Sometimes it’s tricky to know how to feel about a tie. This Saturday, after an enormously impressive first 40 by the All Blacks, England clicked in a way not seen for three years- So what did we learn about the two teams, and how should they each feel after a bizarre 25-25 day?

Nobody need have worried, there were some crusaders players who are at conspiracy theory level for their unfounded favour lavished upon them by NZ rugby journalists. Richie starting, David at all, Codie being on the field for more than 40 minutes. It's a bias but, then again New Zealand has to signal their virtues and favour the heartbroken Christchurch people.

They have been doing this forever, it means they can take the ball basically on the gain line instead of back 10. Surprised squidge didn’t stop this as he made a previous video about how they attack off the line out. I guess flankers normally wouldn’t attack the ball because it would usually go straight to tuilagi and if they miss the ball then it leave him acres to run into

Just wanna say as an England fan in the latest O2 Next Level video we saw the class of the All Blacks as people, not just as players. I don't know why but it really moves me to see Beauden Barrett having a good chat with Farrell and his kids after seeing them as rivals since JWC. Same with Whitelock and getting the NZ boys to present him with a bottle of NZs finest wine. Regardless of what people think of Farrell to see the respect, the class, and the generosity of All Blacks players post-game is really moving and is a big part of this sport after the whistle has blown

I think Ireland and France are definitely peaking at the wrong time. It's less of an issue for France, they're the host nation, playing insanely well with great defence and have a wealth of young talent (even if Ntamack and Dupont have been average by their standards, they still beat Aus and RSA playing very poorly). Ireland are similar but they didn't look that convincing in any of their 3 matches, I suspect they could drop 1 or 2 games during the 6 Nations. I actually think South Africa are in a good place and will always be good in a World Cup in France, particularly if they sort out their fly-half and find someone who can actually slot goals. Providing Etzebeth, Marx and co play like freaks, their physicality will be very threatening.

@Nathan I’m English but you make very good point. I understand that the discussion on England achieving an incredible draw, it does not really cover just how good the All Blacks played for the majority of the game . I thought it was the best Al Black performance this year. I thought it was a real statement that the All Blacks are on the right track for the RWC It was so great as an English fan to see players like Retallick and Whitelock at Twickenham. Ardie Savea was magnificent as was Papalii. I liked Moo’unga too what a player. Ultimately England we were lucky to get the draw, however that is sport. I wish England could play the All Blacks more often. The last 5 games between the 2sides have all been close. It’s a fantastic fixture we all look forward to.

I absolutely love Suidge's micro-analysis of parts of the game that I easily miss whilst watching live, really makes you realise how much thinking goes on on a rugby pitch. Also I think the decision to take the draw by Smith was absolutely correct and remember thinking about exactly what Squidge said about how England were set after that re-start was re-gathered. I was very confused about the vocal outpouring to the contrary over social media. Realistically given the positiong on the field and where the England players are when Smith get's the ball, the only outcome other than Smith kicking it out is a NZ turnover or more likely penalty and 3 points at the death.

Great analysis and I think you rightly point out that England aren’t out of contention for the World Cup. However, this review felt very one sided. I understand your glowing review of England’s structure but I do think it’s important for you to have stressed a bit more the fact that it was against 14 men after the 70th minute at which point there’s naturally a lot more space to exploit and tires bodies. Don’t think that’s enough to say that “it clearly works” and is a World Cup winner. Will be interesting to see what happens in the 6 nations!

England are underated as potential world cup winners for the simple reason that they have by far the easiest schedule out of all the real favorites. Poule D will be a lot of fun and Argentina and Japan will be very dangerous but losing to both of them would be a major shock. Then there is a quarter final against a team from a historically weak group. Wales and Australia are looking poor and nobody would be surprised if Georgia or Fiji qualify for the knockout stage. After that follows a semi final against a team that comes from the side of the schedule that has all the other "big" teams and will have had much tougher games. At that point in the competition attrition is a big factor. So England can easily reach the final without needing to play exceptional rugby or actually be one of the two best teams in the competition. Furthermore: no Eddy Jones team has ever underperformed at a World Cup, so the will be well prepared.

There were 2 or 3 overlaps against NZ in their 22 that Squidge doesn't mention. Both Farrell and Smith calling for the ball with their hands in the air and not getting it. So the attack would have worked more, but the forwards kept having one carry too many (at least). This is an Eddie Jones learning for me. He is so gainline obsessed that the players aren't thinking, +1 metre is considered a victory regardless of scenario. I also think the strategy in the 22, until the last 10 minutes, was very predictable. Attempt a maul, move nowhere, 5 phases of forwards bash until they give away a pen or NZ get a turnover...which annoyed English forwards who then gave away a pen. They just need to trust the backs and the system more and move the ball once they have go forward. They showed they can do it in the last 10. If they did it more often in the 22, it could have been a 10 point + victory against NZ.

Eddie Jones has clearly decided on the Smith Farrell axis so I think it’s time that fans buy into it rightly or wrongly

Just a note that this very “lateral-pass” attack is known as the hallmark of Randwick rugby club, where Eddie played for 10 years (and I played as a junior until a back injury ended my inevitable wallaby career). Particularly in the 80s and 90s (Eddie played 81-91) when so many Wallabies stars were from Randwick, and the Wallabies adopted this fast flat attack. Talking David Campese, the Ella brothers, Matt Giteau, Phil Kearns, Sekope Kepu, David Knox, George Gregan, Simon Poidevin, Morgan Turinui, Drew Mitchell, and Andrew Kellaway and Kurtley Beale today (not to mention my grandpa Col Windon who held the Aussie try-scoring record for 30 years from 1952). And of course international coaches Ewen McKenzie and Michael Cheika. I’m sure there’s a lot of other influences and thoughts since then in Eddie’s approach, but it’s a very very interesting piece of Australian rugby history, and quite befuddling as an Aussie seeing England perform it so well 😂

A laws question. With the lineout, I thought the defence aren't allowed to advance until the ball has passed the 15mtr line? Or do our players in the lineout allow them to advance by crossing the 15mtr? Dalton Papalii starts his run just after the ball is thrown.

In the comments , the line out was over since the ball went past 15m on an over throw
@MegaTomtom212
@MegaTomtom212 Жыл бұрын
@@JeffCampbell2016 yes it did eventually go over the 15mtr line. But the defence was moving just as it left the hookers hand because he could see it was going to be over thrown. So technically offside as the ball had not passed 15mtr.

Loved this video. I enjoyed that game so much, I enjoyed the draw too I thought it was fitting. Im a Kiwi but I'm a closet England fan, especilly after the performance they put on us in 2019. Eddie Jones deserves more credit than he gets, has so many haters from the English fanbase it grinds my gears, he's a great coach. The All Blacks I thought were awesome though, they held up to a lot of pressure all night, got worn out in the end.

When I was watching Saturday I knew there was something special that wasn't 100% for the first 65 from England, even though the lads we're just saying "we are so ****"! And this video has proved me right. When this clicks finally, with Smith singing on full voice, is going to be a dangerous England team again!

@@Trajan2401 The benchmark that coaches and analysists use for 15 v 14 is 7 points in the ten minutes. Getting 19 suggest England did something very good or the AB's were shit at coping with it, possibly a bit of both. Does put the Roses' 63 minute effort in some sort of context. If the AB's had coped like the Roses, they would have conceded 3 points. If the Roses had played like the AB's they would have conceded 95.

Playing the "reaching some form again" Springboks on Saturday. Cannot wait. Any country who thinks a Springbok loss makes them an easy team to beat, should think again. At their best, no one in the world can beat them.

Why do u think it took so long for the attack shape to become present in the game? Was it fitness or due to the yellow card? As potentially due to the all blacks being down to 14 might take away the focus from thr attacking shape to avoid opponents or the media overanalysing it and just putting the scores down to more space on the field?
