It's a strange one. I think France have effectively lost their X-Factor, but that seems harsh when you look at the rest of their team. Overall, I think they've lost the one player in the world who can see when a defender is effectively a half inch out of position; but that's not too bad when the majority of your team can see when they're half a foot out.
@fredericdehohenstaufen78744 ай бұрын
Apparently it still makes a big difference. Lucu is ok to finish a game seriously, but not to make a whole game at that level and not to win a game which you're about to lose. Too "normal" of a player.
@jop26634 ай бұрын
@@fredericdehohenstaufen7874while I don't necessarily disagree, we also have to consider that the last time France played ireland, the result was almost identical to last night despite Dupont playing in that one
@fredericdehohenstaufen78744 ай бұрын
@@jop2663 Well, the score is not always saying everything. Last year, it was in Dublin, this year in France. Secondly, last year the game was even at half-time, with France even having the score advantage at some point. Yesterday it felt like France couldn't do anything, and just managed to get 2 tries with some fluke (the second is not valid for me) to stay at a one-try distance. Yes Ireland was better both times, but the manner is also significant. Ireland was great last year, France was appaling ths time. I think it's one the of the poorest game on the french's side I've seen in 5 years, just the feeling that they couldn't do a thing, completely destroyed for 80 mins and not even by a superb Ireland. Ireland was really good, but on theirs standards (which are really high, but still). The tries were not even that hard to achieve, French defense was completely "aux fraises", or off on 4 of the 5 tries. Nonetheless, I'm not that scared for France since I think there is also a lot about getting back in shape with new systems, new trainers (Ghezzal and Labit left), new players and the young generation. We can clearly see galthié's thinking is a little off balance. He tried to put some stability with UBB's players, but at International level, talent works better than solidity, especeially for France's rugby culture. It's the same in Toulouse's team, having a solid foundation doesn't do the trick when you miss 8 key players, even for the best club in Europe. They can bring all the solid 2nd choices they want, who know the club and the systems, they lose 75% of their games during international periods.

France depth is insane ... probably the largest pool of players in the world. Lucu is simply unlucky to be n°2 behind the best player in the world. But he is a great player himself and improved A LOT over the last 2 years. He is running the show together with Jalibert now with Bordeaux. Very different style of playing compared with Dupont but he also brings something to the table. He is a leader, a true fighter and never gives up. Dupont also has that but sometimes he is just miles ahead of his teamates and seems a little "too" calm. And Le Garrec ... I hope he will have some decent playing time because this guy is coming ! 21 years old, already very experienced and showing huge improvement since the begining of the season too. I am really excited to see how these two are going to perform this year. We also have a lot of angry and super talented young players waiting for their time! Meafou and Tuilagui at 5, Le Garrec at 9, and Deporteere (!!!) at 13. I want to see them in this year's 6 Nations. Allez les Bleus! Grand Slam it is, and it starts with the most difficult challenge tonight!

That is a fair point, but is Lucu really experienced enough on the international stage and Le Garrec definitely isn’t experienced enough. France just didn’t seem like the same team today against Ireland they really lacked a leader in my opinion, maybe Ireland were too good this evening, but like you rarely see a player get a yellow and then a straight red in international rugby that could just be my opinion though. I wouldn’t be crazy shocked if Scotland managed to beat them

The truth is, while Dupont is an exceptional rugby player, probably one of the best ever, In Top 14 , he is barely the best 9. While the others like Lucu don't have the same range of abilities than Dupont, they are solid, reliable, consistent 9s. Just watch any UBB game and look how fast Lucu is getting the ball of the ruck compared to Dupont and you'll see what I'm talking about. So of course Dupont will be missed during this tournament, but he's being replaced by an exceptional player, whose subbed by another exceptional player. And even without them, other really good players and future stars remain available for the french national team. And that goes for nearly every positions, execpt perhaps the front row . Thank's for the video!

I wasn't impressed by Lucu at the World Cup. I thought the ball speed was a lot slower with him, and preferred when Couilloud was at 9. France have had more time to prep than when Dupont got injured at the World Cup, so I guess we'll see how Lucu does over the tournament.
@PonchoGreg4 ай бұрын
Fair enough - I've always noticed a big dropoff in ruck speed when Lucu came on vs the "3-second Dupont" monster... But I've got to say I've been super impressed by Lucu at Bordeaux recently. Very very quick and efficient, just marshalling that offence and turning the screw on when needed. Quietly confident in him and Jalibert given their run of form. But we'll see...

My humble 2cents. France and Ireland are polar opposites. Sexton is/was holding Ireland back. Ireland are a better team without him, just need the players to realise their own value and ability, and to stop thinking they are nothing without him. He regularly costs Ireland big games with his ego, poor decision making ect in big games. The Ireland team has the grey matter while Sexton too often makes the wrong the decision as captain ect, for all his talent and ability to make great individual plays, he does so at the cost of the team as a whole. Dupont is the core of France. Without him, they are going to struggle to find themselves. He is a true catalyst for France. The brains behind their attack and key to unlocking defenses. The French team, has all the talent, but not the grey matter in a way Dupont has, for reading a game, reading the opposition. For all his individual talent, its his ability to get the best out of his team around him in his ability to direct them, show them the path, that is his value in contrast to Sexton. Going to be an interesting season watching the fortunes for each team unfold without these two players.
