Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.
I have the largest Small Engine Repair Video Library on KZbin and the entire internet with over 1200 videos, just GOOGLE "DONYBOY73"!

I'm starting a lawn service in the spring and am doing snow removal to buy mowers, trimmers etc. I had a full day booked today when my starter rope snapped twice. Went and got the right replacement and with very little small engine experience I was able to get myself up and running again, all thanks to you buds.

Thank you very much donyboy73! I just used your very detailed and helpful video to replace the broken starter rope on my Craftsman 11.0 HP snowblower that I bought from Sears here in Canada back in 1999. My starter rope assembly did not have the hole you mentioned at 3:10 of the video so I used your advice and made one using an exacto knife. After listening to you emphasize the importance of the rope diameter, I elected to use the existing starter rope and just burn the ends with a lighter. I was lucky that the original rope just broke right at the knot in the assembly. The replacement rope I purchased at Canadian Tire was a different diameter so I can just return it. The bolts holding the cover were rusted so I had to soak them with a little WD-40 to loosen them up before I removed them. You saved me the time to send out the snowblower to a shop to get repaired and the associated costs. You also saved me from the shovelling of snow I would have had to do while I waited for my snowblower to get repaired. Thank you very much! The electric start on my snowblower does not work anymore as well. I may attempt to replace it using your other video after having success with this repair. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

This was a great help!!!! A hit a couple of snags that might help folks. First I couldn't get the rope out of that initial entry point. It looks like on mine there was a staple that was pushed through the plastic into the rope to anchor it. Once I pulled out the staple I was good. The other thing was I couldn't pull the rope through easily. Even with needle nose, there just wasn't enough wiggle room (and it looks like in this video part of it was removed?). What I did was tie a fishing string to it and pull it through. I had to make sure I snipped the top off to where the knot was so it would pull through easily. Last I did find a pull start rope with the pull tab at Lowe's. It was only $3.99 and worked great..... I could never get the pull start to work and this thing works better than ever now! Thanks!

Thanks very much. My Tecumseh 10 hp is back up and running with a 1/2 hour's worth of labour on my inexperienced part. Had to create a notch with a utility knife and there was a metal guard where the handle hole is to make things difficult. A heavily modified coat hanger was used for the hook. I used six feet of cord. All is working well. Thanks again. Now on to the auger!

donyboy -just wanted to say thank you for this video. I had to do this procedure on my Mastercraft snowblower with a Tecumseh 8HP today, and it worked perfectly. Thank for the tip on cutting the slot to put the rope, because mine didn't have a slot in it at all, and that made it much easier. Like you said, I heated a screwdriver made my own slot. This *really* bailed me out because I have 2 snowblowers, the Mastercraft and a 1973 Ariens 7HP, and I broke the starter rope on BOTH today.

Great video - it helped me replace mine this past weekend. One thing I did - which actually saved me a lot of time is I wound the recoil by hand before putting the rope back in. This avoids the hook & notch technique. I wedged a couple of flat head screw drivers to hold the recoil in place align the holes. Then I inserted the rope, tied the knot, removed the scres drivers and the rope would back into place. Your video was a big help - thanks!

Thanks for the hint. I tried to remove this staple originally but it would not budge and it appeared I had to disassemble the unit first so that was why I was inquiring. Once I put a little more pressure on it and some hard prying it broke loose and came out easily. Replaced the rope and all is fine now. I just needed a little confidence that this was the correct way to disassemble it. Thanks again for the great videos as I always go to you first for help with my power tools.

About 5/6 years ago, after the pull rope broke on a lawnmower, I watched this video. Actually, I brought the pieces in, set in front of the computer (so I could watch/pause), and replaced the rope the first time. I sold the mower a few years later and the pull rope was still working great. Flash forward to today. I bought a used generator, that needed the pull rope replaced, and I was luck enough to find this video - again. And, just like before, I brought everything in, sit in front of the computer (with a cold beer this time) and followed along just like before. I paid $50 for the (5250 watt) generator, bought a new spark plug, fuel filter, oil and the pull rope (about $25 total) and spent about two hours changing the oil/filter, replacing the fuel filter, spark plug, oil and replacing the pull rope. I now have about $75 in a generator worth at least $250 or, if a tropical storm/hurricane is forecasted to hit our area of Florida, $350 and up. Thanks again. If you ever get down to SW Florida, I'll buy you a few beers!

Hi, thanks. Worked! Was a little more difficult than your video, maybe my machine is older. It's a 2003 Craftsman with a Tecumseh 10.5. It looked exactly like your recoil, except there was a piece of metal welded on which prevented me from "grabbing the rope" with needle-nosed pliers as you do at 2:14 of your video. Instead, I melted the rope as you suggest into a point, and used the pliers to force about 5cm through. Then I bent a paperclip with the pliers so it had a little hook, and fished the line out through the funnel on the handle hole. I found that I had to wind the spring for 7 complete rotations (tried with 4, but the engine wouldn't start). When I released the spring with 7 rotations, it wound the rope all the way in to just before the handle. Replaced it on the snowblower, gave it a few pulls, and it fired right up. THANKS!
