Some good arguments there (and the shout-out is much appreciated)! On a slightly different note, I'm not sure if people recall, but there was an official MCU timeline that was included with the 'Art of The Avengers' book. Interestingly, they used a similar dating method to the Star Wars universe in which all events were marked as occurring either before or after a certain point (in this case, Tony's declaration that he's Iron Man). So events were were listed as X years or days before Tony Stark reveals himself to be Iron Man (BIM) or X days/months after Tony reveals himself to be Iron Man (AIM) - no actual dates were shown. Between the release of the Avengers art book and the upcoming MCU Timeline book, an updated official timeline with temporal markers of some sort was never released. However, we know Marvel Studios have been keeping track of continuity, with director Jon Watts revealing that he's been shown a scroll with the MCU timeline on it. How accurate this scroll is and how closely all directors and writers have to adhere to this I'm not sure; it may have been a loose framework so they don't contradict themselves too badly, allowing MS to date certain films/television shows at a later time, like...now. Ha ha. Also, if anyone is interested, please check out my 'Marvellous Synergy' series of books. I cover how the MCU films were made, the various comic book references, deleted scenes, and filming locations. At the moment I have books covering the first three phases - you can find them all on Amazon. I also have a podcast imaginatively called 'The Marvellous Synergy Podcast'. I haven't released a new episode in a while, but there are two special eps which cover my time as a background extra on 'Shang-Chi' and 'Thor: Love and Thunder'.

Yes, one of the reasons I wanted to give you that shout out (in addition to the excellent point you made) was to give a subtle plug for what sounds like some amazing books that you have written. I'll have to check them out myself! Also, I love that timeline from the Art of the Avengers book. It seems, for the most part, that they have stuck with that. It was the first timeline to really lean heavy into Fury's big week and it breaks it down literally day by day. The only think that they seem to have retconned is that the timeline placed IM 1 in 2009 if you do some clever math. However, it seems the timeline book is going to movie IM 1 to 2008. I'll be doing a video on that move soon. Fun stuff!

I'm not so sure All Hail the King should affect The Winter Soldier's placement. Some of the shorts are basically part of the narrative of an earlier movie, an addendum, they go together - they are almost like extended post credit scenes (or preludes). It only makes sense to watch AHtK immediately after IM3, instead of waiting. That's what D+ timeline reflects, I think, at least in this instance.
@AbitofEverything4U Жыл бұрын
My apologies, I didn't explain that very well in the vid. I was basing the new date for CA:TWS on both the D+ timeline and the Index that was released on Amazon. Using the Index, we know that IM 3 is in Dec, 2013, with what appears to be the end credit scene in Jan, 2014. We know AHTK and CA:TWS are both in 2014. Then, we know that there has to have been some time pass between IM 3 and AHTK, since Trevor had made friends (and enemies) and had done several interviews. So that puts AHTK in spring of 2014 and thus moves CA:TWS to spring as well.

Thanks for the shout out! Overall, I am feeling better about this placement the more I think about it. Two things: 1. Without trying to delve into tense waters, I actually have a different theory for Ellis. My guess is he was a top Republican Senator/governor or something along those lines. As politics usually go, Obama was probably blamed for the attack on New York (and possibly some of the other attacks prior to 2012), which resulted in the other side gaining momentum for making promises of safety. I assume something similar will happen in Captain America 4. This also makes sense with stuff like the Iron Patriot, since Republicans tend to be more gung ho in the flag iconography, which also makes sense that Ellis would have his quote in the Captain America museum, even if he wasn't president at the time. It fits with the jingoistic vibe. And his previous job as an official would still help with him helping fat cats and such (which is another common criticism of Republicans). 2. Do you think they will ever just come out and say whether AoS or Netflix are canon or not? I know they are trying not to burn bridges, but this is getting old. They just need to pick an answer, and stick with it.
@eagc7 Жыл бұрын
i don't think they will at least not for now. But lets have our eyes on Daredevil: Born Again, as that could at the very least end the debate on the Netflix side of things.

For 1. I totally agree. For 2. Feige has said on numerous occasions including this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIqze6embdqLZqssi=tmkNirdvr9RZ0grY Saying that the shows are canon. This doesn’t mean they fit perfectly in the mcu. Just as with something like the iron man timeline being wrong because of several statements where it can never be right, or homecomings blatantly wrong 8 years later statement there’s continuity errors. There always has been and there always will be. But nobody argued iron man isn’t canon, so why do they do it for the tv shows when they do the same thing? This is a huge cinematic universe and they’ve gotten plenty of things wrong. Just because some show stuff is wrong doesn’t make them not canon. But even still I don’t think we have anything blatantly wrong, just some stuff that needs an explanation. Agents of shield for example fits better then iron man and homecoming, so why is it’s canonicity in question but those aren’t? Because it was made by someone else? So is Spider-Man. So again why is this even a question? I really don’t get it
@QuartersAlpha Жыл бұрын
@markdarc0448 I'm fine whether the old TV stuff is canon to the sacred timeline or not, the only reason I wish they would settle the matter more definitively (as in, actually within the movies and not just random and/or old statements) is because if they are truly canon to the main timeline, I want them to actually be able to utilize those characters and stories. That way they can bank that extra character development. Take Daredevil in She-Hulk. I don't feel the same way about him if he's a new version of the character as opposed to being the Netflix one, because if he is new, that is a whole new branch of development to consider. Doesn't mean that he is a worse character, he's just different. I know this is a more controversial take, but I think an example of this going wrong is Logan. Frankly, the Wolverine in Logan just isn't the same character as the older movies. The timeline is so fractured in that universe that by the point of Logan, they are just creating an all new character for a one off story they want to tell. The only problem with that is the story is trying to treat it like the end of an Era, but in actuality, it's just a one and done but with actors you recognize. While it still has impact, I think it is lessened by how it treats the continuity. I just don't want something similar to happen in the MCU. I just want embracing the old, or a true clean break, and leave the rest for the multiverse. Hopefully Born Again answers the question.

I still think that Iron Man 3 was conceived as a December 2012 event, at least when it came out, but they clearly changed their minds afterwards, despite me still thinking 2012 works better overall, but I like your explainations here. Just one thing about the Winter Soldier placement: it's been a while since I've last seen AoS first season, but I don't remember them explicitly mentioning winter. I remember one of their bases during that time being in a snowy area but, I mean, snow can be present outside of winter too.

Yeah, I've had IM 3 in my timeline in 2012 since...well, since it came out! So I was really surprised to see it in 2013, but I do think it works better. I'm so glad it gets Ellis out of Obama's presidency term as that was a total error on their part. As for Winter Soldier, there are a few issues. In S2 E1, Talbot says "we've been hunting for you all winter". So if the last several episodes of S1 are in April, that line doesn't really work. Then, there is a mention of there being several months between the end of S1 and beginning of S2, so that would put the start of S2 in July-ish timeframe. Then, in the episode that crosses over with Age of Ultron they mention it's been a year since Ep 1. But if Ep 1 is in July, then the AoU crossover is in the wrong month, as that movie is in May. I don't think any of this messes with the overall story, but it just makes some of the lines get retconned abit.

It still annoys me that IM3 itself was written like it was taking place in December 2012, and the writers of AoS had IM3 in mind when they wrote the Extremis bits, and Marvel is now reconning it to be in 2013, basically forcing us to figure out how to make it all work. You did an excellent job of making it all work in this video, so yeah, I'm happier knowing that these are not necessarily blatant contradictions, but still, they made us have to come up with clever explanations like these to make everything fit. All because of Marvel's... reasons? I mean, you made a really good point that President Ellis's term makes a lot more sense now, but is that the main reason why Marvel placed it in 2013? And I've lost count of how many times we've had to come up with explanations to keep AoS potentially still canon after Marvel thoughtlessly trampled over its lore.
@AbitofEverything4U Жыл бұрын
Yep...great commentary. It's a strange movie as I've assumed it was in 2012 ever since it first came out. However, I do think it was a major mistake for the movie to place itself in 2012 and yet also contradict the fact that Obama had been heavily hinted at being president, especially in Avengers...which is of course also in 2012. And it always nagged at me that AoS didn't refer directly to IM 3. Like Coulson never said "check the files on that incident with Stark", etc. And of course the 35 suits of armor in 6-8 months was very odd, but ig I just assumed Tony was going off the deep end. So while I absolutely think it was intended for 2012 by the writers, I wonder if the director stuck in the 2013 newspaper date because he didn't like all these inconsistencies. In the end, I'm warming up to 2013 because it actually seems to fits better, other than the very weird math of 1999+13 = 2013. Wild stuff.
@markdarc0448 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree that this fits better in December 2013. Some of the lines are a bit weird, though, things like being 13 years later from essentially the start of 2000, but that being the end of 2013? That’s pretty much 14 years, so that’s strange math, but given clear in movie dates and this seemingly being their stance in the timeline book we can’t really deny it. I mean ultimately marvel could come out and say something crazy like actually iron man 1 is in 2012 figure it out and there’s not much we could do. But thankfully this work’s pretty well, i still feel like marvel needs someone a bit better thinking through all these things or at least better communication with its fans to say yea we placed this here for this reason here’s how these “plot holes” can be explained away in some cases. Over these past few years with things like cap in endgame coming back and she hulk and Shang chis timeline, we can make it work with some explanations and it makes sense but I wish they just made this all clearer for fans where we didn’t have to come up with these explanations. I wish it was just very clear oh yea Shang chi takes place before she hulk and cap came back to the sacred timeline. Some throwaway lines about how hulk met some new guy and has been training him to be an avenger or cap saying after Peggy died so he decided to come back or something like that would make this all so much easier.

I still *prefer* it being set in 2012, but it totally makes sense if you don’t think of IM3 showcasing the onset of Tony’s symptoms. He’s probably been having anxiety attacks not long after the Battle of New York but a couple months after it he begins doing what he always does: tries to solve a human problem with an engineering solution. And again, while I prefer Christmas 2012, it does make sense for him to have 20 months to not only construct almost three dozen new, highly specialized armors and also to vet them for combat and rescue operations.

It doesn’t make sense to me that Tony would be just starting to experience his PTSD a year and a half after the battle of New York rather than six months after. I just get the feeling that Marvel Studios doesn’t really care about correctly placing their movies in a coherent timeline anymore. Don’t get me wrong, they are still my favorite movie studio creating my favorite franchise but I feel like they don’t do the continuity research as well as the community or the fans do.
@AbitofEverything4U Жыл бұрын
I'm with you...I felt that same about his anxiety attacks being 20 months later. But the Mayo clinic article said it can happen years later and I can say that's true, as my dad suffered from PTSD as a result of the Vietnam War and that didn't start to affect him until several years later, when it then became crippling for him. Our brain is a strange beast and it can hide a traumatic event deep in our memory until it finally comes crashing out. So I think that aspect of the movie works fine in 2013, tbh.

@AbitofEverything4U5 ай бұрын
Good question. I think the series needs to start in the fall of 2013 for a couple of reasons. 1. It needs some time to develop before the Winter Soldier crossover, which is in March of 2014. So it would be pretty crunched from a timeline standpoint if it didn't start until early 2014. 2. There's the image of Ward's access being granted on Sep 9, 2013. They show it really prominently, so I think they wanted it to be viewed as an official date. Sometimes a date is really hard to catch and only visible if you zoom and enhance, but that date was shown in a way that makes it seem they want the series to start in the fall of 2013. Honestly, I kinda like Iron Man 3 happening later in sesaon 1, because I always wondered why they didn't pull up the files on what happened in that movie and why they didn't reach out to Tony for his expertise on the issue when they encountered Extremis in the series. If the movie hadn't happened yet, that actually makes alot of sense. Anyway, just my thoughts on it. Really appreciate you watching the vid and sharing your feedback. Thanks so much!

I disagree that Tony needs more than a year to make 35 suits. For one thing, he made the mk II in about a week - 8 x 4 is 32, so it’s plausible, especially since a lot of these armors are just variations of the same design (this one has one piledriver, this one has two, etc). The other thing is that we don’t see him use most of these armors until the end, and none of them seem particularly well made. Tony and Rhodey keep hopping from suit to suit because they keep getting destroyed. I could be wrong, but I’ve always inferred from the movie that these armors weren’t quality but just a way for Tony to fill his time, and that’s why he didn’t have any problem blowing them all up at the end.
@AbitofEverything4U Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I never had a huge issue with Tony creating all those suits of armor between May, 2012 and Dec, 2012. You make a decent case, but I still think that Iron Man 3 makes a lot more sense in 2012, both because of Tony's PTSD and because I can't believe that a literal genius like Tony Stark would not be able to do the math on a kid's age to say if he'd be 12 or 13 years old. But we'll see if the book has a justification for it when it comes out. I'm glad the first movie is in 2008, at least.

@@AbitofEverything4U I mean, is it possible that they placed the conversation with Bruce & Tony as happening after Thor the Dark World because the entirety of Iron Man 3 is Tony recounting to Bruce about his journey dealing with his PTSD, what he put Pepper through, removing the arc from his chest. @AbitofEverything4U Жыл бұрын
The reason I'm fairly certain that the entirety of IM 3 is in Dec, 2013 is that the index shows Malekith being listed in the timeline book before Maya Hanen's entry. So that implies the entirety of Iron Man 3 is after T:TDW. Then, they seem to be placing Bruce talking to Tony (i.e. the end-credit) in early 2014, but the rest of the movie is at the very end of 2013. @giovangciccareli18299 ай бұрын
Dude just move Winter Soldier to April 2014, its the only thing that makes "majority sense". All we have to screw up the timeframe is one Talbot reference to winter, which can be ignored. Even in Agents of Shield, post Winter Soldier its quite obviously spring, if not early summer. If we can excuse the "8 years later" reference in Spider-Man Homecoming we can excuse a one- off Talbott reference. So, in relations to AOS when does IM 3 take place? After season 1, ep 10, which aired on Dec 10, 2013 and the next episode picks up 3 weeks later?

I want to say this about Agents of Shield. I really love that show. In fact, I think I love the show more than I love the Marvel movies. Early on, I really wanted it to be considered Canon because there was so much potential there. During the first two seasons, it really felt like it was connected. However, when the movies refused to acknowledge anything about the inhuman contagion spreading through the fish oils, which was a really huge world-changing big deal, I could tell they were going in two separate directions. I brushed It off, but it bothered me. When season 5 ended and they went into season 6, it was obvious they took two completely different directions with the Battle of Wakanda in Infinity War. At this point you had to jump through hoops while doing cartwheels to find a way to argue that Agents of Shield was still Canon to the MCU, but I suppose it wasn't completely impossible. Then, WandaVision happened. The Darkhold in that show was so completely and remarkably different from the Darkhold in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that we just cannot pretend anymore that there's any reason to believe that the two are connected in the same universe. I suppose we can make multiversal arguments but there is no way that the show is Canon to the sacred timeline. It is simply not possible. That's not what I want, I wish there was some other way to look at it, but that is just the fact.

I don't those are problems. The darkhold "problem" was already explained in this comment thread, but the blip thing also isn't a problem. The blip happened offscreen, nobody of the agents was snapped (just like the og Avengers weren't) and the sixth season is set after a year with the seventh one being set in a different timeline (and they return to the normal MCU one with the Quantum Realm at the end). It is very normal that they didn't mention it considering all of this and everything they were doing during that time (like Sarge), but we actually saw some effects of it like Shield used it as a way to come back as a legal organization again and we see Mack on a hiring spree probably because half of the people working at Shield got dusted. To close this comment up, let me ask you this question: do you also believe Ms Marvel season 1 is not canon? I mean, that series happened after Eternals and it had a lot of MCU references in there, but they never once mentioned Arishem appearing in front of the Earth or the Celestial in the ocean. Because there's number 3 in 2013, so I like the placement

Yeah, I'll say as someone that thought it was 2012 for the longest time that I'm now convinced that 2013 is the right timeline placement. Great feedback!

I'll admit that I haven't watched the entirety of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but I have watched up to the end of season 5 and while I think it is a great show I don't think it works as part of the same continuity as the Marvel Studios MCU projects becauseit just convolutes everything. The way I have always viewed the TV is the same way as I view Avengers Campus in Disneyland and Disney World, the MCU is cannon to the shows but the shows are not cannon to the MCU. When the book comes out we will need to look at the character pages for these specific characters. Phil Coulson, Peggy Carter, Daredevil and Kingpin as they are the only Marvel TV characters to be in the main MCU
@AbitofEverything4U Жыл бұрын
Yeah, much as I love the show, I do fear that Marvel will end up treating it as a separate continuity. And in the end, I'm fine with that, but I do wish they would just state it one way or another, rather than leaving it so ambiguous. Hopefully we'll get an answer one day.

i think iron man works in 2013
@AbitofEverything4U Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'll be honest...I have assumed it was Dec, 2012 since...well, since the movie came out. But looking at all the facts, it really does seem to fit better in 2013. So I'm sold on it!

Some people think that Agents of SHIELD is not canon but MCU wiki fandom timeline thinks Agents of SHIELD is canon want to you think
@AbitofEverything4U Жыл бұрын
I've always taken the position that it's canon until we are definitely told otherwise. But I am worried about it, as the show isn't in the D+ timeline and it isn't in the timeline book coming out next month. So I am fearing it will eventually be de-canonized. Sorry there isn't a more definitive answer, but I can say that for now I consider it canon.

Yeah, it was so nice to see Obama get established as president. It's always bugged me abit that it seemed Ellis was overlapping with Obama's term. But IM 3 in 2013 works perfectly!
