That shot at Lord Bledisloe was pretty out the gate. His great grandfather was connected to slave trading, that has nothing to do with him, They don't even share a last name. Lord Bledisloe himself had no controversies but definitely had the power and influence to achieve them. Also accusing him of being "super racist" really comes across poorly when he was central to british recognition of Maori in the eyes of the crown with support of the Maori king and protection of Waitangi.

(Bledisloe was a freemason too, make of that what you will - I do no make anything of it, a big "meh".) The 2 first days of Top 14 have seen 2 unusual calls against Montpellier, the 2022 champion, and on them cost them the game. As a matter of fact, WR has asked the ref to be more strict on some aspects of the game that have been been overlooked. When you see Foley's teammates screaming at him in the background to kick while he stands there away with the fairies getting his derp face on, it's really hard to be sympathetic. It was a ballsy call because it was the 79th minute on the 5m in a 36-34 game in reverse of the momentum toward which was probably going to be a steady line-out and touch kick for the win. But the call isn't surprising nor is it controversial. The ref cautioned 3 times, even stopped the damn clock, cautioned again about time and then blew the scrum. They took like 2 minutes to take that kick. It'll be interesting to see the different ways NH and SH teams adjust to the refereeing.

The thing about the final ref call is this: Foley was deliberately trying to "cheat" the AB's out of their legitimate last chance to swing the game. He knew what he was doing, just as everyone else on the pitch did. And mostly he'd get away with it. But it cannot be a bad thing that a ref won't stand for it. Just as it wouldn't be a bad thing if refs started blowing up skew scrum feeds. Fairness demands that all the laws be observed, but tradition has seen some laws constantly overlooked. As much as I feel for the Aussies after their great game, I 100% agree with that balsy Frenchman on this.

The two penalties before the time wasting call were text book examples of the laws being broken and the ref correctly calling them in a pressure situation. Initially I thought the referee and interfered with the game with that call, although I wasn't baying for his head. After rewatching it several times, I believe he made the right call. At the end of the day, you have to play by the rules, sorry- laws, and laws say you have to take the penalty quickly to resume play. The ref gave him time. Stopped the clock even, warned him to resume play when he put time back on, and he made the right call when he didn't immediately resume play. That IS the kind of refereeing we need to see. He knew that it would change the complexion of the game, but he knew it was the right decision to make that call, and he trusted his instinct,

The stupid part about the delay of game issue was that the Australians had the throw to the lineout. Kick it out, and saunter to the line out - win the throw and kick it out when clock has past 80 mins = australian win.
@tafatapaleao4588
@tafatapaleao4588 2 жыл бұрын
You can NEVER ignore the fact that even then ... the All Blacks COULDVE won the lineout and scored a try, which is unlikely, but that outcome is always there. They werent guaranteed their win even if they kicked it out, but it was a better chance to concede the ball 40 metres out than 5 metres out lol Silly Foley

I was definitely mad at this call at the time, and was definitely really upset- but I seem to remember in the first half, Mathieu Raynal sent 2 of the wallabies out of the game, (why?) - and then an All Black threw a wallaby over parallel, and all we got was a penalty kick

How good is world rugby right now though. Going into WC year with France as slight favourites, yet knowing they will fall short. There are probably about 5 or 6 teams that all have a legitimate chance at winning the cup on their day. Bring it on!

I am surprised that no one mentions all the time through this game that the Wallabies were dragging their feet, which the ref clearly remembered. On top of that, he stopped the clock to get in Foley’s business about time wasting and gave him clear instruction to kick the ball immediately when time came on. Foley didn’t, and the ref had enough. I don’t personally like the outcome, but the ref did what he thought he had to do, within the Laws. The penalty makes sense, no matter how unsatisfying.

Copped a water bottle for making a brave call in the face of relentless time wasting and refusal to abide by the referee's instructions? And did you throw a water bottle at Swain for his disgusting assault on the head and knee of an opponent? And did you throw a water bottle at the ref for the gratuitous missed forward pass (9:48) that led to a try?

Foleys second try assist would have been so much better if the pass wasn’t a metre forward. And yes, Caleb Clarke can be brilliant for moments, then make absurd decisions in the same move. Strange they have persisted with him, players normally get axed pretty quickly when they make such bad decisions.

agree with most of that and to be fair n.z often rises for these games because for some reason they made a big deal about the Bledisloe awhile ago, when before that it was fairly big, but my thing was winning the tri nations and now the TRC but it seems winning the Bledisloe has become the most important thing after the RWC 3rd is winning the TRC. But the ref made the right call. A GOOD JUDGE does not Base HIS DECISIONS On written down 'law' because he knows that no written law can apply to all the complex multiplicity of circumstances that may arise and so he bases his decisions on 'JUSTICE' , now the ref gave a pass to swine he could have easily given a red card to him for deliberate foul play (the replay shows him clearly targeting his leg) at the end of the game he gave the penalty to aussie, a brain fart from Foley and the ref rightly pulled him up , NZ STILL HAD TO SCORE THE TRY and they did.

Brilliant as always squidge, I only disagree on Brodie assist at the end, Valentini turned and gifted the easy hands. He should've forced the long overhead pass from a forward rather than allow an easy overlap. Valentini allows that easy short pass a forward would always prefer, so I wouldn't credit the attack in that situation more bad defensive drift.

STAN offers an overhead camera, referees mic only version of the game. In it you hear Mathieu Raynal trying to hurry up the ambling Wobblies time and time again. Eventually he stamped his foot down and the ABs found something in the tank and won the game. Mathieu should be given the WRC final as a reward for dealing decisively with this the blight (deliberate slow play) creeping into the game. Hello England! Hello Springboks! Whomever was involved in that in the Wallabies should be un-dis-de-contracted and encouraged to play League or some other obscure offshoot.

I think that this was not the time to make that statement by Raynal, there were multiple kicks at posts where Muanga took about 2min to kick, that wasn't penalized. We all want the game sped up, but that wasn't the moment to make the biggest call. That being said, Foley's offload for the try was also forward, so probably fair in the end.
@gs8494

Was the scrum to the AB's for Foley's time wasting really a controversial decision? It's rare definitely but it's not wrong like you said, I read in another video comment section that it happened to Connacht over 10 or was it 20 years ago? I think the Raynal decision would've been more controversial had he not stopped the clock after his initial restart to specifically tell Foley to stop wasting time and play immediately, and lets not forget that Foley blatantly tried to tell Raynal that the time was off after he blew the whistle as he went to kick the ball which to be fair would've annoyed the ref even more. I have to be honest I find the fact that a international number 10 can't read a ref by minute 77 or follow simple and clear instructions hilarious. Foley blew it, end of story. I feel for Nick White tbh, planting that pen was worthy of taking the Bledisloe cup back from the Kiwi's then for him to watch Foley to chug some idiot juice and do what he did must've felt like he'd literally been gutted. Also no take on the Swain "tackle" on Tupaea? English by the way I don't have a dog in this fight.
