It's not so much that he is an invincible god, it's more that he is written such that he outsmarts everyone and always wins even when it doesn't make sense. He's basically Chuck Norris. Only, Batman can breathe in space. Although with Poe's law it is difficult to say if there aren't fans that unironically see this as a good thing. Male DC superheroes never lose, which makes the villains the actual heroic characters: The superheroes personify the obstacles the hero antagonists struggle to overcome. It also means that the female superheroes are more interesting because, unlike the male superheroes l, they can make mistakes, and learn from them. Batman never makes mistakes, and he is always prepared for everything.
@manat317903 ай бұрын
@@davidwuhrer6704 Are you high? That's not how heroism works. Also, male heroes never lose? Have you ever read superhero comics? Particularly event comics and miniseries where male characters get severely traumatized, knocked around, or killed off whenever the writers feel more edgy than usual? Especially everybody in Dick Grayson's generation that have bad things happening to them all the time and for no good reason?
@davidwuhrer67043 ай бұрын
@@manat31790 The word "hero" is from Greek, and basically just means "protagonist", but obviously that is not how the word is used in English. And especially not in American superhero comics. Campbell's hero's journey is about overcoming obstacles and learning. It has a beginning and an end. For superheroes that is not the case: Their origin stories get retconned, and their stories are expected to go on indefinitely. Not only can there be no hero's journey, there is also power creep. Superheroes can never be powerful enough, physics be damned. The most famous superhero in comics is without a doubt Asterix, who has superman strength and speed and endurance, but mostly relies on his cunning, because being invincible is one thing, but overcoming obstacles is quite another. But Asterix is not an American superhero. Outside of comics it would be Super Mario, until DC Comics and Marvel Comics jointly trademarked the term so Nintendo couldn't use it anymore. The most famous American superhero would be either Superman or Spiderman. The latter began as a parody of the former. They have the same colours, and both work for newspapers. The difference is that Spiderman does actual work for the paper and still can barely make rent, while nobody knows what Superman does, who made his home somewhere in Antarctica and often leaves the planet or even the universe for weeks. Superman began as a reporter with superhuman strength, speed, and durability, uncovering social injustices like the rent being too damn high, and meddling in the affairs of warmongers and rent sharks directly. But not for long. He had been retconned into being an illegal alien from a destroyed planet, under a red sun with stronger gravity, thus explaining how he is superhumanly strong, which led to secondary superpowers like being able to see through walls and shoot lasers from his eyes. Also, he can fly, breathe in space, and hear a dog whistle from four light years away and answer it in seconds. And also retroactively he is no longer the last survivor of his planet's destruction. Also, he's from Kansas. (Cory Doctorov's The Super Man And The Bug Out is a more realistic take on what life would be like for someone like Kal-El.) Because of the now defunct Comics Code, the heroes had to be law-abiding and morally upstanding, while criminals like the Beagle Boys were not allowed to be successful at anything, ever, and could also not be protagonists. This created numerous problems. For example, Batman is a vigilante, which makes him a criminal, and there are at least two theses about how Commissioner Gordon could not legally accept his help, no matter what clever tricks the writers came up with. It is also rather boring that the hero always wins and the villain always loses. The Last Action Hero made fun of that trope. For DC Comics, there was an out: Women and children, even superpowers ones, were not regarded as action heroes, and as such they could make mistakes, be wrong, and learn from that. Marvel split off to pursue a different route: Their ridiculously superpowered heroes started out from scratch, learning about their powers and their limits, and making mistakes along the way. They also addressed social issues that DC wouldn't touch anymore because it could offend part of their readership. (And then Dark Horse made comics where the villain of one series was the hero of another, which is why the Comics Code is defunct now. So DC's Main Man, Lobo, could finally get his own series, poking fun at every cliche and doing what the writers could not even mention before. Of course Marvel's Deadpool parodied that, like he parodied the Death Of Superman event (where Superman didn't die of course; he's not Fritz The Cat).) So in American superhero comics, you have the conservative DC Comics, which has superpowered humans acting like gods and the slightly less conservative Marvel Comics, which has veritable gods acting like people. Which is why I specifically said that the male superheroes of _DC Comics_ can't make mistakes to learn from. Those of Marvel can and do. In DC, only the villains, women, and children can. With Marvel, villains often become heroes. (Or vice versa, in the case of the Punisher.) You mention mini series. In DC, those are often the only stories where the heroes get to do a hero's journey. They are also never canon to the ongoing series. (This, too, is different with Marvel.) There is also Watchmen, which was a separate complete series deconstructing the superhero trope, and which was only later bought by DC. So to answer your question: Yes, I did read superhero comics, enough so to know that they have nothing to do with heroics. And that the villains are often the better people compared to the heroes. Just because your name is on the cover doesn't mean you are the Good Guy - it just means that you get away with it. Like every action hero, and like the most detestable Harry Callahan who was not meant to be a role model, but it's his name on the poster so people thought he was. Same with the protagonist from Falling Down, who even acknowledged that he is the Bad Guy and people still make excuses for him. There are many stories where the protagonist loses or dies, but because of the Comics Code - and the Hayes Code in Hollywood - the American audience doesn't expect that and focus groups don't accept it. And you are an example of that.

Why would they give him a talking to? What's the downside exactly?
