I always recommend to anyone going down the Alexander O'Neal rabbit hole to listen to the entire "Hearsay" album from start to finish...It's a Saturday night party wrapped up in a single album. Starts off with energy (songs like this one and "Fake"), ends up with baby-making music (the always-on-my-playlist "Sunshine"). There are probably three defining albums from Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson's "Control", New Edition's "Heartbreak", and Alexander O'Neal's "Hearsay". They were on point for some of the biggest hits of the 80s and early 90s.

Alexander O’Neal is one of the princes many musical offspring. He was originally in the time. Prince fired him, and I think it was One of his best music decisions Next to firing Jimmy and Terry because he has a amazing voice.

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis produced Alexander's first & second album. They've done very fine production for Janet Jackson's 2nd & 3rd albums as as well. They have a arsenal of music production during the whole 80's into 90's. Also, A,J. Johnson (actress, dancer) is featured in this video. Hey Maddy, we should both go hit the dance floor to this jumpin' jam😆 GREAT selection for song reaction💯💥

Hi Maddie - Many comments to make here. Firstly, this is one of my fave all time bangin' hits, oh and bye the way I'm 67, but hey, I saw this guy live in concert at The Royal Albert Hall in London in 1991 (backed up by the Pasadenas). His bands always had a good women's contingent, (indeed like Prince as he was once a member of The Time - a Prince band) but this video is a 'made for effect mix' version of that hit and there only actually 2 'real' female artists in this video, the dark girl AJ Johnson on the keyboards, and the equally beautiful Brie Howard-Darling on drums. As for building up a sweat, this was one of his hallmarks, always wearing made to measure suits but always and I mean always getting into the groove during his concerts. At the one I attended, he got down in the pit at the Albert Hall and danced with the fans, sweating like a maniac he was. This guy had more success in UK than in US and used to tour UK almost yearly during the 80's and 90's and I understand he still tours the here regularly. A great, great song - put it on in the car on the open road whenever, and you will be transported back to the great times of the 80 & 90s.

The background vocals / chorus are of course the selling point, but it was great you noted the bass, as that's a solid groove.

The man is a legend.Drop one of his tracks at a party, you can't go wrong.O'Neal came to prominence in the mid-1980s as a solo artist, with eleven Top 40 singles on the US R&B chart, three of which also reached the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. However, he enjoyed more mainstream success in the United Kingdom, achieving fourteen Top 40 singles on the UK Singles Chart between 1985 and 1996, along with three top ten albums on the UK Albums Chart. His solo singles, sometimes dealing with lost love, include "If You Were Here Tonight", "Fake", "Criticize", "The Lovers", "(What Can I Say) To Make You Love Me", "All True Man", "Love Makes No Sense" and "In the Middle". He is also known for duets with Tabu labelmate Cherrelle such as "Saturday Love" and "Never Knew Love Like This". AllMusic described O'Neal as having a "tough voice [that] has the same grain and range as that of Otis Redding."[

I'm a bit late but I produce music in a similar 80's retro style. That "sound" is a called a gated reverb snare. Accidentally invented by Phil Collins original producer Hugh Padgham.

This song is produced by Jellybean Johnson of the Time who was part of Jimmy jam and Terry's Lewis's production team after he left the time. The female Vocalist is the legendary Lisa Keith who sang on all of Jimmy and Terrys hit songs .

Many 80s pop songs employed electric drum kits. I think you are talking about the drummer hitting an electric snare.

This is a banger but I have to admit the production doesn't suit Alexander's voice as much as other tracks on the album. The background singers actually overshadowed him. Alex's first two albums are classics, full of quality hits. One of my favorite singers from that era.
