Fable is an action role-playing video game, the first in the Fable series. It was developed for the Xbox, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X platforms by Big Blue Box Studios, a satellite developer of Lionhead Studios, and was published by Microsoft Studios. The game shipped for the Xbox in September 2004. An extended version of the game, Fable: The Lost Chapters, was released for the Xbox and Windows in September 2005. A port of the game for Mac OS X, created by Robosoft Technologies and published by Feral Interactive, was released in March 2008 after a delay of more than two years due to licensing issues.
Originally developed under the name Project Ego, Fable's development involved more than 150 people. The game's music was composed by Russell Shaw, with the opening title theme written by Danny Elfman. The game's release was widely anticipated, due in part to Lionhead co-founder Peter Molyneux's enthusiastic hype of the game. The game was originally in development for the Dreamcast, but shifted to the Xbox after the Dreamcast was discontinued.
Fable received generally positive reviews from critics for the quality of its gameplay and execution, though the failure to include many promised features was noted. Fable was the top-selling game of September 2004 and sold more than two million units by 2006. The game was followed by two sequels, Fable II in 2008, Fable III in 2010 and a reboot in development by Playground Games. Fable Anniversary, a high-definition remake of the game that includes The Lost Chapters, was released for the Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows in February 2014.[2]
Fable is a role-playing video game where players control their character from a third-person perspective. The main character, known as The Hero of Oakvale, can interact with people and objects as well as battle foes. The goal of Fable is to complete missions called quests that advance the game's plot, but Fable also features optional quests and allows players to pursue actions not directly tied to story completion.[3]
Most quests are acquired at a central location, known as the Heroes' Guild; required quests are marked with a gold symbol and advance the game's story, while optional quests are coloured silver and can be completed in any order. Some quests allow players to pick sides and aid either evil characters, such as bandits, or good characters, such as traders and guardsmen. Players can also boast after accepting a quest, wagering some of the quest's reward gold in exchange for a larger return if the player accomplishes their bet, such as sustaining no damage or undertaking the quest naked. Gold, which can be used to buy weapons and items, and renown, which affects the way townspeople react to the Hero. Heroes also earn trophies of their victories, which can be displayed to large groups of townspeople to earn more renown.
In addition to fighting with melee weapons (such as swords and maces) and ranged weapons (longbows and crossbows), Heroes can learn and use spells to empower their abilities, ward off damage, or harm foes. As players complete quests or defeat enemies, they gain general experience as well as experience based on whether they used melee attacks, ranged weapons, or magic; these bestow Strength, Skill, and Will experience, respectively. Experience can be spent at a platform in the Heroes' Guild to level up attributes.[4] General experience can be used to modify all groups of attributes. Strength experience can only be used to modify three attributes: Physique, Health, and Toughness. The same applies to Skill which can only modify Speed, Accuracy, and Guile. Will can be used to upgrade player's total magic power or to learn and upgrade spells which are broken into three groups, Attack Spells, Surround Spells, and Physical Spells.

I honestly don’t know why, but I find Fable 2 to be one of the best RPG ever. It’s so warm and hearthful, with a simple but honest story about someone from zero to hero. I used to love seeing my family, and would do my best to find the best house for them. Really love this game.

Visually, this game aged horribly. It was glitching out like crazy. I played it on Gamepass for the first time today. I was questioning why people cherish this game. I only got 38 minutes in, so maybe it gets better down the line.

If I was an Xbox gamer instead of a PlayStation gamer, maybe I could have played both Fable 1 and 2 along with Sudeki, Blinx the Time Sweeper, Pyschonauts 2, Avowed, first 3 Gears of War Games and the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. Fable looks like an interesting game to play since I’m a huge RPG gamer.

This game was legendary. The semi-open world is an amazing feature. I love the idea of freedom open world give. But at the same time when you walk hours just to get into a generic cave to get a generic item you get bored easily. Here you have freedom with limitations. But it's way better if you ask me. you don't wander for hours without getting to the point, but at the same time you can do whatever you want. The spells were engaging and fun as well as the combat system. The dialogues and plot were excellent. Only thing it lacks is a bigger variety of weapons if you ask me and the fact that you necessarily have to be evil to use stealth (if i remember well).

Imo this is the best one hands down. The sequels focused to much on the social aspects of the game. Fable two should have been a longer version of this game with more armor, more heroes, a bigger world, and the ability to recruit heroes

This is the remaster not the original. Anyway this game was amazing for the time. Still is great but it didn't age well when you actually play it these days. The soundtrack is iconic AF.

Ooo you absolutely missed the opportunity to beat the sht out of guards as a kid and get a warning finger and that "bad boyo, bad boyo" talk😂😂😂 just comedy gold really, the whole game is...but i liked the original game more, remaster tries to take it self more seriously and it ruins the fun and fairytale vibe, even the normal eyes are lame, the almost anime looking big eyes was part of the whole thing, also when you block( as a kid) you do creepy glitched wierd face in remaster😂😂 it shocked me rly

It's amazing how unique it can be each time even when you try to do a similar play style. You should check out some of the cut content videos it's amazing what they didn't restore even with Lost chapters and the lost opportunity that anniversary was to restore a ton of content

When you go back to the town after you become a hero you can go to the graveyard and read some of the tombstones and they'll change depending on what you do at the beginning. That cheating husband and the wife are there and her tombstone was something like "At least she found out"

I grew up playing a lot of Fable on the original Xbox and I absolutely adore the game, but... The remaster just looks, awful, honestly. I don't get how they made it look so weird. Even with the rose tinted glasses the original just looks so much better.

When I first played the game I heard you could get married and so I did the beards baldy quest. I didn’t realize there was a barber in town so I would go to the forest and wait for a trader to spawn so I could get a different hair cut.. it took me hours to finally do and then I found out that I had wasted all that time just to get made fun of

Man, I remember when I first played this game in like, 2005-06. I'd saved up to buy an xbox second hand and got a few games with the deal, fable included. At first the idiot child that I was thought that this was some turn-based anime-esqe kind of game and therefore that it was going to be a shit game. (All I knew about anime then was characters with spiky hair and big goofy eyes. Simpler times.) But man, was I wrong! After about an hour I was completely hooked and Fable turned out to be one of my childhood favorites! I actually still got the old xbox somewhere with the old saves on it. Haven't had the heart to part with it.
