The idea of Tamriel being completely playable doesn't sit right with me, I just think one of the best parts of Elder Scrolls games is the deep dive into the providence that the game is in. We really got to know Skyrim, Cyrodiil, Morrowind ect. deeply and I feel that will be lost by them spreading themselves too thin by doing all 9 providences.

kinda agree, like, one of the reasons the holds could have like, 15+ buildings that could all be entered, was because they were smaller towns, but there also wasn't dozens of them. better AI development tools can help some, but it'd be better to make a 'solid' region akin to skyrim's size or so, rather than like a full on continent of like, 6 skyrim ish regions. especially if the creation engine can only handle a skyrim ish region sized area already, so we'd basically need to load each of the 'chunks', then load bits inside.

After playing through Starfield's procedural content, I'm hoping there's a huge improvement to that system before trying to add it into Elder Scrolls. You can make the excuse that space is actually empty so the limited creatures and structures makes sense. If I'm exploring Tamriel and it's as dead as the planets in the Navion system that will be a TRAGIC inclusion into the game
@TheJackal1229 Жыл бұрын
IMO, I would more so prefer for procedural content to function on the periphery of the game or as a kind of "DM/random encounter" system. They should focus on stacking the game with deeper, hand-crafted, & more unique content first, and then use some procedural stuff to add content along the periphery of the more hand-crafted stuff. I think a lot of the content would also go a much longer way if they didn't design a lot of their content around everyone being able to experience all or most of the content in the game in 1 playthrough. I.E., how in Skyrim you can become the archmage without knowing a single spell (all you need is a fireball scroll).

That's just the boiling point of the resistance against the Thalmor. That doesnt mean the entire game will take place in that region. Potentially having all of Tamriel to explore in ES6 worries me a lot. Could have a situation of an in-game world that is vast as an ocean and as deep and as a puddle. Unfortunately that’s how I feel about starfield at the moment. It was just too ambitious and the world design suffered. Starfield made me appreciate Skyrim even more. Skyrim perfected exploration with wonders around every corner. Skyrim may not have had the best graphics but it is a BEAUTIFUL world. I have still never been sucked into a video game world as much as Skyrim. What makes me keep coming back to play Skyrim is not the combat, or the story, or the rpg mechanics; it’s the world. My perfect ES6 would be the world design of Skyrim, mixed with the companion design of fallout 4, and the customization options of Starfield (as long as those don’t interfere with the core game).
@cory99998 Жыл бұрын
Fully agree, the environmental storytelling doesnt exist in Starfield from what I've seen so far. Partly the fault of the weaker worldbuilding not having a lot of material to make use of like TES and Fallout can, but something as simple as setting out on an adventure and getting lost in the world doesnt really happen for me in Starfield. It was a good attempt and it has heart to it, but it just doesn't compare to exploring in their previous games. And ngl, Fallout 4 suffered here too. Its just that the worldbuilding is so rich that you dont need to do a lot of handcrafting for it to be interesting. But it was definitely weaker. I'd rather them reduce their scope and do more handcrafting.

Bethesda games need more choice and consequences in quests. Their games feel like static playgrounds compared to many other rpgs.
@TheJackal1229 Жыл бұрын
@@fuckso2342 Agreed. A flaw in their design philosophy is that they like people to be able to see and do everything on 1 playthrough. Emphasizing more on consequences & adding multiple layers of choices and approaches that totally change the course of what's available for players (meaning that they might hypothetically get locked out of or locked into some options, occurrences, or features) is necessary to create a more meaningful experience, IMO. There's an article recently where Sven Vincke of BG3 mentions the importance of focusing heavily on designing more fringe content even if only a fraction of the player base ends up discovering it. I think that BGS tends to focus more on crafting content that a large amount, if not most of their players will all experience, instead of more fringe discoveries (not saying that BGS games don't have fringe discoveries, just that their formula would naturally benefit from emphasizing this more).
@fuckso2342 Жыл бұрын
@@TheJackal1229 Well said and the funny the thing Obsidian already showed how to evolve the Bethesda formula and add depth to it 13 years ago with New Vegas. It makes the world feel real and lived in rather than some playground for the player.

Where do they go when ES7 drops? It’s a franchise, and the bigger you go the more fans expect. So adding the whole of Tamriel would then become the map for every game going forward, that doesn’t seem sustainable for them to pull off. I would choose a smaller hand crafted map over procedural generation in general. Maybe sailing could be procedural, but that’s so specific it’s unlikely. My one dream for these games has always been being able to work your way up from any status and found your own town, watching it grow, and becoming the leader of your own prominent faction. Fallout 4 got closest to this with its settlement building system, but it's integration into the story was meh at best and it lacked a lot of the progression that would make for good roleplaying experiences. You weren't really the founder and leader of this town, you were just someone placing down structures or crops and letting other people move in to inhabit it. They also said this was optional, but it wasn't really due to the final quest and some missions overall. Starfield feels like a major step back in that regard and it's honestly a bit disappointing. I was hoping they would've expanded heavily on that system, making colony building a large and expansive venture out into space where you could colonize a planet with various settlements, growing a civilization - potentially networking that planet to other planets where you've done the same thing. Of course, if you wanted to do all of that. It'd be optional, but if you chose to do it, it would effect the story in some capacity. A dream Elder Scrolls would have the option to settle a small village and have it grow into a powerhouse of the region you're in, watching it grow and prosper, and having to deal with issues that the people have. There are so many flaws in Fable 3, but one of the best things it did once you were King was have your people approach you with various issues and you were forced to make a choice. Both had consequences, but that was the price you paid for being king. Eventually within the story of Elder Scrolls 6, if there was some kind of war broken out between two factions (hypothetically, since that's a bit too close to Skyrim's story), then you would be able to declare your allegiance to one side or the other, or staying neutral, or creating a potential third faction where you come out on top as king and are forced to sway other cities to your side. It's not enough to just be called the leader of a faction in Fallout 4's case. You weren't really the leader at all. You weren't telling anyone what to do, making any plans, controlling the minutemen, interacting with members of the group in any meaningful way - anything like that. You were just a stand-in with a meaningless title. It's a lot to ask for something that should be optional, but in a general sense, for a franchise that wants to be the king of all RPG's where you can "be anyone and do anything", is it too much to ask for an option to roleplay as a leader of your own faction or town and have it intertwine with the story if you choose to do so? Still gonna play the hell out of it regardless.

I still think ES6 will have two provinces, Daggerfall and HammerFell. Maybe also they have the Iliac bay, and islands in it. Both have a surprisingly good amount of biomes with different types of forests, plains, rocky terrain, mountains, hills, praries, in both provinces. Swamps in Daggerfall, and deserts in HammerFell. Also both provinces have just a history together. They also have similar names of types of weapons in the province name, dagger and hammer. I would be totally fine with just HammerFell. On the other hand, they could just have one of each kind of guild, but it seems pretty unimmersive to me to, for example, only get to join the dark brotherhood when there’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to also join the morag tong. Based on hints given by Bethesda I'm pretty confident the game will take place around Iliac Bay between High Rock and Hammerfell. Given that these are two different nations of the Breton and the Redguard, it may focus on a large scale conflict involving the sovereign Hammerfell and the Empire. The Thalmor are also likely to play a bigger role in this game. This could work well with Bethesda's focus on having higher number of characters in a given area in cities and combat, which could make war battles much bigger than in Skyrim. Also, having two regions instead of just one would already make this game far bigger than Skyrim. All of Tamriel is honestly just a ridiculous idea and you know that. ESO hasn't even done all of Tamriel, and the biggest complaint about Starfield is how empty and soulless it is outside the hub cities. Personally, if Todd wants to be remembered well and this is his last game, then he should focus on writing and player choice. I know he loves big games so it would be impossible to have the depth of BG3 or New Vegas, but most longtime TES fans want BGS to go in that direction in terms of depth, characters, dialogue, and writing. Want the best fantasy simulator? Make an immersive game. How to be immersive? Make the writing good and your choices interesting. It worries me how little BGS takes into consideration the desires of their fans. It's clear they care far more about profit than making a good game their fans want, but they said the fact people hated the voiced protagonist in Fallout 4 only played a small role in not doing it in Starfield. AND THEY STILL DID (technically if you know the spoilers).
@gethriel Жыл бұрын

Fallout 4 might have a dialogue system that constantly ended with the same outcome but all the options still were voiced. I might be wrong but I got the impression that Fallout 4 had more playing dialogue than Skyrim or Oblivion. So a voiced protagonist doesn't limit the amount of options.
@georgek2574 Жыл бұрын
@@yeti112 Oblivion and skyrim were both made with very small teams given the scope of the games, hence the writing was very limited. starfield for example has over 4 times of the amount of voiced dialogue as FO4, for all of that to be properly voiced would be asinine. thats why BG3 went with a voiceless protagonist and it was the correct choice. a VP will always limit the writing and future expansions/DLC as the voice actor might not be avalible anymore. and ABOVE ALL a voice protagonist in ES would be extremely difficult as many races sound COMPLETELY different and you would need a male and female voice for those different races. i would much rather that budget go to other things
@yeti112 Жыл бұрын
@@georgek2574 I do agree about ES. With all the races it would be difficult indeed, not impossible but probably way too more work to go through with it. As for Starfield I guess it still could have worked without losing dialogue but Bethesda would need extra scripters to implement all the lines if they don't already have them considering the size of Bethesda now. So I wouldn't say that a VP automatically limits the amount of dialogue, it always depends on how much resources the developers are willing to put into it. At the end what I'm trying to say is that I don't like how many people are just so against a VP when Fallout 4 did have a VP with more dialogue than previous Bethesda games. If the developer decides to use a VP, it should be optional but being against a VP from the very start is a bit of an overreaction. As you said, for something like ES can be complicated but Fallout should be fine as long as the developers got the resources.
