How such a ridiculous rule is allowed in a "World Championship" is beyond me. It's unfortunate, but justified, for a weekend scholastic tournament. The classic world championship format is incredibly biased towards the reigning champ so a tie-breaker rule with a bias towards lower rated players isn't the worst imo. The classic world championship favors the champion because he doesn't have to compete in a tourney with all the strong players and show they're the strongest in the field, they just have to beat one opponent in a long format who happens to have won the tournament in a very strong field. Of course it will be a strong opponent and he still has to win but it's laughable compared to an actual open tourney where you have to come out on top playing all the best players and win to become world champion

I was checking the web site for standings and I notice something that doesn't jive with me: why are the prizes for the men championship better than the women prizes?
@Bladieblah2 жыл бұрын
There shouldn't be a separate women's championship to begin with when you think about it. And I could be wrong but I think most chess tournaments allow men and women to play in the same main competition. Chess is a thinking game so men don't have an advantage like they have in most physical sports. However, chess has a very skewed male/female distribution where it's maybe 90% males and 10% females at the highest level. I remember it being brought up earlier and statistics showed women are statistically not worse in chess, they're participation is overall much lower which is why you don't see women at the top level. The women's championship can be seen as a way to promote the sport for women and that's a good function but it doesn't need to have a similar prize pool when women are free to compete in the "men's" competition

The "Men Championship" is actually an open tournament, ask them why they don't want to join a tournament with better price

I don’t know who Nepo had to play, but Magnus had to play Alireza and Hikaru, which is a rough road

Rules are rules unfortunately , I would have thought that if there were more than 2 players in the top spot , the top 2 with the most wins should have gone through .. Congratulations to young Abdusattorov for beating Nepo in the finals

Fabi deserved that (for the 5 moves draw), and Nepo would have deserved it, too.

If Carlsen miss the winning move here or miss the draw against Abudsattorov which would give Magnus the title, how about playing chess and missing winning moves.
