How Does A Bagpipe Work? A bagpipe is a means of performing the saxophonist trick of circular breathing (inhaling through the nose while blowing air out the mouth into the instrument to produce a continuous sound) without having to spend years learning how to make one diaphragm both exhale and inhale simultaneously. You blow air into the bag and squeeze the bag to push its air through the pipes. The bag acts like an external lung. It allows you to make continuous sound as long as you can keep the bag inflated. Three of the pipes are just drones, producing a continuous tone in a preset register, while the fourth is fed through a tube with tone holes like a recorder flute so that the piper may play tunes by manipulating the holes. The one thing you can never play on a bagpipe, is quietly. The instrument is designed as a battlefield signalling device capable of being heard for miles, for letting the troops know what action their commander wants them to perform. (Attack, retreat, charge, converge, etc.) Rather like a bugle, but somewhat more versatile.

Fun fact: while shooting scenes in the butcher shop, Nancy Travis was distracted by Mike Myers's antics and accidentally cut off the tip of her middle finger on her left hand when chopping vegetables with a kitchen knife. Nancy started shouting "Cut! Cut! Cut!" which she meant literally, although the crew initially thought she was referring to the term for stopping the shooting of a scene. A local doctor sewed it back on. A little later, when Harriet takes the wedding rings out of the talcum powder, you can see a bandage on the middle finger of her left hand. This was the same finger that she had cut during the butcher shop scene while being distracted due to her laughing. Continuity!

I think the movie does a great job of combining a coherent story interspersed with a collection of unrelated side skits that somehow lend to the pacing instead of disrupting it. Like, Wayne’s World is fun, but it’s virtually all individual skits with only the thinnest semblance of a story at all.
