The Alberta citizens are well tuned for winter. Some homes still use coal furnaces to heat their homes. There is a huge load of natural gas up there. The cost of living must be a bit steep.

It has not changed since when I was a kid. Even today where I live, kids still have to go to school in -45 wind chill conditions. The only time they get a day off is if its a blizzard and they are snowed in and literally cannot go to school.

I just looked it up. The record low for Edmonton is -49.4 Celsius. The record low for Anchorage is surprisingly only -37 Celsius. Calgary's record low is -43 Celsius.. Winnipeg's record low was -48 Celsius. Winnipeg has longer lasting and more consistent cold than the other three. The daily mean in Edmonton in January is -10.3 Celsius. In Anchorage it is -8.4 Celsius. In Calgary it is -7.6 Celsius. In Winnipeg it is -11.4. Winnipeg is colder on average than the other three.
