Sohyang's the best. Every performance is a master class of vocal skill, breath control, ease of transitions, she's just amazing. She can belt notes most people can't even hit, or if they can they usually have to flip into head voice to do it. There hasn't been a female singer of her caliber since the big 3 came along in the 80s and 90s (Whitney, Celine, & Mariah in case it wasn't obvious). But what makes her the best has nothing to do with her insane vocal arsenal, it's her ability to connect with people. Nobody draws the tears like Sohyang does, it's crazy. She's a healer. Buddy in the red shirt's clueless and doesn't know what he's missing out on by being stubbornly closed minded, making up things that don't even make sense to justify his decision to not like her, which he clearly made before she even sang her first note.

Guys, I have to thank you for this reaction. It was entertaining as hell. But more importantly, you guys showed how the general public would typically react when listening to A Whitney Houston cover. I have seen time and again those, same as the gentleman in red, who couldn't help but compare the rendition to Whitney Houston's. The respect they share for Whitney Houston is so ingrained in their mind that nothing will ever be good enough, regardless of the singer's intention, effort or achievement with her performance. Meanwhile, there are those, like the gentleman in blue, who responded to the performance on its own merit to his own taste and experience. I appreciate the open mind and fair treatment of each performance. This is such a contrast that basically demonstrates human behavior I didn't expect coming into this reaction video. It's rather refreshing to get both views in one place and viewers can judge for themselves. Sohyang is a well recognized vocalist by people in the musical industry. Regardless of your personal taste, her vocal skills and ability to deliver a song are really beyond reproach. I hold no ill intention to you all and believe the wine may be the true culprit here :-) Nevertheless, music is not a competition and let's enjoy the good music where we can get them. For the record, I am a Sohayng fan and I put her in the same vocal pantheon where Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion would reside. Even though I like Christina, I am still looking for her to make her case to make the ascension. Cheers.

Her life is so inspirational.. she is devout christian singer who really more like singing to God more than fame/money which make us not much seen her on media/tv in korea even the world stage though she is worldclass singer vocalist ever!! Oh my god this was painful to sit through. FIrst of all, she is totally not singing in the second tenor range. She spends most of the song in 4th or 5th octave. That's a bit beyond a normal tenor range. Now regarding the key, she actually starts in A flat and after the modulation she ends up in D flat. That's two and a half steps up. Whitney starts out half a step lower in G and ends at B, which is only two whole steps. Regarding the top range, Sohyang mix-belts up to A flat 5, while in the recording Whitney only goes up to F sharp 5. Note that when Whitney sang this song live she usually took it a half step or whole step down to make it easier for her. Basically, Sohyang starts at a higher key and ends at a higher key. I think you need to get a keyboard, listen closely, and compare. Of course Whitney is forever a queen (and an inspiration to Sohyang as well) and nobody could sing it like her. Sohyang is just doing her own take on the song, making it her own. Also one of the reasons you might have thought she was singing lower is because her high notes are effortless. You don't see tension in her neck, jaw, or face. She makes it look easy. That's ok though. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just wanted to get the fact straight.

Welcome to So Hyang's world. (two syllables not three. The H is soft and connected to the second syllable) You guys have an echo, both in your clip and when you speak. She actually started a key higher than Whitney because So Hyang is a lyric soprano, so naturally has a higher voice than Whitney. So Hyang isn't trying to copy Whitney's version, she is making it her own version. The point of a cover isn't to copy and make it exactly the same octave and inflexion but to make it suit your own voice. As a Korean fan of Sohyang, I am upset about the red shirt guy's disrespectful behaviour. I would like to tell him that she is one of the highly regarded singer in Korea (a mean of course, she is recognised by everyone across the universe now). I don't mind that you have an opinion and that you find the original version better. However, you need to learn to have some respect. Other people who are educated properly (unlike someone) knows how to respect a person on the stage - that is called etiquette. You should also learn when to say things and when to not say things. Clearly, you thought that you wouldn't get any criticisms about what you said about the video, but now you do. You undermined her singing and her reputation, and I think that is why you talked bad about her. If you knew that you would get so many hate comments like this, you wouldn't have said such a thing. But you did, because you looked down on her and I feel very upset about that. I want to tell you one last thing. You pretend that you know so many things about music like a professional. But you know what? you don't. Music is about colour and diversity. Even though different people sing the same song, it will be different due to their style and voice colour. I have to say this, too, about how So Hyang came to work with David Foster. Whitney Houston's former manager saw her sing this version of "I Have Nothing" on KZbin and showed it to Oprah Winfrey. Oprah got in contact with David Foster and he got in contact with So Hyang, following which they did 8 concerts together in Japan. None of these people, and David Foster is a GIANT in the music industry, think So Hyang is inferior to Whitney Houston. Even Whitney's former agent was ultra excited about So Hyang. Honestly, I have heard a few people saying that Sohyang's pitch is too high and these are friends of mine. And most of them have hearing problems ie. hearing aids or old age. So, we should not blame them for what their brain processes. I thought it was rather rude od the guy in red to make fun of Sohyang at the very end by blocking out her singing. To me, it is ok if he doesn't like the singing as that is his opinion but being rude just isn't nice.

Both reactors don't realize that David Foster (Whitney's producer and the co-writer/arranger of this song) and Whitney's former manager both said Sohyang is amazing. Foster even went out of his way to arrange to have her sing in his concerts in Asia. People in the music business for decades know talent when they see it. Mr. Red Shirt knows diddly squat about singing. He cites TV shows as his way of validating his opinion: just because he can name a judge on The Voice, he claims he knows what singing talent is. WTF? That kind of bizarre reasoning means many audience members qualify to be talent scouts for major record labels! If he made the decisions for a label, it'll go bust. Red is tone deaf. Sohyang started at a key higher than Whitney's studio track and even higher than Whitney live, and closes out much higher, but Red thinks it's lower. And Red is just a poser by tossing around technical terms to try to cover up his ignorance, yet doesn't know what those terms really mean. He says tenor when the high notes are for soprano. Red the Dolt tries to block the playback by making noises as Sohyang finishes the song in epic fashion. This is childish behavior. Red is a great example of the Dunning-Kruger Effect. He deserves a big down vote for all his BS.
