one getting all the bad reviews. My own thought was that, after the media'd been looking forward for so long to eviscerating Cruise, they turned in their disappointment on Pitt, lol.

The fact she's still cast as Snow White and didn't step down, and as far as I can tell from this interview, didn't apologize, tells me she/Disney is just trying to deflect. Nothing will ever redeem a bratty little girl insulting the original movie and smugly laughing at people not being happy that she doesn't look like the character. If she had left the project because she wanted someone else to be Snow White after listening to criticism, and apologized for her ignorant and mean comments, maybe I'd believe she was truly changed.
@tahlia__nerds_out
@tahlia__nerds_out Жыл бұрын
Of if she had weathered the storm and apologized for coming off as so bratty and smug, I think she might have been okay. Some fans would have never been won over, but she might have been able to do damage control if she had accepted responsibility for the main part of the backlash she’s facing. Because honestly, she really doesn’t look so Latin that she absolutely couldn’t be a convincing Snow White. I mean she’s only half Colombian (if that; I know that her grandmother immigrated to the States like mine did, but I’m not sure if her grandmother married an American or a Latino) and she is not so dark that the uproar might not have died down once people could see thar she could look like the original Snow White. Her own smugness and mocking disdain for the source material is what hurt her more than anything else. The parts of the interview that I saw did not fix that, as she and Halle basically called people who had issues with them haters and even said something at one point to the effect of their haters' lives being sad while they themselves were in movies. Keeping it classy, ladies; how not to apologize to fans by talking down to them. I see what the goal was with this interview, unfortunately they missed the mark by continuing to blame fans even while retracting previously shared opinions as if the previous interviews never happened. The internet is forever; Rachel is going to have to do more than blame fans and pretend respect for the source material she mocked if she wants to win back a frustrated fan base. The attitude change with no addressing of her previous attitude makes her current stance seem artificial… the change from "ugh outdated movie" to "such an amazing classic" is so drastic that it almost gives you whiplash. Disney would have been better off if they had encouraged her to apologize for previous statements and then express a new-found appreciation for the source material. As it is, the dramatic change in opinions feels like a massive overcorrect on their part.

You can see clear as day that she was being honest and saying what everyone else at Disney says and she was empowered to say it, because that's what surrounds her. Turns out that those comments don't vibe with the general public, so rather than Disney backing her and having some solidarity they've scapegoated her as if she is the only one at Disney with these opinions. This interview really shows that Disney wants to control your views on them by feeding you what they think you want, because if you could see right through then we'd all probably hate them.

I just find it amazing how 85 years ago Disney was able to make animations that put any of the modern day CalArts beanmouth shit to shame. Just the scene of the Queen walking down the spiraling staircase, the flowing cape, the several layers of animation... How can it be that today when we have technology and resources that would have been hardcore scifi in the 1930's and we still get shit like, well, Disney.

There is another really interesting effect going on right now that is having huge repercussions across animation. Animation quality is actually scary good right now. Scary is the perfect word. Animation can get close, but not exactly real life. Psychologists are finding out that the little inconsistencies that people subconsciously perceive creep us out. It looks real, be subtle differences tell us it isn't and that is creepier than something nowhere close to reality. The result is that animation has changed course and seem happy to find an interesting style. Viewers prefer this to near real life animation.

There was this show about models (women only) back in 2005 aprox. One of the girls was black. When visiting a Nelson Mandela museum, she asked to another girl "is he alive or dead?" There was no response, but she found out later he was alive. A few scenes later, she was crying (fake as f...) and one of the other girls asked what the hell she was crying for. She answered: "Because it's Nelson Mandela! You know?" And the best moment was the previous girl saying "you didn't even know if he was alive or dead a moment ago!" This Zegler girl reminds me of that, IDK why. I guess the fakeness and cringe.

Even if for many people it’ll only be recognised on a subconscious level. Do they really think that most people are going to be fooled by the dramatic shift in personality, opinion, vocal tone of Rachel in just a few short months? Now, I don’t have much faith in the intelligence of the general public but I have to believe most people will grasp that Rachel has been heavily coached by a PR team for this interview.
