Today we hop aboard Last Train Home. Contrary to the game's marketing, it's not a Realtime Strategy game (RTS) - it's something MUCH BETTER. Our review after 50+ hours of gameplay deep-dives into this ambitious management and morality survival game that takes place in a rarely seen historical setting.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Jagged Alliance 2 & W40K Dawn of War 2 are some of my favorite games. To me, r-t with pause feels like the perfect middle ground.

Aliens: Dark Descent also heavily relies on a pause/slow down key. And it's a brilliant game. One of the best in my 30+ years of gaming (unlike my kids I know that there's more to life than Fortnite). Thanks for the detailed review! I'm very much familiar with the history of the region. Keen to try it out.

Fun fact. Although soundtrack might sound a bit ordinary for foreginers, it is actually filled with references on czech (or czechoslovak) national music and old folk songs. For example, the main monumental game theme (most often one used in trailers) uses slightly altered main theme from one of our most famous orchestral piece from that time period: Vltava (The Moldau). So for us, the soundtrack have this awesome next level of finding famous and familiar tunes through whole game.

Thanks for the kind words! We're also confused as to how little coverage this game gets. It's pretty cool and unique, and deserves better. We're small but mighty right now, but due to our format we decided it's more important to just stick to making good videos rather than chasing views or massaging the algorithm. Hopefully more gracious viewers like you will find our little channel in the future! 😀😜

I found y'all because you're one of the few to review this game. I'm in Chapter 4, and this game is definitely one of my favorites already. Minor QOL issues aside, it's solid. One of the few games I'm invested in the story, my little MVP people, and I want to see just how hard it's going to get. PIES AND CIGARETTES FOR EVERYONE!!!!

Really enjoyed the vid fellas and the Insane in the Membrane joke sealed the deal as you guys being my favorite dorks. I feel like RTwP is a half measure a lot of the time. I'd prefer things to be entirely one way or the other. If the game is going that route, I really expect some type of action queuing or delegation of duties. Both of those things are in DA:O, is it a surprise to find out how many of my opinions were formed by that game lol. On the flip side, just before the community meltdown and DLC fiasco, I tried playing TW:WH III with no pause at all after years of playing that series with very active pausing and found it really did liven things up. I'm now of the opinion that pause is a handicap, at least in that game. I don't mean that in the *gamer* way, that it's a bad thing that diminishes your worthiness, but that it's a useful way to catch up and learn the game. I'll probably have more thoughts I'll share in the discord, it's a good conversation.

Oh goddamnit, why do I keep stumbling across amazing looking games I absolutely, positively do not have either the time or the money for? Christ, I saw a few reviews for this on Steam where children were yelling the usual irritating capitalism v. communism idiocy at each other and all I wanted to know was what this game even was in the first place and now I'm actually considering buying it! This is a great review - also, damn you!

Another fantastic review of a promising-looking title! "(Red Army AI) relying more on numbers than competence..." So, pretty realistic then? 😂 I find the frenetic gameplay of RTS exhausting and unrewarding, so I tend to prefer turn-based tactics games. The RTwP games (or pause-and-go, etc.) are a decent compromise and often play a bit faster. My favourite game for RTwP was the (much maligned) Jagged Alliance Back in Action, the pause in action, camera controls, and PoV made the combat in that game a lot of fun (although they really didn't put much effort into the canon/lore) Off to purchase Last Train Home now.

@@2HeadedHeroIf you try JABIA again you really need the "Realistic Rebalancing" mod, it makes the game playable. The lore and characterizations were disappointing, the strategic layer is a bit annoying, but the tactical battles are interesting.

This was an enjoyable review. Better than I could do, but if you're open to feedback... - Please give spoiler warnings, or structure the video so that it doesn't reveal too much about the story to prospective players. - RollinKunz sounds (only a bit) like he is reading from the script. - The parts where you finish each other's sentences does not sound organic or cool. (Maybe it can, but IMO it doesn't yet) - Really liked the humour and editing. Also good sound quality. Definitely interested in what you guys cook up in the future!

Bear this in mind when reading my review: i have a big book full of information about armoured trains including the Czeck legion and the Orlick featured here my review after watching the first 30 ish minutes of play: clearly the moral compass AND history of this game was made by the director of Enemy at the Gates and Red Dawn just Czeck. by which i mean Morality is holywood level black and white and history is non existent. Morality: in the first 30 minutes you get reminded at least 3 times that the REDS ARE PURE EVIL. History: You immediately lose the Orlick (Eagle) Rail Cruiser EG the train car with the big cannons which the Check Legion kept for 20 years before handing it over to the Japanese in Japanese Occupied Mancuria in 1930. let me repeat that: in the first 20 minutes of this game, the Orlick is destroyed, completely ignoring history and 20,000 miles/20 years of the Orlick NOT being destroyed IRL Game: "the reds are evil for stealing supplies from this village and killing everybody" Also game: "well it's a good thing they where EVIL so we feel no guilt about stealing all the supplies from this village! very conveniently the villagers where all killed by the evil red people and we don't have to worry about the morality of leaving them to starve!" Game: look that red Russian general cannot be trusted! we must maintain neutrality tho! 5 seconds later: that evil red Russian general rams a train into yours and executed a survivor removing any reason to believe any encounter can or even should be resolved peacefully for anything other then purely pragmatic EG Non Moral reasons.

You might want to review that book of yours to see how to write Orlik, Czech or Manchuria. However yeah it's not historically accurate, the actual start of their problems was in Chelyabinsk not in Moscow, and by the hands of Trotskiy not Morozov (however Morozov IS a name with special meaning), but frankly it's still not streamlined enough for a lot of people to understand why they had to travel to the east to return to a country that was on the west (I read some comments... ugh). Orlik for sure is not historically accurate and it's kinda meh, they could've added it later as a buyable option, but it doesn't break the immersion that much. They got golden treasure/Kolchak right from what I heard, and I was told that Baikal is there too somehow. So what, you can then complain that you don't command tens of thousands people, which was the actual force of Czechoslovak Legion, or that your captain Langer is not Radola Gajda, for example.
